Subject: Mundo de Pixinguinha: Brazilian choro From: Stilly River Sage Date: 04 Jan 14 - 11:06 AM Today on National Public Radio this story Pushing A Tradition Forward, Bandolim In Hand played (I'm pasting in the text so it is here in case the web page is lost): Alfredo Viana was one of the superstars of the Brazilian musical style known as choro. The flautist and saxophonist, better known by the nickname Pixinguinha, pushed the boundaries of choro by incorporating jazz and ragtime into his compositions. I am in love! This music is so appealing and infectious! SRS |
Subject: RE: Mundo de Pixinguinha: Brazilian choro From: GUEST,Jack Campin Date: 04 Jan 14 - 11:28 AM It's safe to say Pixinguinha would approve. Is it? Pixinguinha's compositions are short, tight and to the point, rather like Scottish dance tunes in their precise contruction. No rambly improvisations or clever-dick jazz chordings. And most of his work was as a duo with the sax player Benedito Lacerda, where the point was how much two guys could do on straight melody instruments. |

Subject: RE: Mundo de Pixinguinha: Brazilian choro From: GUEST,Stim Date: 05 Jan 14 - 02:34 AM Thanks for reminding me about Pixinguinha, SRS. There is a lot of his stuff on Spotify, as well as De Holanda's stuff. Choro is, at its heart, dance music. De Holanda seems to have lost that... |
Subject: RE: Mundo de Pixinguinha: Brazilian choro From: Stilly River Sage Date: 05 Jan 14 - 11:07 AM I'm only just beginning to explore the topic, after hearing the story yesterday. I'll need to look for performances on YouTube. SRS |
Subject: RE: Mundo de Pixinguinha: Brazilian choro From: GUEST,Stim Date: 05 Jan 14 - 11:57 PM Again, check Spotify. You can download the program and listen to just about anything you can think of, for free. The sound quality tends to be better than You Tube, you crate play lists, save favorites, and, my favorite, search for everything by an artist play it all for hours. Did I mention that it was free? |
