The Cross Keys pub in Knaresborough has a new landlord (Alan) since the end of November and he is keen to promote music in the pub – he is the singer with a ska band himself. Anyway, he has set up the arrangements for an acoustic night every Tuesday evening at 8.30pm starting from January 14th. I haven't been involved with organising it but have agreed to be one of the rolling rota of hosts once a month on the second Tuesday of the month starting with February 11th. I am away or otherwise committed for most of January so won't get to go to one myself as a player until Feb 4th.

I don't know how folky it will be on the other weeks but I hope to attract a good mixed crowd for my monthly stint and intend to turn up to some of the other ones to see how it pans out. It will be great for me if it does become established as I seem to have to travel some distance to do any playing at the moment and it would be nice to be able to reinstate the tradition in the Knaresborough/Harrogate area. Apologies for the clash with the tunes sessioneers at the Tap and Spile in Harrogate and the open mic in Beverley but, as I say, I had no hand in the arrangements.

The Cross Keys details are:

The Cross Keys
Cheapside
Knaresborough
North Yorkshire
HG5 8AX
Tel 01423 863562

It is owned by the Ossett Brewery and has a good range of real ales from their own brews and others. For my session I have made arrangements for performers to receive a free drink from the landlord.

I hope that you can come and try this out either on my week or any of the others – it would be good to have a lively first night anyway.

Cheers

Roger

Roger
Is it best to park in the Castle Yard and what time do you start

I think that the castle yard is probably the closest place unless there is a gap in the street parking immediately outside the pub. Aiming for 8.30 start .

Roger

Sorry we didn't make it, what with traffic problems on the A1 and the weather we decided to give it a miss, I hope you had a good night

Quite understandable Iain. Several people called off because of the snow forecast. However, we had a good time anyway - the next one that I am running is 11th March.

Out of the weekly sessions that started in January I have been hosting just one - the second Tuesday of the month. This has developed into a nice little session and we have been encouraged to take on twice a month.

Consequently, I will be hosting the first and third Tuesday nights of each month starting in August on the 5th of that month. The start is 8.30 but come early to get a seat.

The session has become largely guitar based with the odd bit of mandolin, but I personally would love to see some more musicians coming in - concertina, fiddle accordian etc. would be most welcome as would singers without instruments. I would love to be able to reproduce my sessions in Beverley where we had everything and anything in an atmosphere of mutual respect.

The other weeks continue on a free-for-all basis too, but most of the players seem to prefer a bit of structure.

Roger
