Subject: Lyr Req: Bring My Son Home
From: GUEST,Jeff Parton

Hi everybody.
I'm looking for a song that I've only heard once, a few years ago. As far as I can remember the gist of it was this family living on an island (possibly the Hebrides or somewhere like that)who made a living climbing on the cliffs to get birds' eggs. The woman who sings the song has already lost several sons and has just heard that her remaining son has fallen from the cliff.

The chorus contains the words: "Bring My Son Home".

If anyone can point my in the direction of this song I will be most grateful, whether it is words, tune, or just who wrote or sings it!

Cheers
Jeff

Jeff, would you please provide any further info you recall? Unless someone knows the song, it will likely not be found with the given info.

Thank you.

That's the problem, that's all I can remember. I know it's a long shot, I was just hoping that someone might know the song.

Don't give up hope. There are many people on this forum who have extensive knowledge in music areas. We'll keep the thread in the public eye for a while :-)

The enquiry suggests one song to me, which was written by Gill Reid, who used to attend Newtongrange Folk Club in Midlothian: she won the club's songwriting competition in 2007 with it. If you were in the Edinburgh or S of Scotland area when you heard it, that might be the one, Jeff. There is just one very short video of her on Youtube, but not singing that one.
The practice of going down the cliffs precariously to collect seabird's eggs is documented on old films of St Kilda (which was evacuated in 1930).
And a large number of Gaelic songs feature sons or husbands going off to sea and never returning alive.

That sounds very promising. Is there any way I can contact Gill?

I'm looking into that as we speak.

I'll be at Newtongrange on Thursday of this week, Jeff: will try to find out more then, or might be able to get more info via other friends locally.

Sorry Jeff, further enquiries suggest that wasn't the song you wanted: apologies for raising any false hopes.

I think the once a year collecting of eggs from this island rock off the Hebrides (?) has been discussed or mentioned in mudcat. Can't remember, darn it!

It was a rock island off St. Kilda, if that helps.
