Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 1999 - Group Photo From: Bill D Date: 19 Dec 20 - 10:55 AM That needs clarification... it is NOT me #15 in the B&W pic. There was some shuffling. This was taken with my first digital camera, which I was not pleased with, and which I returned right after the Getaway. I may have been the only person there with one. Oh my... now, upon looking again at pic Joe Offer posted a few years back, I see myself AND my wife in the same pic. I can only assume we took at least 3 pics. Maybe #15 took the last one. Memories include Big Mick appearing very late Friday night after driving almost non-stop from Michigan..... and does anyone else remember the unloading area near the mess hall? There was a **low** steel chain between two posts to prevent people from driving cars further. Late one night..?Sat?.. I was walking back from my cabin and not seeing the chain, tripped on it and fell flat... OOOF... Jeri happened to be maybe 30 ft, away near the building and rushed over to see if I was badly hurt, asking me to take it easy. She had medical training in the military and was ready to help. Fortunately, I was only a little bruised and scratched. Oh... BTW... much music happened between falls and pic taking... |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 1999 - Group Photo From: Bill D Date: 19 Dec 20 - 10:30 AM Memories... I took the top pic with the identifying numbers, then my wife, Ferrara, took the bottom one while I ran over and kneeled at the far left. We are fewer now, but still doing what we can. I just 'attended'...virtually... my 42nd consecutive Getaway. Thank, Voyager |

Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 1999 - Group Photo From: voyager Date: 19 Oct 20 - 01:41 PM To restate our mission - A 1999 meeting of the Folklore Society of Greater Washington (fsgw_dot_org) and the Mudcat online traditional music community (mudcat_dot_org). Characters in this crowd include Songster Bob Clayton, Sandy and Carolyn Paton, Big Mick, Roger from Baltimore, Ferrara, Westra, Charlie Baum and the like. This is the party I belong to. I was personally honored by Sandy Paton to perform a family version of 'Fox Went Out On a Chilly Night'. This was the first post to the Mudcat in 1999 - At a family reunion this summer my mother-in-law showed me a version of this folk song which had been in the archives for many years. As an amateur musicologist I was interested in the 'alternate lyrics' to this classic folk song. Thought list readers might be interested so here goes..... THE FOX The old fox stepped out one moonshining night Stood upon his hind feet just about right I'll have some meat for my supper this night Before I leave this townee (townee, townee) I'll have some meat for my supper this night Before I leave this townee He went on down to the blacksmith's gate, There he saw an old black drake Come on along old drake and go along with me You're the finest old fellow in this townee (REPEAT AS PER FIRST VERSE) The old drake sat still and the word cried NO Just sat still 'cause he didn't want to go If you eat no meat 'til you eat meat of mine You'll eat no meat in the townee (REPEAT) He went on down by the farmer's gate There he saw an old grey goose Come along old goose and go with me You're the finest old fellow in the townee (REPEAT) The old goose sat still and the word cried NO Just sat still 'cause he didn't want to go If you eat no meat 'til you eat meat of mine You'll eat no meat in the townee (REPEAT) He went on home to his den Out come the young ones 8-9-10 O father, O father when you again You've had no luck in this townee (REPEAT) He went on back on his back track He took the old grey goose by the neck Her wing went flip-flop over his back Her feet went dingle dangle down-ee (REPEAT) Old mother tipped up in the bed Out of the window she poked her head Old man, old man the grey goose is gone I thought I heard her go quack, quack-eo (REPEAT) The old man jumped up in his shirtail And with toe dogs on the trail They caught the fox at the end of the trail And that was the end of the fox-e-o (REPEAT) END voyager |

Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 1999 - Group Photo From: Joe Offer Date: 19 Oct 20 - 01:04 AM I got my first digital camera in 2004. The pictures it produces were more-or-less equivalent to 4 x 6 film photographs, or to what I could get from scanning one of those photos. The file size was about 600-800 kb. Looking abck at theme, they seem fairly primitive. And Voyager's photo from 1999 would of course be even more primitive. By 2008, photos were still pretty small but getting better - file size was more like 2.7 MB. The file size on current photos is more like 6.5 MB, and the quality is much better. And I have a 4 terabyte hard drive for my photos and sound files, so I can store stuff like that. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 1999 - Group Photo From: Jeri Date: 18 Oct 20 - 06:35 PM I think a lot of photos back when this one was posted, had to be smaller in size to put on line or to mail. I know I had to sacrifice quality to be able to send stuff with my dial-up modem, and an e-mail program that limited file size. Whoever took it may have the original, but otherwise, this is as good as it gets. Thanks for trying. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 1999 - Group Photo From: Stilly River Sage Date: 18 Oct 20 - 06:11 PM There is no way to make that look better - without major major filter work. I pushed it way down, to 400x228px. I'll send that to Joe. Click to display (joeweb) |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 1999 - Group Photo From: Stilly River Sage Date: 18 Oct 20 - 05:37 PM I just constrained it to a smaller area to make the pixels work a little better. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 1999 - Group Photo From: Jeri Date: 18 Oct 20 - 05:21 PM It wasn't photoshopped. You just fucked with it. When I first saw it (years ago, before Joe posted it), I thought it had problems. It had too few pixels. I definitely don't think I look like me. |
Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 1999 - Group Photo From: Stilly River Sage Date: 18 Oct 20 - 01:48 PM If you want to call it photoshopped then I should have applied a filter to clear it up a bit more. It's a really small photo. If the original sender can send me as large a copy as he has, I'll see what I can do with it. |

Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway 1999 - Group Photo From: Stilly River Sage Date: 17 Oct 20 - 07:39 PM Joe, can you reduce the size of the image as it displays? It's stretched too much and the features aren't clear. |

Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway99 - Group Photo (Sandy P.) From: voyager Date: 15 Jan 14 - 03:27 PM If a good picture is worth 1000 words, then we're on the way with this FSGW99-Mudcat group photo. So here's a little better resolution - FSGW99-Mudcat at Prince William Forest Park (hi-res) Besides Sandy's workshop/sing of 'The Fox' my other highlights that trip were meeting Fortunato (not in photo) and stumbling across a CIA/OSS historical marker on the grounds. Here's that sidebar - Prince William Forest Park From 1942 to 1945, at least two branches of the OSS trained on the grounds of Prince William Forest Park—Special Operations (Training Area A) and Communications (Training Area C). In the security that the forest offered, the Special Operations Branch trained its advanced recruits how to operate behind enemy lines in sabotage, guerilla leadership and other forms of subversion.6 New recruits were tasked with concealing their own identity while trying to learn as much information as possible from fellow trainees. Recruits also were: Taught how to use weapons, radios and codes; Make and disarm booby traps; and Make low-level parachute jumps from aircraft.7 The OSS Communications Branch also trained its recruits in Prince William Forest Park. Recruits in this division learned Morse code and ciphers, covert radio practices and maintenance, as well as the use of weapons and martial arts. I guess they should have include Folk Music Hootenanny's in their regimen :^D voyager |

Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway99 - Group Photo (Sandy P.) From: Vixen Date: 14 Jan 14 - 12:15 PM Wow--so cool to read all these posts from the wonderful people we met at the few Getaways we got away to before our annual gig at the CT Renaissance Faire ate up all our autumn weekends. bbc--I don't mind being Allison if I get to have her voice too! I'm still Vicki, though, and Reynaud is still Tim. Annamil was definitely at a Ramblewood Getaway, because I remember her SO (whose name I forget) taking a "drum solo" in one of the jam sessions in a cabin there. I wish I'd met more of the Mudcats and FSGW folks so I could help with the blanks! And it's bittersweet seeing all the people we truly enjoyed who have passed on...but I do wonder why I'm listed on the OBIT thread as Vic Baker...I'm pretty sure I'm still here. Must be another Vic Baker? Anyway, sending hugs for all the great memories, V (&R) |

Subject: RE: FSGW Getaway99 - Group Photo (Sandy P.) From: beardedbruce Date: 14 Jan 14 - 09:24 AM I was at that Getaway, but not active in Mudcat. I had been bringing a Zenith 248 ( AT class machine) to copy and distribute the Digital Tradition floppies. Sonnet 03/11/07 MLXV To absent friends and lost loves let us drink, Recalling smiles and times that all once shared. On those no longer near let us now think, To bring back reasons that for them we cared. Some are not here, yet still remain, within The songs and words they left behind. And some Are in our souls, when hopes or dreams begin: A part of what each of us have become. To those apart let us now raise a glass And take a moment to give thanks for all That we from others have ourselves received. The world's a school, and our lives just a class In playing well with others. Can we call It more? Are we by our egos deceived? |
