Who went to the folk club at R.A.F. Bruggen, and where are you now? Are you still playing/singing?

Ralph Wilson.

I went there as a guest artiste in April 1974 as part of a tour of the Forces Folk Federation, and had a grand time there and all the other clubs in what wa known as the 'Clutch Group'. I met lots of good people on this and subsequent tours, but alas my notebooks of the time have vanished in the wake of three house moves since then. I recently had a letter from Mary-John, who handled bookings for the tour. And Ralph Wilson has just given me another pleasant reminder. My memories of those days are among the highlights of what will next year become a 50 year career.Roy Harris

Just got this from Ralph Wilson . I was the organiser of the Borderers at Bruggen from 1973 -77. Many a fine folk singer passed through , the McCalmans , the Late Hamish Imlach , Also now deceased Doug Porter and Graham Cooper . I was fortunate to meet up with them again once back in Blighty. I met up with Roy Harris again in Wootton Bassett , now Royal W.B.This was in maybe '78 at the Old Nick folk club ,Dark and damp but with such atmosphere . Hi Roy , if you are reading this . I still have your signed album Champions of Folly and am about to play it again right now. Martin Carthy was on that and he was the guest and Honorary Graduate (Doctor of Music) at my Grand daughters Graduation from U.C.L.A.N. Preston about four years ago. He sang and played , what a surprise for myself and my daughter who just remembered him from that album . Funny old world !! I would love to have an idea of where you perform and when . Thanks Ralph will e mail you back.

Mac

I used to go to the Borderers when I was back in Bruggen from HMS Conway, on account of my Dad running it (John Heayes,I think he was a Flying Officer at the time) it was great. Does anyone remember the torture room - sort of opposite the bar - it had a chair a record player and a Seekers album. Dad used to say if anyone did a bad set that's where they'd go (but they hadn't needed it yet). Came across this website while looking for Doug Porter stuff - particulartly "I had a dog whose name was Green" anyone know if it was recorded?, other than on my Dad's reel-to-reel which is no longer around.

I arrived in Bruggen in November 84, went to the Borderers on the first opportunity, and found myself voted in as chairman, as I was also a "singer", that meant that I had to open the proceeding each folk night. I didn't see that in the terms of reference. But we had many great nights over the next 4 years.

Bob Sharp

I was at the Borderer's Folk club from 75-78 and remember it with great fondness. I use to sign there and did a bit of compering. I remember the great Doug Porter and have a recording from the club on tape of him it was a fine night. I am still singing and one of my most requested songs is Geronimo's Cadillac which of course I learned from the singing of Doug. I was also involved in the recording of the White Album which was an LP of all the regulars singing.

I was just sent a photo by someone of me playing at The Beggarman concert in Bruggen or Wildenrath in 1968 I think it was.. a blast from the past.
I was singer guitar/mandoline/banjo player in a folk group. We were stationed at Bruggen between 1967-1969 and played there very regularly ...
Stopped playing 10 years ago after a horse pulled my finger tendons apart while long-lining .. sniff sniff ..

I Have very fond memories as a child in the very early 80's of cleaning up the club after a folk night. My Parents, Christine and John ran the Borderers Folk club for a few years and made many good friends. I Have recordings of some of the Alcohol fuelled singing and general merrymaking.
