I knew immediately what it would be about...having just done 63.819% of MY annual blow....and I have to drag most of them on a plastic tarp from the back yard thru a maze to get them to the curb....

Some years I've had to load and drag a tarp just because the pile builds up too much for the blower. This time the wind had done approx. half the job for me. Occasionally I have gotten really lucky, and had the wind do most of the job.

At our previous house, we had a hige oak tree overhanging our back garden. Not only did we get mounds of leaves but before that we also got mounds of acorns.

Blow job took a long time...but the Mrs managed it.

I mow em. Good for the lawn. Saves plastic.

This is the absolute truth. I shit you not. Some years ago, I visited my uncle way the jeepers out the Fox Creek Road. On one stretch about 1 km long there is only one house. Woods on both sides of the stretch. Yup. Leaves bagged and piled for pickup. I SOOO wished for a camera.

While blow is an often used term, many folks now use the suck function. It works well for small loads. But, keep your oraface clean, empty your sack frequently and ensure your batteries are well charged.

Only got one, a fine piece of ash. It's too young to provide the need for blow jobs.

gnu, just too much to leave on the lawn. I tried that, and the rotting mess just about destroyed the lawn.

Our next door neighbor did take them down to the trees at the end of the street this time. I was blowing all day, he was loading a wagon all day.

I hire out my winter blow jobs at $750, tax in, for the season. It's a double blow job and I get as many blow jobs as I need. As soon as there are four inches, the blow jobs start. The little red tractor "follows" the City ploughs so I can usually get in/out of my driveway within a reasonable amount of time after the plough goes by. I have the cell number if I need an emergecy blow job. Of course, I have my own snowblower so I can blow it myself if I need to and, of course, I have to finish up the job in any case because the big equipment can't access tight areas. Got me a Honda with a hydrostatic tranny so I can take it as slow as I want... which is getting slower and slower as I age. It blows 65 tonnes/hr and that is one big load! Pic of my blower.

I figure $750 is a good price. I wasn't gettin blown until a while back when my back was still good. Now, I can just settle back and relax and let someone else do it. I mean, with my arthritis, I just can't blow anything this big.

froggy... ya gotta mow em a few times as they jump to their deaths. Works a charm. I have a lovely vid of the yellow leaves of my backyard maple jumping to their deaths on a still and frosty morn. I just wish I could find it. As the sun comes up after a killer frost and there's nare a strip a wind, one floats gently down... then another... then more... then... you get the idea. It's like a great symphony that builds to a crescendo.

I prefer the autumn blow job to a cold winter, "below the mercury" blow job. If you are not directly (aka voyeuristically) involved, I suspect who does it and the time of year matters less?

I don't believe in blowing leaves. They break down and fertilize the soil. Can't see filling the land fills with plastic bags.

I awakened to a carpet of white, a wonderland of s***, which reminded me that it was getting close to the time for my lawnmower to go into hibernation. My blower is awakened and awaiting its fate.

"...Can't see filling the land fills with plastic bags."

Depends on where you live. Here, the county collects the leaves from curbside with giant vacuums and turns them into mulch .. which is then available for free next Spring for those who want it.
They won't even look at plastic bags...

Leafblowers are horrible polluters, both for the two-stroke exhaust and the dust and dirt they swirl into the air. Not to mention the awful noise. There are much better ways to deal with leaves, several of which have been mentioned.

We in the fair land of Oz, where deciduous trees are but a minor part of the landscape, miss out on these seasonal joys! We have to take our blows when and where we can get them. Our neighbour, for instance, likes to do his blowing when he mows his grass.......which he does at least once a week, in summer.

If you have space, don't burn 'em. I fill about 60 plastic sacks each autumn, mainly oak & sycamore. After a year in piereced sacks they go into a bin which produces around nine wheelbarrows full of beautiful leaf mould after a further 12 months which help keep moisture in my very light soil, especially for runner beans and zucchini.

A Michigan State University study concluded that mowing the leaves on the lawn was a good thing. See here. Interesting.

I always end up mowing many of them, as I don't try to get every last leaf to the curb in the Fall. I really can't allow ALL of them to remain on the lawn, or I'd never find the grass in Spring. My street is full of trees, and I have Maple(4), Oak(2), Black Gum, a huge Poplar, and a very large Sycamore which dumps VERY large leaves at the last minute. There's always a good selection for the first mowing in Spring.

In my locale, many residential folks use rechargable battery vacuum-blower machines to concentrate the leaves - the two cycle ones ar mainly used by commercial gardning companies Many urban areas compost them and some do it at home (depending on the volume) Wher I live, plastic collector bags are recycled into other plastic products, and never end up in land fills. Some folks also use the huge compostable paper bags.

To compost all the leaves, I would either have to have a huge composting bin, or have a great big pile of bags in the yard as an eyesore all year. Then I would be lucky if critters didn't rip the bags to pieces.

I'm using an electric blower and a long, long cord, not an engine.

On the other hand, you could all ship the leaves to me. I can use all of them. Pre-mown/shredded is best. If anyone would like to ship me bales of pine needles, that would make our strawberries and tomatoes very happy.
