Blow through clamped lips, varying the lip tension to change the pitch. A bit like blowing a brass instrument eg trumpet.

This page for a recording by the Memphis Jug Band has a link which purports to be a tutorial on jug playing. Unfortunately it's a private video.

There's a Vimeo film of Dom Flemons talking about it, but you can't see his mouth and he doesn't say enough to describe how it works.

Anyone here know how to do it and willing to say?
