Alan and Maggie... you will be missed!.. and I thank you for your kind words! :-)

Moonbeams and the music that I surround myself with has brought me much happiness.. not to mention the great friends and wonderful audiences I have met along the way too.. It is a hobby that I enjoy greatly.. and I am very proud of the reputation the festival and concerts have gained over the years.. a few digs on Mudcat ain't going to spoil it for me. :-)
But it is such a shame that this post has generated negative comments.. as I am only trying to promote this lovely event and the artists performing.

Really sorry that we can't make the event this year. We are tarred and feathered traddies but thoroughly enjoyed the spirit, fun, professionalism, enthusiasm and eclectic mix of last year's weekend.

That may be your experience, John, in which case I'm sorry to hear it; it certainly hasn't been mine. I've seen much lower standards of musicianship from amateur singer-songwriters and wannabe entertainers in "folk club" settings than I've ever heard from amateur traditional singers. The traddies nearly always have better material, too.

with Moonbeams you know what you will get, which is talented artists singing good songs.
As for "traditional" singers, there are still some great singers around but there is also an amateur "traditional" scene where "traditional singer" is a euphemism for inability to sing anything in a tuneful manner. Approach unaccompanied singers sessions with caution.

All of us are free to choose what type of folk we prefer, the places where we like to listen to it and if a performer, at any level of ability, where we choose to perform.

Please accept that no one type of folk suits everybody and no venue or festival is the place where everybody will choose to go.

I worry about that, obviously, but I don't think it's a real danger. It's all Marlings and Lakemen and Ukulele Orchestras for a few years, then along comes a Young 'Uns or an A Folk Song A Day (and I myself moaned about the song selection on that, but it was about 4/5 traditional by the end).

"I got disillusioned about the 'movement' aspect of it, as time went by, even more so now, when I see how many professional folk singers have all but expunged all traces of traditional repertoire from their own repertoires. I've appeared at festivals where the only traditional songs in the entire weekend were performed by me in my few sets. The situation isn't much different in America. I heard that self-same complaint from a number of people that it's the professionals who are abandoning folk music. But folk music's alive and well among the audience, who are making their own music too. That's certainly true of England. And maybe that's exactly right and proper. Where is folk music? It's alive and well among real people who do real jobs, not to travel around the country with a concertina in their luggage."

A hero of mine said that in 1990 - which, alas, was before I'd even got into folk music. The music was still there when I started taking an interest & I think it'll be there for the next lot of people who want to pick up the torch.

I must agree with just about everything Phil Edwards has written above.

The only issue I might have is to paraphrase the expression "that for evil to occur then it only needs good men to do nothing."

If no one ever challenges what people are promoting / latching onto as folk then the tradition will largely disappear. That in itself might well be a good thing in the short term - at least it will not be sullied by the self seekers.

I am greatly concerned that Whitby Folk Week which was for many years considered a bastion of traditional music is slowly descending into the lowest common denominator that is the music industry.

There are some very strange names on the guest list this year which I would respectfully suggest are not worthy of an event which had an international reputation for presenting the very best of traditional music.

I agree with almost everyone... meaning everyone's probably about to hate me!

Firstly, some people really like traditional songs and find that they don't feel the same about (almost) any other kind of music. And events labelled 'folk' are just about the only kind of events where you can rely on hearing (and singing) traditional songs - so it's understandable if somebody gets a bit narky when a 'folk' event seems to be mostly non-traditional. Personally I'd travel quite a long way for a weekend with the Young 'uns; I wouldn't go half a mile for some of the others on the bill - just not my taste at all. Having said that,

Secondly, it's a bit lacking in manners to express that narkiness on the thread promoting the event, particularly anonymously.

Thirdly - taking up Mrs B's point above (who can it be lurking behind that mysterious pseudonym?) - I did say 'almost' any other kind of music, and I do think that some contemporary songs ring the 'folk' bell loud and clear: they "work" for me in pretty much the same way that traditional songs so often work. But we wouldn't agree on which ones. Speaking personally, an evening of traditional plus songs by MacColl, Tawney and Bellamy would fly by; an evening of traditional plus Jez Lowe, Harvey Andrews and Graeme Miles would have me leaving early. Perfectly good songs, they just don't do that thing... for me. So I find it's the best policy to stick to people who seem to be rooted in traditional song, even if it's not what they sing absolutely all the time. Having said that,

Fourthly, saying that Steve Tilston (for example) is "not folk" is a complete waste of time; the guy's been working in what's generally recognised as the folk area for forty years, for goodness' sake. I used to think it was worth banging the "folk means traditional" drum (along with various other ritual practices, e.g. throwing darts at a picture of Ade Edmondson), just to nudge the consensus my way a bit, but I've come to the conclusion that the "it's not folk" ship has well and truly sailed. And besides, some non-traditional songs are pretty damn good - Peter Bellamy's last release included six of them (including one by Steve Tilston).

Just because a song isn't an anonymous ballad or a shanty doesn't mean it isn't rooted in the folk tradition! Where else would you categorise songs about the demise of the fishing industry for example or about civil unrest if not in the category "folk"? Folk music is a broad church which accommodates a wide variety. And, for me, that's one of the reasons why I love being part of it.

Miranda Sykes and Rex Preston
Miranda and Rex have emerged to become one of the most sought-after duos on the English folk and roots scene. The striking combination of the flame-headed double bass player and virtuoso mandolin player have been described as 'Scintillating, sensitive and brilliant!' (Folk Roots).
Well known for the last eight years as a central component of Show of Hands, Miranda has an exquisite and spine-tingling voice, whilst Rex, with his exuberant and flamboyant playing style, has built a reputation as one of the finest mandolin players in the UK. With Show of Hands off the road for a year, the duo are embarking on an extensive tour of the British Isles in support of their new CD 'Sing A Full Song'.

Edwina Hayes
Edwina Hayes numbers Mike Harding, Chris While and Julie Matthews among her fans. Her beautifully written songs, charming stage presence and voice of an angel have won her a reputation as a true natural talent of gentle folk music. The 2014 Wintour support act for Fairport Convention, the title track of her album Pour Me A Drink was covered by Nanci Griffith who calls her 'the sweetest voice in England' and her cover of the Randy Newman song Feels Like Home was featured in the Cameron Diaz film My Sister's Keeper which has since had over six million plays on You Tube.
As well as touring all over the UK and beyond playing her own gigs, Edwina has in the past twelve months supported Martin Simpson, Vin Garbutt, Barbara Dickson, Phil Beer and Ralph McTell and will be touring Europe in 2015 with Kenny Spiers and Realtime.

Steve Tilston
Steve Tilston is one of our most celebrated song-smiths; widely recognised within the world of folk and contemporary music: the words, arrangements and subtle, quite superb guitar playing could be no one else.
The writer of the classic songs The Slipjigs and Reels, Here's to Tom Paine and The Naked Highwayman, has turned author. Steve has recently published his first novel – full of colourful characters All for Poor Jack is an historical tale set in Bristol and the New World and it's a mighty good read and has been enjoyed by the likes of Bob Dylan no less!

Ewan McLennan
Winner of several awards including the 2011 BBC Radio 2 Horizon Award. Ewan McLennan is an emerging folk artist that has been making headlines. His music combines traditional folk, with an inevitable focus on the music of Scotland, as well as his own self-penned songs that are receiving critical acclaim in their own right. BBC Radio 2's Mike Harding has said of Ewan, 'he sings beautifully, with great sincerity and great empathy, he's terrific!'. His guitar playing, described as 'stunning' , is influenced by the rigour and technique from his years of studying classical guitar, while retaining a unique and compelling sound in which his immersion in folk music is evident.

The Young Uns
With bags of charm, talent, and an abiding enthusiasm for traditional song, The Young Uns are making a big impact on the UK folk scene. Sean Cooney, David Eagle and Michael Hughes bring freshness and dynamism to their arrangements of close harmony songs, both with and without accompaniment. Everything from traditional sea and working songs to more recent compositions is present in their repertoire, and is delivered with originality and flair.

Dan Wilde
Dan Wilde is an emerging singer songwriter whose lyrics have been described as "deeply personal, introspective but also engrossing and charismatic" (Folkwords). For over 5 years Cambridge-based Dan has been performing his own brand of richly observed folk all over the UK while also developing his reputation abroad.
His second album 'Fire In Mind' was released in 2013.

NE3Folk
NE3Folk are a band on a mission. Chris, Cathy and Victoria have been playing together for the past 3 years and in this time have toured Norway twice, made a big impression on the festival scene and have been working hard this winter to produce their debut album "Show us Your Reds". The music they produce is an intriguing mix of self penned music and modern interpretations of traditional tunes. The complex and intertwining arrangements have been described as intelligent and beautiful; a band guaranteed to give a dynamic performance.

Hissyfit
Linda Kelly and Hazel Richings are a close harmony duo who met in Beverley at the beginning of the century! Linda, from the Midlands and Hazel from Central Scotland, enjoy every opportunity to sing. Linda has written many songs, some inspired by the demise of the East Coast fishing industry and related tales and Hazel has added her deep harmony. After singing a capella at the White Horse Folk Club in Beverley and visiting Warwick Folk Festival they've been invited all across England to Festivals.. and to Folk clubs in Chichester, London, Birmingham, Teeside and Devon, up to Edinburgh, as well as the Shanty UK Easter festival at Ellesmere Port. With 3 CDs and a variety of traditional, original and contemporary songs their ever-growing repertoire is delivered with their uniquely blending voices.

Wendy Arrowsmith
Wendy was born in Glasgow, Scotland and has been singing all her life.
She has been performing on the folk music scene in North Yorkshire since 2007, but is now recognised across the UK as a talented songwriter and interpreter of traditional folk song. She plays guitar, mandolin, accordion, whistles and bodhran (tho' not simultaneously!) She has won songwriting competitions at Saltburn 2007, Scarborough Seafest 2008, Ryedale Folk Festival 2009. She released her 3rd CD "Life, Love & Chocolate" in May 2011 to great reviews. Wendy also does singing workshops with children in schools and at festivals using the Kodaly concept of promoting musicality in children using familiar folksongs and playground chants.

Kirsty Bromley
Kirsty Bromley is a singer, dancer, teacher and performer of folk music within the English tradition.
She has been in choirs & musical ensembles from a very early age and much of her formative years involved immersion in the Brass Band tradition. This enabled her to make the transition to the 'other' English tradition, a journey which has been rich, eventful and which continues to challenge her. In 2010, drawing on her considerable musical experience, Kirsty recorded trumpet & backing vocals on Pete Coe's album 'Back Bone' performing along side Chris Coe, Jon Loomes, Michael Beeke and John Adams. She also played with Eliza Carthy, Doug Oates, Matt Quinn, Tom Wright, Dogan Mehmet and Nigel Holmes in the Eliza Carthy Motown Ceilidh Band at Whitby Folk Week in 2010 and Sidmouth Folk Week 2011.

Nick Rooke Band
Nick's musical roots are in the Irish and American folk traditions, and these influences are clearly apparent in his original songs. He and his band seamlessly blend these elements with a 'rock' feel and vigour, resulting in a high energy, infectious performance that always leaves the crowd wanting more.

Andy Stones
Andy Stones is a singer songwriter originally from York, but now living in the East Riding. He takes his influences from the likes of Paul Simon, Clive Gregson, John Martyn and Suzanne Vega and has just finished recording a new three track EP which will go on sale at Moonbeams on Friday 7th March.

would like to say that you do an amazing job organising with your weekends, your stage at Beverley and the summer festival! You obviously have some great contacts, a reputation to book some great acts and bring them to East Yorkshire for a modest price. No one can judge you on this!

I'm afraid what is up for debate is what is considered as "folk" at your events. You do have some artists that respect and appreciate the British folk tradition. Although they may not be simply regurgitating songs and tunes of the past, they are heavily influenced by them, and/or rework traditional material for modern audiences. Some acts that you have supported do this superbly, although quite different, are The Young Uns, Blackbeard's Teaparty, Lau, The Mighty Doonans, Duncan McFarlane Band and Show Of Hands.

However, something that has been observed in your artist line ups is the contemporary singer-songwriter which is what the comment above highlights. Although there is nothing wrong with this, they do feature regularly and quite prominently at Moonbeams. They are not particularly folk influenced and some acts that have performed have been country, blues and occasionally jazz which therefore makes the "folk weekend/festival" somewhat deceiving.

MOONBEAMS MARCH FOLK WEEKEND!

Friday 7th & Saturday 8th March 2014

Held at The Bell Hotel, Driffield, East Yorkshire

Once again Moonbeams will be taking over the Bell Hotel in Driffield on the evening of Friday 7th & ALL DAY Saturday 8th March 2014 for a 'Winter Gathering' of folk concerts in its function rooms (Town Hall and Maple Room) plus singarounds and sessions in the bar.

Here is the impressive line up of artists for this very special weekend!

SPECIAL ACCOMMODATION DEAL

The 18th Century listed hotel is offering a 2 night break deal with the choice of booking a superior or standard room. Booking rooms also entitles guests to its great leisure facilities including swimming pool, sauna, steam room and gym. THE HOTEL BAR

The Hotel oak panelled bar will be offering 'Moonbeams' deals on their lovely bar meals. As well as Wold Top Ales – the bar boasts a stunning collection of over 300 single malt whiskies! Several informal sessions are planned for the bar in between the concert room events, and there are lots of nooks and crannies in the hotel walkways into which to retreat for a quiet coffee or drink to suit!

CAMPING

Camping is available at the Driffield Showground which is situated approx one mile away with toilets and showers on site. Camping is priced at £7.50 per unit, per night.

PARKING

There is limited parking at the back of the Bell Hotel-otherwise there are public car-parks nearby.
