Subject: Folk Hall of Fame From: Les in Chorlton Date: 24 Nov 13 - 06:46 AM From the BBC 2 website: "This year's awards will see the addition of a new element - the Radio 2 Folk Awards Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame will recognise the special contribution of an individual to the world of folk music; someone whose impact and influence has had a lasting impression. The first entrant to be inducted into the Hall of Fame is Cecil Sharp - widely regarded as being a key figure in having helped lay the foundations for the modern folk revival in the early 20th century." So, who else would we put in the Folk Hall of Fame? Ok, I open with Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger Best wishes |

Subject: RE: Folk Hall of Fame From: MGM·Lion Date: 25 Nov 13 - 12:04 PM Is the Hall of Fame confined to British entrants, which are all that we seem to have had suggested thus far? If not, then Pete Seeger, Burl Ives, Josh White, John & Alan Lomax, just for starters, must surely figure. ~M~ |
Subject: RE: Folk Hall of Fame From: MGM·Lion Date: 25 Nov 13 - 12:10 PM And what are the criteria, the forms of contribution made, which may be considered. What about Gerry Sharp of Topic Records? Bill Leader? Fred Woods who founded Folk Review? The Beeb's own Charles Parker, who commissioned the Radio Ballads? Early folk club founders like John Hasted and Russell Quaye in London, Tom Gilfellon, Ali Anderson, Johnny Handle, Colin Ross on Tyneside, Harry Boardman in Manchester? "Enablers" like Eric Winter & Ian A Anderson?.... |

Subject: RE: Folk Hall of Fame From: GUEST,Phil E Date: 26 Nov 13 - 08:25 AM Seeing the name Young Buchan got me thinking... Surely the Folk Hall of Fame should have room for Anachie Gordon Polly Vaughan Billy Henry Peggy Gordon (no relation) George Collins William Taylor (deceased) Young Tambling Young Hunting Young Waters Sweet William (and Lady Marget) Lord Bateman Lord Maxwell Lord Marlborough Lord Carter and of course Sir Patrick Spens They may be aristocrats, they may be enchanted, they may even be fictional, but give them their due - without them we'd have nothing to sing about. |
Subject: RE: Folk Hall of Fame From: Les in Chorlton Date: 26 Nov 13 - 08:28 AM Good point Ms/Mr GUEST, I feel sure the BBC will have rules for theirs. They will almost certainly keep quiet about them and hence much unhappiness will be generated, I launched this to see how people here on Mudcat, clearly a good cross section of well balanced people with a deep and wide experience of all that is folk, to see whom we feel have done, and in some cases continue to do, good things to them old songs, tunes and customs. Best wishes |

Subject: RE: Folk Hall of Fame From: MGM·Lion Date: 26 Nov 13 - 12:28 PM "Great idea Phil" .,,. Disagree. Merely facetious attempt to sabotage reasonably promising serious thread -- even if OP does purport to like the silly idea.
