Subject: Lyr Add: MY BABY'S SO SWEET (Dave Van Ronk)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 25 Dec 13 - 12:35 PM

These lyrics copied from the original liner notes by Kenneth S. Goldstein found at Alexander Street Press [PDF] and tweaked a bit by me to reflect Van Ronk's diction.

MY BABY'S SO SWEET
As sung by Dave Van Ronk on "Dave Van Ronk Sings Ballads, Blues and a Spiritual" (Folkways FS 3818, 1959), which was reissued as "Black Mountain Blues" (Folkways FTS 31020)]

Hey, mama, hey, girl,
Well, don't you hear me callin' you?
So sweet, so sweet, my sugar's so sweet.

Well, I love my baby, down to her bone,
Yes, I hate to see my little sugar go home.
So sweet, so sweet, my sugar's so sweet.

If my baby she done gone home,
Well, I thought I was doin' her right, must 'a' been treatin' her wrong.
So sweet, so sweet, my sugar's so sweet.

If you see my baby, don't get so smart.
Well, I'll cut out your liver and I'll eat your heart.
So sweet, so sweet, my sugar's so sweet.

Yes, mama, yes, girl,
Well, don't you hear me callin' you?
So sweet, so sweet, my sugar's so sweet.

Yes, mama, yes, girl
Well, don't you hear me callin' you?
So sweet, so sweet, my sugar's so sweet.

[The liner notes say Van Ronk learned this from the singing of Blind Boy Fuller. However, Fuller's version was called "Little Woman, You're So Sweet" and Van Ronk changed a few words.

[Similar versions are sung by:
Danny Kalb and Friends on "Moving in Blue" (2012)
Lauren Sheehan on "The Light Still Burns" (2013)
Nick Drake on "Family Tree" (2007) and "Digital Box Set" (2010).]

MY LITTLE WOMAN, YOU'RE SO SWEET
As sung by Blind Boy Fuller on "Blind Boy Fuller: Complete Recorded Works in Chronological Order, Vol. 6, 1940" (Document Records DOCD-5096)

Ehh, mama, ehh, gal,
Don't you hear me callin' you?
You so sweet, so sweet; my baby's so sweet.

Said I love my baby, love her to her bone.
I hate to see my sweet sugar go home.
She's so sweet, so sweet; my little woman's so sweet.

See my baby comin', don't get so smart.
I'll cut your livers then I will plug your heart.
You're so sweet, so sweet; my little baby's so sweet. (Spoken: Call again, boy!)

Hey, mama, yeah, gal,
Don't you hear Blind Boy Fuller callin' you?
She's so sweet, yes, sweet; my little woman's so sweet. (Spoken: Play it now!)

Hey, mama, yeah, gal,
Don't you hear me callin' you?
She's so sweet, so sweet; my little woman's so sweet.

Woman I love, she done gone back home.
When I think I'm treatin' her right, I must be doin' wrong.
She's so sweet, so sweet; my little woman's so sweet.

I'll make a million trips, when I would rob a little bee,
But the woman I love is sweeter'n anything in this world to me.
She's so sweet, so sweet; my little woman's so sweet.

Hey, mama, yeah, gal,
Don't you hear Blind Boy Fuller callin' you?
You so sweet, yea, sweet; my little woman's so sweet.

As sung by Josh White on "Great Bluesmen in Britain" (2002)

I tol' you baby, time and again,
Honey, I was your enemy; I'd rather be your frien'.
You so sweet, so sweet; my li'l baby so sweet.

I love you, baby, love you to your bone.
I hate to see my sweet sugar go home.
You so sweet, so sweet; my li'l baby so sweet.

I love you, baby, love you to your bone.
I hate to see my li'l woman go home.
You so sweet, so sweet; my baby so sweet.

Look-a here, boy; don't get so smart.
I will cut your liver; you know I will plug your heart.
She's so sweet, so sweet; my li'l woman so sweet.

[* I heard this on Spotify. The recording seems to be taken from a radio broadcast, and the beginning of the song is cut off.]

I heard this on Spotify, but you can also hear it on YouTube:

SO SWEET, SO SWEET
As sung by Josh White on "Josh White, Vol. 1: 1929-33" (Document Records, DOCD-5194)

Oh, my doney's(?) sweetest thing in the world to me,
Sweeter than honey from that honey tree.
So sweet, mm, sweet baby, so sweet.

I don't know why I love that sweet woman so.
Got the sweet heart she had five years ago.
So sweet, so sweet, baby, so sweet.

Sometimes she makes me happy and I guess she makes me sad.
Would 'a' cost the sweetest thing I had.
So sweet, so sweet, baby, so sweet.

When you see my sweet sugar, don't you get so smart.
[I'll] cut your liver and plug your heart.
So sweet, so sweet, baby, so sweet.

Says I love her; Lord, I love her to my bone.
I hate to see my sweet sugar go back home.
Mm, so sweet, mmm, baby, so sweet.

... for their own.
Chapter forty-five: leave my sugar alone.
So sweet, mm, Lord, she's so sweet.

Make a million ... bee.
She's sweeter than any honey tree.
So sweet, so sweet, baby, so sweet.

Don't think I'm jealous; she's [the] sweetest girl I had.
Don't try to take her, 'cause it'll be too bad.
So sweet, so sweet, baby, so sweet.
