Just before Christmas, I received a message to say that Ralph Jordan had a fall and had broken his hip.
Today came a message from Gareth Kiddier which indicated that things had taken a turn very much for the worse.

A message from Sheena. Ralphie has been transferred to ICU and his organs appear to be failing. Please hold them both in your thoughts at this difficult time.

I am gutted. Saw the notices on Facebook, the first of them worrisome enough, the second truly devastating. Lovely blithe-spirited Ralphie, one of my first friends on the folk scene when I was a stranger newly arrived in London.

2014, this is NOT a good start. I expect you to treat beloved friends more kindly than 2013 did. You can just stop shadow-boxing with us RIGHT. NOW.

Ralphie always contributes posts to Mudcat in a most positive, friendly way; it was him who cleaned up and "de-scratched" the Phil Tanner "Gower Nightingale" recordings and presented Veteran Records with a brilliant, up-to-date reproduction which would have made Phil proud, worthy of a commemorative CD.

Gareth Kiddier has written the following on Ralphie's Facebook page. I have no words.

Ralph has been on life support for over 24 hours now. He is peaceful and being well cared for, but may be fading. Sheena remains with him at the hospital. She asks that, if you know of friends who might not see this, you let them know.

Very sorry to hear this. Ralphie turned up with his trusty duet a few years back at our old session at The Moorbrook in Preston. We talked for a while before it twigged we knew each other via Mudcat. An emotional moment - we even hugged! Top geezer.

This is very sad news. I was great friends with Ralph back in the 70s when we formed his first band 'Peartree', but over the years lost touch, despite him being Best Man at my wedding to Teresa in 1975. I just happened to google his name this evening after my sister mentioned him, and this is the news I found.

Very worrying, but not "sad" so far, and let's hope it won't be. Only a couple of years ago I was in intensive care and my people were told my organs were failing and there wasn't much chance.

Coming very late to this thread. Returned yesterday from NC.
I wish Ralph a complete recovery. I owe him much. He very patiently eased me through two recording sessions in 2005 when I was not in good shape, physically & mentally. Without his skill & incredibly relaxed attitude, those recordings would not have been useable. That he is now so threatened & in pain is most distressing to read. Get better, wholly & completely, dear man.

I'm sad to have to report that Ralphie, who was my very close friend, and musical partner for oh too short a time, passed away this morning peacefully at 3.50 am in hospital with his partner Sheena, and his sister by his bed. He had had a fall which his GP suspected had resulted in a fractured pelvis. This proved not to be the case, but while in hospital he was found to be suffering from dangerously low sodium levels ... and this was the reason for his slow decline, and it appears many of the other medical problems which he had had over the last couple of years. Once there is more news regarding funeral etc, I will pass them on.

RIP Ralphie ... so sad at this moment.

I don't know what to say about this. Ralph will be very much missed by very many people. As so many have remarked, he was a real artist as a musician. It was an honour to work with him. Much more importantly, he was a really nice, good hearted, bloke. In the end, that is what really matters.
Like everyone else, I feel very sad about this. For all that he always showed a sunny nature in public, Ralph was a sometimes troubled soul. At least now he can rest in peace.

Damn. I'd been checking every time I came online since I heard about it, and holding my breath every time I opened up the thread.

I had a look around Youtube to see if I could find a clip, and this was the only one I could. It's him doing a subtle tasteful and cheeky accompaniment. The sound and picture quality is a bit ropy, but I Iove it. Ralphie in action.

Ralph was an old friend from the days when I ran Catford Folk Club, and was resident at Dingles. We downed many a pint in the South London pubs. I have never heard anyone say a bad word about him.

I first met Ralph about 35 years ago when we used to book him and James Patterson at the Hoddesdon Club, when they were a duo (Silas) and later, when they joined with Mick Ryan and John Burge as Crows. Happy days. His talent will be greatly missed.

I first encountered Ralph on the BBC boards nearly 10 years ago, I was enquiring about the whole Celtic Music scenario, familiar to many, and after an email discussion with the late, much missed Diane Easby (another legend of the BBC boards) Ralphie phoned me up, and we had a long old chat about everything, which culminated in him sending me a CRD of the Crows!
We never met but kept up our sporadic communication via Facebook, he was an enthusiastic, genuine, warm, funny gent who gently corrected some of my knowledge and always gave freely of his time.
He will be missed.

McGrath of Harlow - thanks for putting the video up. You called it "subtle tasteful and cheeky accompaniment" - too true. During rehearsals it was even more cheeky! Sad to think that we will never perform that one together again ...in fact that song was the first one that he heard me singing, and that gave Ralphie the idea to turn my talk ,then in preparation, on the life of Lucy Broadwood into a show with accompaniment. It was a privilege and a joy to work with him.We were talking more than once in 2012/2013 about making a recording of the songs as a record of what we had done - sadly that will now never happen. There is another video of him accompanying me on guitar (sadly also not particularly great quality) on the song Nancy if you seek for it, and another of him playing in Housewives Choice band. Can't watch them at the moment, as I'm too blurry eyed.

Ralph stayed with us after a Wigan Ceilidh. A true gent. It was the night of a Linda McCartney tribute which he'd been asked to do for the BBC but he told us he thought it more important to drive north to Ince as his heart was more in that sort of thing. A sad loss to the folk community and the world in general.

Just to say that tributes were paid to Ralphie by Genevieve Tudor on her weekly radio programme for BBC Shropshire, and by Mike Harding on his podcast this week. Mike played "Hares on the Mountain" from Flat Earth, and Genevieve played Gavotte in G Minor (Bach), Yrsno (Mats Eden) and Moulin Rouge (Georges Auric) from Eloise on her programme. Both made spoken tributes as well.

I've found this while searching for information about the funeral; I don't normally contribute to Mudcat. I'd been friends with Ralph for 40 years or slightly more, through all the various bands and groups, and always thought him a kind and gentle person, as well as a superb musician. He leaves a big gap in our musical scene.

Only just heard this sad news. I've know him for years from the time involved with Stagfolk, as a member of Silas with James Patterson, with 'supergroup' Crows, as muso for Paddingtons, and Ed Rennie head-hunting him for Housewives Choice!

Above all, we'll miss the endless banter and flannel, the cheer he gave to all, and superb musicianship.

Pads were on tour with Champs on a Stroud Morris Ale in the early 1990s. We visited Westonbirt Arboretum where, on a blazing hot Saturday afternoon, Ralph was engaged in conversation with an elderly gentleman who was fascinated by his duet concertina.
As we boarded the coach on to our next stand, Ralph commented 'Blimey, I've just been talking to Laurie Lee!'

Of course, Ralph worked as a sound man for the BBC and was subliminally featured on Radio One's 'Steve Wright in the Afternoon' with Nigel Chippendale. I also forgot his association with Colin Thompson and Nigel in 'Eric' and was it the Otterby Band?

As for introducing us all to the delights of Filarfolket, Ralph's memory will always be treasured.

He was Andy Kershaw's main sound man, and one time Andy, having discovered Ralphie played concertina, persuaded him to the other side of the glass to play it on live radio. I think Ralph said it one of the most terrifying things he'd ever done. Not only playing live on radio, but nobody on the mixer so just hoping it was coming though OK!

He also introduced Fiona Talkington to Scandinavian music, which she has played incessantly on Late Junction ever since.

Just heard the news from Mike Harding on Radio 2, I worked with Ralph in the early 1970s and he introduced me to English Folk Music.
He helped moved all my worldly belongings from London to Matlock in the back of his Morris traveller & was my Best Man in 1974.
We lost touch but I will always remember him as a great mate

Treewind - I thought from what he'd told me that the playing on radio was actually on the Johnnie Walker show? Twice? And amongst the goodies played were Side Saddle, and Jour D'Ete ?

George - there was Groupa as well of course. Fiona Talkington isn't the only one amongst us who has developed the bug for Swedish music!! I took delivery of a CD of Swedish fiddle music only a week or so before Christmas - seven years ago I would probably never have given it house room. I wonder how many other people he spread the Swedish music infection to over the years?

But never forget the Hackney Martians as well ... :-)

What a loss. Remember Ralph at Halswey making a compilation for Nigel Chippendale's parents and lots in between until a couple of years ago at Stowmarket. A really nice guy and an inspiring player.

Re the Johnny Walker item , Anahata (assuming that to be you, of course) ... I seem to recall he went on a show and was interviewed about Lester Simpson and Mick Peat's radio programme cancellation in more recent times - but I have a feeling that may have been Dave Eyre's programme in Sheffield.

Re the funeral, Nigel, there has been no news as yet. If there is any, I have no doubt one or other of us will post something up.

I received the news of Ralph's death with great shock and sadness.It's really quite hard to take in.I will always treasure playing with him in Crows and just jamming with him in the early days in my flat.
I always think of him when playing the Capriol Suite and now it will always have a special significance.He was a great concertina player ,and a great guitarist ,cittern and bouzouki player, harmony singer and musical arranger. We last chatted at Dartmore festival.I watched him playing in the session and thought of times past.
Our thoughts are with Sheena and his family.

Quaker Funerals are based, like all other Quaker Meetings for Worship, on silent reflection and prayer. Quakers have learned that shared waiting in divine presence can bring many gifts. Among these are the comfort, which is found in the caring support of others and the beginnings of an understanding of how to move forward in difficulty or grief. A Quaker Meeting for Worship begins as soon as the first people sit down and settle into expectant silence. A member of Watford Meeting will welcome us and give a brief introduction.

After the introduction, the silence may be broken by anyone who feels moved to stand and speak - sharing their reflections of Ralph, memories, etc. This is not a place for eulogising but for things that will help us to remember Ralph and support us all in moving forward without him, They should be brief - no more than a couple of sentences and should come from the moment and not be rehearsed. Whether in silence or in speech, by holding Ralph in our thoughts, everyone present contributes to the power of the Meeting.

There may be a sense of joy as we celebrate and give thanks for the life now completed.

I knew Ralphie as that wild session animal at Sidmouth and Broadstairs over the years of touring the UK from my home in Brooklyn, New York. When he and Sheena invited me to stay at their place, Ralph would make me custom CDs to play in my rental car to get me through the traffic jams on the M25. Jameson's, late night laughter, concertina tunes and stories were our delight.

On my last visit, this past November, Sheena warned me that Ralph had taken to his sick bed and not to expect too much from him. Even so, when I arrived, Ralph was up making Shepherd's Pie, perhaps his final meal. We feasted and for one last evening, the old Ralphie was back. What a daft, charming, exasperating and sensitive soul. RIP Ralphie, I'll never forget you.

BTW......"Ralphie" was always a fine contributor here. He came to Mudcat in 2001 and always had knowledgeable and passionate comments PLUS could many times be counted on to have some funny things to add in the BS fray.   

Not long after he arrived he and I PM'ed a few times when I saw he might be getting a bit ...... I dunno' what but I'll use "overwrought" by some of our resident jackasses......er, uh, trolls. I think the following response showed everything I needed to know about him in a nutshell. Intelligence, self knowledge, and above all(for me)....hmor.....wait, I'll make that humour just for him.

Pat. I'm honoured!...Have had 6 messages so far.
As a Brit, I find this whole forum, not only useful, but also fascinating.
I've even got wound up meself over a couple of topics (Celtic Music?) Only because I hate to see injustice, of any kind.

I was so sorry to hear the news via Chris Timson's Radway list. I first met Ralphie when he and James Patterson were regular guests at St Albans Folk Club and then later he came with Crows. As the club closed in 1983, that's a long time ago. It has always a pleasure to run into him in other places over the years, especially in recent years, after I started to frequent the Radway and enjoyed his presence and music there.

I can't make it tomorrow morning but will send Sheena a card.

Ralphie received a good turnout,a standing room only funeral service at the West Herts crematorium. The Quaker service promoted tears, laughter and thoughtful contemplation centred around Ralphie's life, and the session at the pub afterwards was one he would have approved of. I'm also posting on behalf of Nic & Julia Jones & their daughter, Helen. Nic desperately wanted to attend, but neither Julia nor Helen were well enough to make the long drive up from Devon. Ralph was a close friend of Nic's, & as some of you know, that friendship extended into Nic's professional life too. Nic, Julia & Helen will be forever grateful to Ralph for his many 'technical kindnesses', his attention to detail & his unstinting loyalty.
       I'm repeating myself from an earlier post, but I want to add my personal thanks to Ralph for gently coaxing & encouraging me through two recording sessions, back in 2005. I wasn't in good health, physically or mentally, but with that 'nothing's too much trouble attitude' of his, we got the job done.
      To end on a lighter note (no pun intended), after the Service, I got hopelessly lost trying to find the Friends Meeting House for refreshments...ended up on the M25, going South instead of North & decided to head for home. So Sheena, apologies for my absence.

Some people were asking about recordings of Ralph, and I find he's put some online here:

I found it a lovely reminder of some his other collaborations ...

Other memories include him as sound engineer for "Andy Cronshaw and ...", most memorably at a concert which my memory insists was in the Shaw Theatre, which almost certainly means it was somewhere else ... It was one of the gigs where June Tabor was the star of the "and ...", and Ralphie was particularly pleased with it (June's encore of "Catch a Falling Star" sticks in my mind. Then there was the Jumpleads gig in Carenas at Sidmouth where Ralph did the PA "as a favour" ... His christening of Carenas as "The black hole" stuck ...

We must have met him more than 30 years ago ... Chris, my wife, had not been playing very long and was busking on the terrace at a Bracknell Folk Festival. Ralph came along, recognised her McCann duet, said "I've got one of those ...", fetched it, joined in, and in the most encouraging way showed something more of what you could do with the instrument. Too soon he had to go off to do something, saying "We must get together and do this again next year." Despite that not happening, that musical exchange was a great boost to Chris's playing. On a few of our many many meetings over the years they found themselves in the same session, most recently all-too-briefly at the Stowmarket East Anglian Traditional Music day a couple of years ago. Sadly they'll never play together again ...

I note the Folkipedia site suggests Ralph provided PA for many bands ... That made me laugh, 'cause whatever may have happened recently, for many years Ralph would act as sound engineer, providing someone else was providing the PA. I remember him telling me of turning up at one gig (it might have been another Andy Cronshaw one) with two mics and no other kit, and having problems persuading the venue that he really WAS the sound engineer for the evening's gig, and they really should let him in ...

Re Ralphie's recordings, I think it might be worth highlighting the fact that he also put up some examples of his work as a sound engineer on the site as well, under the heading of Mixes. As to the entries on Folkopedia ... guilty, I'm afraid. PA/Sound Engineer, it was all the same to me at the time that I wrote that, and he didn't correct any of it. It's an entry I shall be changing (there were other items on there that needed to be amended and brought up to date even before the sad events of a month and a bit ago.

After a few years gap - I knew Ralph in London in the 1980s, he was a lovely chap and a good friend and played concertina at my farewell party in March-April 1986 at the Grafton Arms when I was departing for Australia, where I have resided since (I have a tape of the night somewhere, should dig it out).

The main reason for this note is that I have recently been digitising some of my folk-related photos from that and other eras, as noted on this other mudcat thread at https://mudcat.org/thread.cfm?threadid=165268, and have included some images of Crows (including Ralph) taken at Towersey Festival in 1980 and in London in 1983. Thanks Kitty! Actually Mick was my original introduction to Ralph, as I shared a flat with him in Harrogate in the late 70s, and Ralph+James would visit for Crows practices and occasional gigs. Later I moved to London and looked up Ralph again, which was the start of a nice friendship until I left in '86...

Hi all,

It turns out I do have a couple of tunes on tape, recorded by Ralph during my "going away to Australia" farewell night in London in 1986, which as part of a tardy digitising project I now have as a wave file, just 32 years later. They are what you might call "medium fi" - recorded on a reasonable cassette machine of the day through decent-ish mikes but as room sound only, some distance from the mikes, but quite listenable nonetheless.

I would be happy to take suggestions as to what to do with this file since it should probably be hosted as part of some appropriate site (that is, if it is good form to post such files at all in the creator's absence), and fans of Ralph's work would probably enjoy hearing it.

Good to see those photos of Ralphie, Eric, Crows and Paddingtons. Hope you don't mind, but I have shared the link to my Facebook wall, as quite a few people in those photographs are friends on there, but don't all frequent Mudcat.

Re the tape recordings, as one who was talked into taking up the Maccann duet by Ralphie, and performing some duets on it with him in a show we performed over a couple of years I would be very interested to hear them. How about putting them up on Soundcloud?

Hi Irene,

I am not really into posting recordings on Soundcloud, especially of other people whose permission I do not have to do so. Copyright is a funny thing: if I take a photo of a performer, I own the copyright, but if I make a tape or video the copyright rests with the performer (or his/her estate I am guessing) and also potentially whoever else may have publishing rights over the material performed if it is not original (so no Paul Simon, Ralph McTell or other songs/tunes without their owners' permission...)

Nonetheless, I can share the two tunes with you or other interested parties via dropbox if you send me a PM or a message via Facebook, or email me at tonyrees49 (at) gmail.com . I guess it's really up to Ralph's estate to decide whether and what to post of his work publicly, and I am more than happy to send them the files.
