It has to be said that Mr Conolly produces some of the best parodies in the business and I'd like to hear him come out with his own parody of Fiddler's Green when he visits my club next year HaverFolk on June 18.
That's as long as the mafia doesn't track him down for royalties on a certain Italian song he has wickedly parodied to take the mickey out of Signor Berlusconi.

As far as I know, the legalities are that you are not allowed to PUBLISH a parody of a copyright work unless you have the permission of the author or copyright-holder. I personally think this is a bit tight-arsed (unless somebody's making money out of it and I don't get any), and I have derived much amusement from parodies of some of my songs which I have come across over the years. The mighty Les Barker's version of "Punch and Judy Man" springs to mind -

"Mrs Capstick, Mrs Capstick, where has your son Tony gone?
"The Irish Sea is six-foot-three, and Tony's only four-foot-one. . "

I have to confess that I am partial to a piss-take myself (let him who is without sin cast the first writ. . ), so I won't be suing Herga Morris any time soon. . .

I think you canarody the words but the tume remains copyright? Bit that would only apply if you recorded or printed it?

I believe parody is normally considered to be "fair use" but not sure of the legalities and financial sides of it.

Does this mean that John Conolly who wrote Fiddlers Green should be receiving royalties for yje use of his song? Just wondered how that works, when somebody changes the lyrics of the song but uses the same tune.

Well, theoretically it was collected from Robot Nimb, an old shepherd whom Herga Morris encountered in Chippenham in about 1975, but some people have since noticed that this was an anagram of Bob (as in Hawkes), Tim (as in Edwards) and Ron (as in the late Ron Barnett). The song was entitled "Untippled".

Only a guess, mind, but I think it'll have been this one Bells have turned green. If it's the same bloke {name and side are right) Byron was a good man, one to be remembered.

This is the first verse and chorus of a parody. I remember Byron Daniels of Blackheath Morris singing parts of this in the early 70's, and always thought he had made it up. ( his last line to the chorus was' and I'll see you someday when my bells have turned green')....does anyone have further info?
