This thread inspires a couple of thoughts:

* Many French Canadian fiddle tunes have an "added" or "missing" beat; I initially found this very disconcerting after growing up dancing to contras tunes with a very square 32-beat A part and 32-beat B part. But after listening to more French-Canadian tunes, I find the unexpected rhythm to be a large part of their charm.

* I learned to dance zwiefachers from an old Folkcraft 78 record, which had only two tunes (one easier than the other, and conversely). More than a dozen zweifachers can be found in Peter Barnes' splendid collection "A Little Couple-Dancemusik" (1992). The book is available from CDSS at cdss.org, and is chock full of wonderful tunes.

Hamish Henderson's song "The Freedom Come-All-Ye" is based on a 3/4 pipe march. But he adapted it by making the last bar of each line 4/4.

The Shetland fiddle tune "Doon da Rooth" is a basically a jig (a variant of the Scottish jig "Drown Drouth") but has a weird bit that makes some people notate it in 21/8.

Poverty Knock sounds like adding extra triplets of "poverty poverty knock" would be a mimic of the loom sound. How interesting.

A type of crooked tune is a zwiefacher, a dance from southern Germany characterized by alternating 3/4 and 2/4 rhythms. The dance alternates between two-step and waltz (three-step) dance patterns.

Some people perform "Poverty Knock" with a missing beat - always feel it's quite effective.

We are looking for tunes that have extra measures or notes in a measure as a hook for the song. Clinch Mountain Backstep and Cotton Eyed Joe are two that come to mind. Also we believe the Cape Briton dance songs might have the same trick employed to catch and entertain. Do you have any in mind? Thank you!
