Subject: Lyr Add: EASY MONTHLY PAYMENT BLUES From: Jim Dixon Date: 02 Jan 14 - 10:31 PM A novelty record in a bouncy western swing style, from the late 1940s: EASY MONTHLY PAYMENT BLUES As recorded by Randy Hughes 1. I bought a car and a radio, A mixer and a fishin' pole, And fancy books to go up on my shelf, A sweeper and a pair o' pants, And a new device to kill the ants, And a washer that'll run by itself. 2. The salesmen smile as they sing: "Credit is the finest thing— A dollar down and a dollar in a week" But I didn't notice in the past That the weeks were flyin' by so fast Till the bills come pilin' in a heap. CHORUS: I got the no-money-down, easy-monthly-payment blues. Ev'ry thing I buy I'm bound to lose. There's a man at the front door, one a-bangin' on the back. I got those easy-monthly-payment blues. 3. I bought some books to make me laugh, Some records for my phonograph, Some jewelry just to keep my sweetie gay, A fog light and a set of tires, And a bathtub for that home of ours, And a table that is always in the way. 4. A coupon from the magazine Said I could try out their machine For thirty days without a bit of pay, Those thirty days is awful quick. Their lawyers, too, are mighty slick. They garnisheed my wages yesterday. CHORUS AS ABOVE. [The following additional chorus is from EASY PAYMENT BLUES performed by Roy Hogsed:] CHORUS 2: I got the no-money-down, easy-monthly-payment blues. Ev'ry thing I buy I'm bound to lose. There's a man stuck in the chimney, one a-peepin' through the crack. I got those easy-monthly-payment blues. [The following additional verses and chorus are from EASY PAYMENT BLUES by Rudy Sooter:] 5. I bought a rug; I bought a chair. I bought a thing to grow my hair, And I bought a trap to bump off all the mice. A kitchen stove and a coffee pot, And a fence to go around my lot, And plastic teeth that always look so nice. 6. All the news that I read's Got pictures of the things I need, And I hear about 'em on the radio, Of vitamins and liver pills, And things to cure up all my ills, So I'd grab my hat and then away I'd go. CHORUS 3: I got the no-money-down, easy-monthly-payment blues. Ev'ry thing I buy I'm bound to lose. With a warrant and a movin' van, they come to get my pots and pans, And I can't even pay for my shoes. * * * DISCOGRAPHY: 78s: Roy Hogsed, EASY PAYMENT BLUES, Capitol 40133, credited to Rudy Sooter, 1948 Randy Hughes and Band, THE EASY MONTHLY PAYMENT BLUES, Tennessee 778, 1951.
