Subject: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: Georgiansilver Date: 10 Jan 14 - 05:53 PM I have been visiting Mudcat for many years to learn about Folk Music.... but why do you come here? Truthful answers would be good! |

Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: akenaton Date: 10 Jan 14 - 06:24 PM I come to have my faith in humanity restored. I believe that some day, intelligence and common sense shall overcome political ideology. I learned about folk music long ago.....before it died. I remember what it sounded like. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: GUEST Date: 10 Jan 14 - 06:32 PM Good one, ake. Trust you are well old friend. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: GUEST,Troubadour Date: 10 Jan 14 - 06:35 PM "I learned about folk music long ago.....before it died. I remember what it sounded like." I come here mainly to follow the music section and access the DT. I come down here occasionally, to be amused by pompous prats who can post the above without seeing the stupidity of their comments. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: akenaton Date: 10 Jan 14 - 06:55 PM That you B?......If it is, ah miss you old buddy!! Keep safe! |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: GUEST,Triplane Date: 10 Jan 14 - 07:11 PM in the music section - looking for new material and to help if possible people looking for old material. In the BS section im doing a psychlogical profile of the ALL the posters Im a Sgt Schultz(Hogans Heroes) fan, my fav phrase is "very interesting" One day my head will fall off reading posts when it dawns on me that some of the opiniated views here are really serious. I have great respect for the moderators even though one of my posts was deleted ... it was too close to the truth as i saw it ...c'est la vie. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: Joe Offer Date: 10 Jan 14 - 08:04 PM I really love researching folk songs, and this is a great place to do that - and I can publish my work here for all to see. -Joe- |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: Joe_F Date: 10 Jan 14 - 08:25 PM I like the threads about songs I like, and the BS threads about this & that. I also look up texts for my big book of magical songs. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: Richard Bridge Date: 10 Jan 14 - 08:32 PM It's very useful to publicise participative folk events. I keep hoping BS may be useful to remind neocons racists and bigots that they are frankly rather less than human and that "We shall overcome". |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: ChanteyLass Date: 10 Jan 14 - 09:27 PM Initially I came here to learn more about folk music. Now I spend more time below the line In the company of many wonderful Mudcatters. There are plenty of very good people here. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: Rapparee Date: 10 Jan 14 - 10:48 PM Music and MOAB -- and sometimes other stuff "below the salt" as well. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: Bill D Date: 10 Jan 14 - 11:16 PM Visit?? I LIVE here! I came for folk music in Nov. of 1996, because I knew those who planned the database... and have never left. It has widened my views of many things, and made ME think carefully about my own opinions and learn to phrase them.... slowly. After a few years, Mudcatters started coming to the FSGW Getaway, and has widened my musical perspectives... made many new friends. With all that, I owe Max & Mudcat my loyalty to try to make it relevant below the line as well as above. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: Jack the Sailor Date: 10 Jan 14 - 11:37 PM Im a Sgt Schultz(Hogans Heroes) fan, my fav phrase is "very interesting" I believe that was Artie Shaw on Laugh-In Shulz said "I see nothing... nothing!" |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: Ebbie Date: 11 Jan 14 - 01:37 AM And the phrase was 'verrrrry interesting.' I come here because I feel in touch with some of my favorite people (I am learning to ignore the posts of my least favorite people most of the time). Oh, and I always scan the thread titles above the line- when it appears I may know something on the subject I click on it. That's fairly rare, however. But I do know a lot of BS. :) |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: GUEST,Musket Date: 11 Jan 14 - 02:50 AM I come here to dig out old friends I lost touch with when stopping playing the folk circuit as a performer many years ago. Sadly, and recently too often, this has led to trying to get to their funerals. I have been to many concerts and clubs, recalled old songs and added them to my list to play when in local clubs and caught up with lots of old mates. All through Mudcat. I am also amazed at how stupidity and crassness can pervade. Hence pointing and laughing at attitudes that have no place really. It's a large world and everyone has to be somewhere I suppose. But whilst there is one in every village, we appear to have a bit if a commune. |

Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: Larry The Radio Guy Date: 11 Jan 14 - 03:36 AM As the old song, Arkansas Hard Luck Blues goes: "The only reason I'm sticking around now, folks Is to see what the heck is a-gonna happen next." |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: VirginiaTam Date: 11 Jan 14 - 04:09 AM I honestly don't know why? |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: Will Fly Date: 11 Jan 14 - 04:24 AM I just like discussing music and musicology and performance - not necessarily folk - and to have a laugh from time to time. Which is why I tend to stay above the line for musical discussions, and below the line to laugh (silently, to myself) at some of the arguments put forward. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 11 Jan 14 - 05:35 AM I enjoy the (sometimes heated) discussions in the BS section. I feel I 'know' many of the regular posters and like their personalities. In the Music department, I often find something to interest me, which prompts me to explore further, on Youtube for example. I like Mucat very much, and would miss it if I stopped 'dropping in'. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: GUEST, topsie Date: 11 Jan 14 - 05:54 AM To find out what is going on and, sadly, one reason I keep coming back is to find out if anyone has died - |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: The Sandman Date: 11 Jan 14 - 06:21 AM I am afraid I have not died yet, when I do I would like to go in the style of Tommy Cooper.I visit mudcat to learn. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: GUEST,Grishka Date: 11 Jan 14 - 06:48 AM Mudcat BS is one of the rare places where every participant feels to be winning a glorious victory over her or his adversaries, and is happy about that. In our world of pessimism, such a place must be cherished. (I don't have to read it, do I?) |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: Waddon Pete Date: 11 Jan 14 - 07:22 AM ...to keep in touch... There are some lovely people on here, many of whom I know in "real" life (and many more I would like the chance to meet). It's a community like no other. Peter |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: Allan C. Date: 11 Jan 14 - 08:52 AM As with many of us I first came here looking for a song lyric, (I believe it was "The Ox Driver's Song," and I still do so on occasion. But my first official post (May 1998) reflects that I got sucked into one of the many discussions about the definition of folk. I've been truly blessed in that, along with Bill Sables, I was able to travel to meet a good many of the folks here on their home turf, thus putting faces with the some of the names here. Attending a few Mudgathers and FSGW events furthered that process to the point that I feel comfortable calling some of you my friends. If you should happen upon an opportunity to meet some of these fine folks, I highly recommend doing so. I always scan the "upper deck" to see if there is anything there that catches my eye: songs I know, songs I might like to know, tidbits of folk music history, folklore and yes, the obituaries. Over the years I have imparted most of what I know about such things. (You can find my "illuminating" comments in some of those threads listed above a previously discussed topic.) For this reason I have very little to add to what is found in the "upper deck". Down in the "lower deck" I enjoy finding the occasional topic about which I feel comfortable adding some portion of my paltry knowledge. I will admit a degree of frustration (read disgust,) with some of the "discussions" that evolve into two contributors comparing the length of their male members. But there are many threads there that are well worth reading. I especially appreciate those that express good wishes or even condolences to those of us who are experiencing difficulties. For the most part I eschew threads dealing with religion or politics. I learned long ago that such subjects can rarely be discussed without someone's attempting to persuade someone else to their beliefs, sometimes heatedly. It is below the line that I sometimes get to learn about how things are done in places different from where I live. Often this is demonstrated through threads about food and drink, from which I have learned a lot. As you can see I have a hard time giving a simple answer to the initial question. I love this community of which the discussions, both above and below the line, reflect the intellect and caring of its constituents. It is those two elements that continue to draw me here. |
Subject: RE: BS: Why do ~YOU visit Mudcat? From: Roger the Skiffler Date: 11 Jan 14 - 10:24 AM I used to come here just looking for lyrics. Now I come to learn more from better informed people, to catch up with friends I've never met in person (sadly some have left us along the way) and to enjoy the amusing writing and Uncle Dave-O's jokes "down below". Mind you , never played golf in my life. I'd hate to spoil a good walk. And the jumpers! You see, down here in BS, it is how Richard Thompson envisaged it. You can be a gambler who never played a hand You can be a sailor who never left dry land You can be Lord Jesus, all the world will understand Down where the drunkards roll. |
