Subject: BS: Job offers and other adds on Mudcat From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 13 Nov 13 - 06:37 PM Do interesting advs. appear on your Mudcat Café? Today one from Statoil, the Norwegian giant oil company appeared with a thread I clicked on. It was a list of openings at the professional level, from drilling to administration and accounts. It seems that they are beefing up their staff in Houston and Austin, Texas, 29 jobs open there. They have interests in the Gulf of Mexico. I retired over 40 years ago from the oil business, so I think Google, or whoever places the adds, is a little out of date. Most of what I get have to do with companies I have ordered goods from (L L Bean, Amazon, etc.). |

Subject: RE: BS: Job offers and other adds on Mudcat From: Elmore Date: 13 Nov 13 - 08:10 PM Adds? What do you mean by adds? |
Subject: RE: BS: Job offers and other adds on Mudcat From: Joe Offer Date: 13 Nov 13 - 08:23 PM I get ads that seem to be related to Websites I've visited lately. Somebody used my computer to make a reservation at Hampton Inn, so I have Hampton Inn ads on the Forum Menu, and Amazon MP3 ads on this page (I was using Amazon Cloud Player). -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: Job offers and other adds on Mudcat From: GUEST Date: 13 Nov 13 - 08:58 PM Joe offer is posting adds? |
Subject: RE: BS: Job offers and other adds on Mudcat From: Joe Offer Date: 13 Nov 13 - 09:31 PM I wondered that myself... |
Subject: RE: BS: Job offers and other adds on Mudcat From: Rapparee Date: 13 Nov 13 - 09:48 PM I thought that "Job" was a misspelling of "Joe" and this was about various Joe Offers. |
Subject: RE: BS: Job offers and other adds on Mudcat From: artbrooks Date: 13 Nov 13 - 09:51 PM There is, and can only ever be, ONE Joe Offer. |
Subject: RE: BS: Job offers and other adds on Mudcat From: Amos Date: 14 Nov 13 - 12:29 AM But the ads include a lot of Offers meant to be even more enticing than Joe. |
Subject: RE: BS: Job offers and other adds on Mudcat From: Bert Date: 14 Nov 13 - 01:17 AM Job offers, any relation to Joe Offer? |
Subject: RE: BS: Job offers and other adds on Mudcat From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 14 Nov 13 - 12:06 PM Why block the adds (ads)- Don't you want to know the five foods you never should eat? Why are bananas bad for you? Don't you enjoy looking at the pretty girls who want to marry you? Don't you want to buy a dashboard camera? Don't you want to escape the winter blues? Flight packages----- Don't you want to shop now? Amazon.com - SHOP MORE Don't you want to reserve at Holiday Inn Express, Tapachula, Mexico?Don't you want to know that ENMAX "is on for you"? (electric power provider) Where are the good-pay jobs? Relocate to Houston, Texas? The only thing our washing machines can't do is fold clothes.(Sears) Now, did you know that? More interesting than many posts (limp jokes about Joe Offers). |
Subject: RE: BS: Job offers and other adds on Mudcat From: JohnInKansas Date: 14 Nov 13 - 12:09 PM The ads that appear here are mostly from Google, but "tracking cookies" that you pick up when you use Google or when you visit the majority of "commercial" sites may be used to "target" which ads a given person sees. There is some evidence that the ads you see may be based on "what your friends" have looked at, if you're into social networking (Farcebook et. al.) As noted in another recent thread, when you tell us what ads you see here, we can infer "what you've been doing" and if that doesn't fit we can guess what kinds of "weird friends" you have. (Most of us are too polite to spread rumors about our conclusions, but there might be some nominal risk.) Ads for "professional employment" might come just from you having a subscription to a magazine related to a particular industry, such as oil .... Lots of "old timers" continue such contacts well after retirement, and everyone's subscriber list is for sale somewhere. About the only ads I get that aren't related to recent searches are from people wanting to sell me "final expense insurance" to make sure I can pay for getting "planted." ... (Makes me wonder if my doctor has been leaking my medical records.(?)) John |
Subject: RE: BS: Job offers and other ads on Mudcat From: GUEST,highlandman at work Date: 15 Nov 13 - 11:32 AM The Interwebs lost my post... here it comes again. Q, your post above reminded me of the "Billboard Song" we used to sing at summer camp. And here it is, right here in the DT! Cheers -Glenn |
Subject: RE: BS: Job offers and other ads on Mudcat From: Becca72 Date: 15 Nov 13 - 12:34 PM The add on the main page for me right now is asking if I have bladder sling problems...I can assure you I have never researched that on this or any computer, nor do I have a bladder sling |
Subject: RE: BS: Job offers and other ads on Mudcat From: ragdall Date: 15 Nov 13 - 06:15 PM Becca, They are hoping that at some time in the future you might suspect that you have and will remember their product. Maybe, unknown to you, a friend of a friend has the problem? rags |
Subject: RE: BS: Job offers and other ads on Mudcat From: Q (Frank Staplin) Date: 15 Nov 13 - 07:14 PM Never having heard of a bladder sling, I Googled. It seems there are a host of complications, and a class action lawsuit. Also ads for lawyers. Now let's see if I get inundated with legal offers. |
