Janie, one doesn't have to sign into the traditionalmusic.co.uk site. It has a great deal of material; I use it often.

The above site also has a version with chords in C if anyone is interested.

I don't usually bother with links to youtube, I didn't with Reeves, because googling youtube and putting the name of the song in the blank will bring up not only Reeves but other versions to which one may listen.

Here's a youtube link to the Jimmy Reeves version - don't have to sign up as to the site Q listed.

Am pleased to find my gut feeling was right.

Oor Wattie wrote a great deal but the verses quoted were just not his style.

Not the good Sir. Walter Scott is a rather common name.

This Walter Scott, 1796-1861, was an evangelist, Baptist persuasion, who contributed to "Christian Songs and Hymns," 1839, the first Restoration Movement hymnal to match words and music. (American Christian Missionary Society, "The Christian Hymn-book,", a later publisher).

See "Hymnal Writers, Compilers and Publishers: Their Illinois Connection."

There was another evangelist with the same name, about the same time period.

Who gave Sir W. Scott?
A gut feeling says it does not seem to be in his style.

ACROSS THE BRIDGE 2
As sung by Jim Reeves

(D)I had lived a live of sin in this world we're living in
I had (A)done forbidden things I shouldn't (D)do
I met a beggar along the way, and I asked him where to stay
Where I'd (A) find real happiness and love that's (D) true.

Just follow the footsteps of the King and you'll hear the voices
They'll be (A) singing out the glory of the (A) Lamb
The river of Jordan will be near, the sound of trumpets you will hear
You'll be (A)hold the sweetest voice ever known to (D) man.

(D)Many in this worldly throng traveling in the paths of wrong
Never (A) stop to pray and find the Savior (D) true
There's a grand and glorious place where we'll meet Him face to face
In (A) happy land beyond the starry (D) blue.

Chorus-
(D)Across the bridge, there's no more sorrow
Across the bridge, there's no more (A) pain
The Son will (A) shine across the (G) river
And you'll ne(D)ver be un(A)happy a(D)gain.

Jim Reeves can be heard singing this country gospel song on youtube.

ACROSS THE BRIDGE 1
Walter Scott? or Trad.

I have lived a life of sin, In this world I'm living in,
I have done forbidden things I shouldn't do.
I asked a beggar along the way if he could tell me where to stay
Where I could find real happiness and love, that's true.

Chorus-
He said across the bridge
There's no more sorrow
Across the bridge
There's no more pain
The sun will shine across the river
And you'll never be unhappy again.

Follow the footsteps of the King
Till you hear their voices ring
They'll be singing out the glory of the Lamb
The river of Jordan is deep and wide
I'm longing to see the other side
Where I'll behold the most precious place
Ever known to man.
