Subject: ADD: Once Unto the Shepherds
From: GUEST,leeneia

While ambling through My Documents, I came across the following lyrics in Word Pad. I have no idea where they came from or how they got there. Like a forgotten sock lying squashed behind the laundry hamper, there they were.

ONCE UNTO THE SHEPHERDS

1.Once unto the shepherds seated on the ground
came a heavenly vision, glory shone around
and the shepherds listened, heard the angels say,
"Christ is come to save you, Christ is born today."

2.Go ye to the manger lighted by a star
joyful is the message; spread the news afar.
Listen to the anthem that the angels sing.
"Christ is born among you, Christ the heavenly King."

Googling the words produces a 1904 reference to a Deseret hymnbook for children. I don't know what it means, but 'Deseret' is associated with the Mormon church in my experience.

Yesterday was a quiet morning, so I wrote a tune for it, which I will submit to Joe. It'll be in two keys, Bm and then Em. (the kalimba solo precedes the change in key.) It moves stepwise quite a bit, so I composed a simple drone accompaniment.

I'm sending the MIDI to Joe, and if all goes well it will appear here soon. give it a try this Christmas.

Nice MIDI, Leeneia.

I wonder if there's information available about the original song and tune.

If you google 'once unto the shepherds' you will find some books it's in. IIRC, they didn't have a tune or else they had one and I didn't like it. Either way, I saved the lyrics and forgot about them until now.

That reference to a Deseret book looked promising.

I looked at "Deseret Sunday School Songs," 1909, on line, and didn't find it.
