Subject: Oy, do I have a migraine!
From: Little Neophyte

Being that a beloved Mudcatter has has been suffering from a bad migraine, I thought helpful migraine suggestions were in order.

I've never had a migraine but as a nutritionist I do know we recommend to eliminate coffee and decaf (and other sources of caffeine). Once someone is off caffeine, coffee can be used as a treatment. Drink one or two cups of strong coffee at the first sign of an attack, then go lie down in a dark room.

Try eliminating other dietary triggers such as chocolate, red wine (sometimes white wine, too), strong-flavored cheeses, fermented foods (like soy sauce and miso), sardines, anchovies, and pickled herring.
Any other suggestions from Migraine Mudcatters?

I have a particular migraine reaction to Nutra Sweet. Whatever is in that 'moiders' me! However, I can tolerate Sweet 'n Low with no problem at all. So, that means that I drink the no-caffeine, no cola, no diet soft drinks.

Imitrex. It's a prescription that works. Home remedies don't do much compared to an effective drug like Imitrex. I know, I've had migraines off and on all my life since I was 14, and I've tried everything. ~alice

'Tis, Little Neo -- I just couldn't remember what the specific name was, so I used the brand names of the artificial sweeteners instead. Thanks a bunch, Áine

P.S. I think stress (and possibly hormones) has a lot to do with the onset of many of my migraines. I don't suffer from as many of them now since I quit my job as a legal secretary. Now, I just stay home with my three youngest and homeschool them -- no stress there, ha ha!!

Another note about sodas, with caffeine, sugar or not, the phosphorous accelerates bone loss and demineralisation, according to Susan Weed's book, Menopausal Years, the Wise Woman Way, thus making you susceptible to osteoporosis later on. It is second only to salt in food additives and can also be found in white flour products, esp. enriched; preserved meats (bacon, etc.); breakfast cereals; canned fruit; frozen fires and instant mashed potatoes; processed cheeses; instant soups and puddings.

Her advice to be sure you get enough phosphorous to help your calcium levels, without getting excessive amounts it to:

Drink water or herbal infusions instead of soda pop
Eat only whole grain breads, noodles, crackers, cookies
Replace meat with beans and fish for most meals
Rely on fresh foods rather than preserved, processed ones.

I used to suffer from terrible sick headaches about once a month. (female related) I have been told that some women, with water retintion, also have water retention on the brain which causes all the pressure, hence the migrane. I've been told that a mild diuretic helps in that situation. I asked the doctor about it, and he didn't want me to use them (don't know why). Anyway, I know longer suffer from the headaches after surgery (prolapsed uterus came out).

When I had the headaches, one thing that helped me was....TOMATOE SOUP!! Why? I haven't a clue. I always felt better after having eaten tomatoe soup. That and a nap.

Dandelion root tincture is really good for water retention, plus it is an all around great tonic, safe to use on a consistent basis. I used to make my own.

Of course, I am not making any medical claims, nor am I repsonsible for how the above info may used, etc.

Aine, I was wondering how stress affects people who are vulnerable to migraines. If personal issues are up, or if it is a confrontational time for someone (consciously or subconsciously), will this trigger a migraine. Would it be helpful for a migraine sensitive person to be aware of this and observe the pattern of personal issues and migraine onset? Is it possible to control a migraine's intensity by feeling the emotions surrounding it? Just a thought

MamaKat, phosphorus is measured in a calcium:phosphorus ratio. The highest sources of phosphorus are found in animal products (beef, chicken, fish, eggs, and dairy products) or coke. Eat too much of these foods and it may throw off your calcium:phosphorus balance leaving you more susceptable to bone loss.
Margo, I believe your physician is wise. Diuretics are powerful stuff. You not only end up releasing lots of water but also essential electolytes such as potassium. If you do take a diuretic I suggest you studing the benefits of bananas discussed in an earlier thread 'performance anxiety'

Sometimes you need to go and have your eyes checked. A friend of mine had terrible headaches for years, and one day he went and had an eye check, and it turned out that as he got older he had become nearsighted in one eye and far sighted in the other, and he was squinting all the time. Sounds stupid, I know, but these kinds of things get overlooked. yours, Peter T.

I've been on both Elavil and Prozac for prevention of migraines. Both had nasty side effects. I now take the herb feverfew - one 380-mg capsule per day - for prevention. For me, it works at least as well as the other drugs and has had no side effects.

One caution - if you decide to try it, make sure you buy a brand that guarantees potency. Look for parthenolide in a concentration of at least .7 mg per capsule, or as my brand says, 2% (of 380 mg capsule). I made the mistake of switching brands and having the headaches return after a couple of weeks. When I got the "good stuff" it took a while to start working.

It probably won't work for everybody, but at between 8 and 13 US cents per day and no side effects, may be worth a try. It will take anywhere from a couple of weeks to a couple of months for results.

Little Neo, is it just me, or is everything that's good to eat or drink bad for migraines? And I crave those things when I'm in the "migraine zone." (Mainly tomato products and chocolate.)

Curiously enough, drinking a lot of water can help remedy water retention. The water also helps your kidneys eliminate toxins from your body. Don't stop eating because you're drinking so much water though, or you can mess up your electrolyte levels.

I get very cold when I get a migraine. A hot bath helps.

The way you react to stress can contribute to a migraine. Also - and this is a biggie - disruption of the normal sleep pattern. (Not getting enough sleep, or getting too much.)

I have suffered from migraneous headaches for 35 years and have observed a change in their pattern and type as I have got older. Alcohol has always been a trigger (life's a bitch!) so I don't drink much. If I take painkillers at the right time, and depending on the type of alcoholic drink, it doesn't always develop into a full-blown attack. I also used to find that they came on after a stressful situation. My mother always said that you only have them when you have "time" to have them: i.e. after stress. Nowadays they are as likely to come on during the stress. I suffer no visual disturbances, but I at least usually lose my appetite and get nausea with the worst and get sensitive to odours sometimes. I use migril tablets if I feel one coming on, coupled with painkillers for the worst, and although these are not always effective, the only thing my GP has come up with lately is a LARGE dose of Ibuprofen at the onset (the new thinking, apparently - hit it hard at the start). It is no use taking a preventative treatment for migraine when you don't suffer from "proper" migraines! The best treatment I ever used was in S.Africa when I used a painkiller that also contained meprobamate (a tranquiliser or anti-depressant). This is not available in the UK but it worked well at the time: I know especially these days that with me tension does play quite a part, as do hormones, and as I reach that "time of life" more so. I also have started suffering with neck problems, partly due to muscle tension/inflammation from time to time, and also when at its worst, crepitus in the neck and shoulder. It seems that the headaches feed into the neck muscle and vice-versa. Sometimes I have the pain in my temple and also at the base of my skull. If I touch the base of my skull the muscle is very tender. I find a heat pack sometimes works for a while, but I find these days that I can expect to suffer for at least 2 days at a time if it is an intense attack. Here's where confession time happens: I do drink too much coffee. A year or two ago I did cut right down for a few weeks but it didn't make a lot of difference. I now take Feverfew and St John's Wort daily as well as Starflower Oil. One of my favourite things is to bathe my head and neck with lavender water and I also burn lavender oil sometimes in my bedroom. I have also tried mint tea and camomile from time to time. I keep telling myself that I need to take fewer pills and use more natural remedies, but when I go through a time like the last 9 days when I am beset with hormones, tension, a 24 hour gastric virus and the inevitable 2 and 3 day headaches either end of it, it's either pills or a swift bullet! Trouble is, it nearly always reaches the point when the pills aren't working, and then you know it's gonna be a long day! Anyway, I feel quite a bit better today and I am crossing my fingers that I will have a week or two's respite (as long as I am not tempted to have a beer!)

I would highly recommend Susan Weed's book to any and all of the women who have posted on here. She discusses all treatments in a concise and easy to understand way. She rates them, according to her own critertia of most natural to least natural with her preference for the former.

Question: do most migraines come with visual effects, too? Can you have those without the headache?

Jeri, I guess the stimulant type foods seem the yummiest. Wine, chocolate and coffee. People become very attatched to these foods and they are extremely difficult to cut out when we are dependent on them. I for one find them all sacred.

As for craving taboo foods in the Migraine Zone, I think it is the demon inside us who yearns for what we should not have.

Drinking lots of water does help improve bodily water retention. If we do not drink enough water, our bodies go into survival mode, retaining what we have and rationing excretions. How do you know you are drinking enough water? Your urine should be a light colour something like the colour of straw.

My sister used to have the visual effects without the headache. She couldn't ride her moped with them. I didn't have those until recently. My monthly migraines wore off in my late twenties, but I am still susceptible at time. At that time, I found that I was having them on Saturdays, when I lay in, missed breakfast, and was having less caffeine than during the week - every breaktime. I cut down at school, reinstituted breakfast and good coffee, which helped then. I experimented with the forbidden foods, too. I found that, if it wasn't the time, I could eat, eg half a jar of Marmite with no problem, but if it was, the urge for a chocolate binge might be a deliberate triggering of a migraine waiting to happen. I don't have the cyclic setup any more, and can abuse mealtimes, chocolate etc with impunity. As I did have water retention, leading to fainting on one occasion, and don't now, I wouldn't be surprised if there is a connection. Since broad beans and yoghurts were on one list, and I hated them, I've wondered if my body was telling me something there. On that principal I now avoid the beans, aubergines and peppers, which my mouth also rejects. I do think noticing what your body tells you at around the time of an attack may be helpful.

I am also wondering why there are so many migraine reports here all at once. Given that we are a very large sample, there should be some happening all the time. Is this effect real, or an artefact of one person mentioning it, and then others responding?

Penny

I'd wondered about the sudden onslaught, too, Penny.

When I get too fatigue I have spots in my eyesight, but docs never found anything wrong, so we guess it is just stress, no headache, though.

My Prescription for Nutritional Healing book says the minute we begin to feel a twinge of pain, to drink 2-3 glasses of water, to alleviate any stress on muscles etc. due to dehydration.

I know of some practioners of Qui Gong, monks, who first thing in the morning, face the sunrise and drink a gallon of water before anything else, along with prayer and meditation.

I average 5 gallons per week, so just under a gallon per day, but it is the only thing I drink in real life.:-)

You can have any symptoms of a migraine with or without any other symptoms. So yes, you can have visual disturbances without having a headache. I had a friend who's sole symptom of migraine was going completely blind in one eye. (Please note the visual disturbances could be caused by something else.) I've had the coldness without any other symptom.

This is just an observation - I've noticed that if I get a migraine, other people who suffer from them are very apt to have them as well. Weather (barometric changes, I think) can sometimes trigger mine. That could explain some of the migraine "outbreaks."

Penny S, I can eat anything I want when I'm not in the "zone." I'm not sure the foods have anything to do with my headaches, because I don't have any way of telling which ones I would have gotten anyway.

i've been getting migraines for a few years now and am only just starting to pay close attention to what triggers them for me. jeri, low pressure systems definitely have an impact. and mouldy, i agree with your mother about having the time to get sick -- sundays are a prime time for me! other than msg, dried figs, and red wine, i'm less certain what foods trigger them (and yes, i am addicted to caffeine). being dehydrated definitely contributes to the problem for me, so i try to drink plenty of water. but i would also recommend being aware of any air quality issues in the rooms or buildings you spend time in. i was getting them with nightmarish frequency at my last job and only after they happened to replace the apparently ancient, leaky, malfunctioning oil burner did the frequency recede. cheers, margaret

A guy suffered terrible headaches all his life. His Doctor tried every known remedy in the literature except one, which he refused to relate to the patient. Finally, the headaches were so bad the the guy insisted on knowing what the final treatment was - and the Doctor said :CASTRATION! The guy was so miserable he said, "Go ahead with the operation." It worked ! No more headaches!

However, about a month later he became depressed about his life and what he had done, so he went back to the Doctor. Doctor said,"Do what I do when I'm feeling bad - go get a new suit of clothes." So the guy goes to the best clothing store in town, an old clerk came up to him and said, "Can I help you?" The guy said, "I want a the best suit you have, and all the undergarments, shirts, ties, shoes, everything." The old clerk said, "I have a reputation in this town for knowing exact sizes just by looking, so you'll need a 44 long coat, pants 38 waist, 34 inseam, shoes 11 B, shirt 17 neck 36 sleeve, jockey short size 40." The guy said, "You are truly amazing!! you have everything right except the shorts! I wear a 34 shorts." The old clerk said, "No you need a 40. You wear anything smaller they'll put pressure on your testicles and give you a terrible headache!"

I suffered from migraines for about 10 years and they were debilitating. Once I was taken off birth control pills the migraines stopped and now I suffer almost as often with allergy headaches. But re the migraines ... anything with tyramine will trigger them, i.e, chocolate, red and rose wines or any wines with bisulphites, bananas, aged cheeses, processed meats. Low barometric pressure was deadly for me. Caffiene actually helped because it expands the blood vessels. Unfortunately for me, at the time I was so beset with them, there were any really good medications. I tried Sansert, which unbeknownst to me is a derivative of LSD and I was the one in 10,000 who had a nasty reaction. I took Inderal, which is for high blood pressure, for years but it didn't help either. One good thing is that sometimes one grows out of them, especially is they are brought on by hormones. A dark room was helpful and icepacks across my forehead definitely helped ease the pain. I feel fortunate not to have them anymore and feel for anyone who does ... moonchild

When I get a chance, I've got a lot of questions to ask about some of the things mentioned here......like, uh...

Kat, do I have to drop trou and bend over to get an "herbal infusion?" If so, I am of course interested, but do I need to pig out on pickled herring first? I mean if I eat all those whole grains and beans instead and am wanting to be an "infusionee" than I would see great danger in being the "infusionist." And Kat dear, your "visual effects" ain't got squat to do with a migraine!

And 'Phyte, be sure to suggest your latest post to Rick...or maybe to Heather instead. Would it still be helpful even though it was administered by proxy? And if he has to go it alone, do you have any nutritional ideas for muscle cramps in, oh, say, the arm maybe? (Mental images really going now huh?....Wait..maybe its one of Kat's "visual effects!")

Hawaii was amazing Rick. I saw real red hot lava running down a mountain. Rare sighting.
I played my banjo with a local junk shop owner who was into vintage ukuleles.
I ate lots of quava, mango, papaya, and coconut.
I found a banjo in the pawn shop. $1,200 for a Fender 5 string and it had Grampa Jones and Earl Scruggs signatures on it. Instead I bought a coconut cup bikini bra for $2.75

Yep, a good orgasm will fix a migraine..... but not very many people feel like trying when they have a migraine..... something to do with release of pressure.. and lots of great hormones/ endorphins whatever... coursing about.

If you grow feverfew, you can have it in sandwiches and salads.

I get the visual symptoms, which then go away,... once they go I have 45 minutes before the headache itself hits.... usually I take Ibuprofen, lavender oil on the temples and head for a dark room.... I have a homeopathic spray which you use under your tongue... it worked today at the visual disturbance stage......

but I suppose I could make a phone call and see if anyone wants a bonk... purely for medical research purposes, you understand... *grin*

Another migrane sufferer here also, but I have found since I've got older, I now usually only get get the visual affects and not the excruciating "will some one chop the top of my head off with a sharp axe...pleeease?" pain associated with it. As an aside, I have noted that alka seltzer (oh gawd, am I using a copyrighted name? sorry) is still fizzing one half hour after you vomit it up. I have been the usual dietary routes over the years, with the doctor, to see if my migranes are the result of food allergies, but mine do not seem to be associated with diet. The ones I have now seem to be associated with weather changes particularly in the spring and fall and when I was younger always associated with stress (or as mentioned previously when the stress was over). I had a doctor once, who, upon making a house call (unusual) and noting the state of my apartment and the fact that I was crying, suggested that if I just tidied up my place and did my laundry I would feel much better. I remember driving to my mother's that day with a laundry basket full of dirty laundry and having to stop at various points on the highway to hang my head out the door. Never went back to that doctor. I now take two tylenols with caffiene and codiene whenever I start to get visual distortions, as a precaution, because I hate pain.

If maturbating is that helpful why don't migrainers use it as a preventative measure? They should study migrainers who release themselves daily and see if the statistics are lower for migraine onset

Catspaw, sometimes I just don't get it. Pretty funny eh?

I think I would prefer an orgasm to feverfew in my sandwiches anyday.

Before this thread started wandering serious off-course (or is it off-colour?) I was going to share some accupressural cures for migraines Big Mick showed me last October. But now I'm not touching this thread with a six-inch pole!

Charlie, come on, talk! Your post reminded me of something I tried once. I get "trigger points." These trigger points are very tense, sore places on my head. I've tried massaging Tiger Balm in at those spots, and it's helped.

Is it possible to distinguish the difference between Brazillian and Indian Rosewood while your having an orgasm or a migrane?

Dear FAIR ONE. I know it is nasty work, but someone has to do it. I hereby volunteer to serve as "Bonkor" to your "Bonkee". This is purely for research purposes, and I promise not to enjoy meself (fingers crossed behind my back). I am doing this solely because I can't stand the thought of you suffering............please let me know when and where..........

I can recommend two books that have been of great help to me. Both of these deal with the manipulation of, and deep massage of Tsubo, which are the places on the body where acupuncture, moxa, massage therapies and Jin Shin Do practicioners manipulate. One is titled "Acupressure Way of Health: Jin Shin Do" by Iona Marsaa Teeguarden. The other is "Shiatzu" by Yukiko Irwin with James Wagenvoord. The former deals with the spiritual/philosophical aspects as well as the practical application. The latter takes much more of a "here are the symptoms,............massage here" type of approach. I can strongly recommend these methods. I have seen and experienced some pretty amazing demonstrations of them.

Now, back to trying to convince the FAIR ONE to letting me assist her in her hour of need.............Beat it, Lagerphone Boy, this is work for a sensitive man of the millenium...........LOL

Mick
