Hi, Alaska Mike. Thanks for the cool story about the piper playing your tune.

The same thing happened to me when I heard an alleluia I had composed being sung in a church 200 miles away. Naturally it turned out that somebody there knew somebody here who knew me and who had passed the song along. But first hearing my own tune in a totally new place gave me the oddest feeling.

I have two of your CD's. Just a couple weeks ago we were singing your song about the changing of the clocks. It took us three days to find them all.

Lots of church choral and/or pipe organ music. I get a regular fix from OrganLive and BBC radio online. Loud and proud happened long before rock and roll.

Jez Lowe's "The last of the Widows" which is about the Easington colliery disaster in the early 50s absolutely chokes me up cos my dad was an Easington man who lost a lot of friends that day. I love the song and would love to perform it but I really don't think I could ever keep my composure to do so. Similarly, Jean Ritchie's "West Virginia Mining Disaster song" is deeply moving in its simplicity and the perspective of a waiting wife.

The sheer variety of songs and music listed here is fascinating! I adore Janis Joplin and agree the comments that her intensity of performance was in a class of its own.

Point of interest:

A count of the titles mentioned since the start of this thread indicates that almost 90% of the songs/melodies most loved by Catters (that make them drop everything) are...

*not* traditional.

(I didn't count performances. For example, Steeleye versions of trad songs counted as "traditional" despite the modern style.)

Last week we had our Clare Festival of Traditional Singing. One of the guests was Aine Uí Cheallaigh, sean nos singer par excellence. She sang an english translation of Donal Óg and stuck me to the floor, as well as everyone else at the session. It always gets me, in Irish or English, the sheer despair of it all, not to mention the beauty of words and air.   I love Leontyne Price singing O Holy Night and would not let Christmas eve go by without hearing it at least once.

I was at a Celtic event one sunny Memorial Day when I heard a lone highland piper playing a mornful tune. I stopped and listened raptly until it was completed, trying to place the name of the melody. As the piper was finishing to great applause, I realized that it was the tune to a song I had written many years before. The piper had learned it from another celtic performer and had no idea that I had written it. It was very cool.

Anything that makes me get up and Dance.
That'll be mainly House Music, Drum 'n' Base and Electronica probably, I have definite and unashamed weak spots for some cheesy tracks like this: Gypsy Woman, Put Your Hands up For Detroit. And others like this: Sunking, Veneranda

Though I can also do dancing to blokes banging bongos/djembes etc. (doesn't *have* to be synthesised), I guess it's all the same really as long as you're barefoot, throwing yourself about like a nut-head, while remaining just enough on the right side of sober/drunk to not quite fall over..

'Streets' Ralph McTell. I know some think its a bit commercial, and there was a time when he didnt like it and wouldnt sing it. But he did it last night and it really is a great song.

We live down the street from Lisa Null; I've never heard Virginia Alders, so I'll pester her to remember it sometime. I also have never heard a recording of Woodie Guthrie doing Tom Joad, so I didn't realize Andy Irvine's version is a new tune. I love the way they weave in "John Hardy" with the song. Where could I find Woodie's original?

Reba McEntire singing "Whoever's in New England," Arlo Guthrie with "City of New Orleans," Willy Nelson singing "Pancho and Lefty," the Beatles' "A Day in the Life," Billy Holiday and "God Save the Child" and "Strange Fruit," Paul Robeson singing "Ballad for Americans." First time I heard "Magdalen Laundry" was on my car radio. I had to pull over into the emergency stopping lane, and bawl my eyes out. 'Scuse the ignorance, but I didn't catch the name of the woman singing it - someone 'McLoughlin' I think (who is probably SO well known to all the "dyed-in-the-wool's" that they're falling about laughing right now!) I have heard "Magdalen Laundry" recorded by another woman who shall remain nameless, but it seems a rather chill and antiseptic rendition to me, after my near-collision experience with the car-radio version.

Do you mean the 'Over the hills and far away' as sung by John Tams, the theme for the 'Sharpe' series? If so, it's available on CD, same name, credited to John Tams and Dominic Muldowney, and well worth getting, if only for the title song and Kate Rusby doing the 'Recruited Collier'. Now there's a SINGER who stops me in my tracks, and I'm a pretty straight sort of girl, but she gets me all hot and flustered... Lovely person she is too.

One that stopped me in my tracks recently was the Cliff Richard version of the Lord's Prayer, to the tune of Old Lang Syne - not because of what it is, which is a noble idea, but because a singer of his talent has made such a complete and utter bollocks of it, the phrasing is all to pieces and the content isn't moving with the tune. There were so many little things that could have been done to make it more singable, but that would have meant changing one or two words, and we know you can't possibly do that......... How he could have allied himself with the end result is beyond me... Ah well, it's a year early anyway. (Alright, alright, shuttup shuttup shuttup......)

Whoops, let's try that again. I'd like to say it's House Carpenter or Matty Groves or something like that but it's Crossroads off Wheels of Fire by Cream that makes me assume the deer in the headlights position. The singing and playing is filled with such raw desperation it never fails to overwhelm me. Lil' Dorritt- Beeswing also does it to me. I never get to hear it here in Jimmy Buffett Land unless I put it on the hi-fi or sing it my self. Problem with the latter is I start choking up about 2/3'rds of the way through. Squeak- I loved your inherited coat analogy and totally agree with your assessment of Bleak Midwinter (not blowing smoke to get free VC). I learned an instrumental version of it last year and will start practising it today. Have you ever heard I Fell into a Vat of Chocolate by the Smothers Brothers? It will stop you in your tracks.

the first one that came to mind for me was elvis' are you lonesome tonight. i can remember the day it "literally" stopped me in my tracks. after that thay just came flooding in like the old friends they are. just recently, sarah mclaughlin (sp?) in the arms of the angels, took me quite by surprise. summertime. moonlight sonata. and yes, i am also a leonard cohen fan. gosh, there are many. and many that you all mentioned i have never heard, but would like to. oh, on tv one time i heard dwight yokum do in the garden, yes, it stopped me in my tracks. oops i belive the phrase was drop everything. there are so many folk and blues songs that do. that's why we love them. thanks, what a great thread and an interesting place.

It doesn't matter how often a song is sung, or done to death or whatever, there is always someone who hasn't heard it yet. How are songs going to be passed on, whether they are folk, classical, religious or just plain stupid (what is the tune for great green gobs of gopher goo??), if people feel they can't sing them anywhere? I hate 'The fields of Athenry' as much as the next man (what do you mean you like it....), heard it five times in one session a few years ago, but that doesn't mean that I couldn't stand hearing it again (under certain circumstances), and I know several people who heard the parody last year and had never heard the original. Do keep singing the songs, because that is the whole point of folk.

A song is like an inherited coat, it should feel a little uncomfortable at first, and then you wonder how you did without it. You wear it everywhere, until folks wonder if you ever had another coat. Then it goes out of fashion. You hang it in your wardrobe until a year or so has passed, and then someone will come along and ask where it went. You'll go home, take it out and ask if this is what they meant. They'll say, 'I've been looking for something like this', and the circle starts again.

I'm the worst person at heckling people who sing the same song continuously, once attended a club for a month where the 5 resident singers had a repertoire of seven, count them, seven songs between them....., but it does mean that I can sing those seven songs, practically in my sleep. There are people there who have never heard them, maybe I should start the circle going again.

On the subject of Bogle songs (and maybe a leetle off-topic), is it just me or is there alost a taboo about singing either the Green Fields of France or the Band Played Waltzing Matilda in 'serious' sessions? They're both stunningly effective 'drop everything' songs, but both have been sung to death, it seems, to the point where most of us are simply too embarrassed to sing them.

Further thought on Janis,Piaf and others engaged in peak performances, the high that you get when you do it is usually accompanied by a crash of equal magnitude. If you don't have someone to catch you when you fall or someplace of sanctity, that does not require drugs and acohol to ease the pain, the results can be tragic.

I haven't seen Ani DiFranco in concert, but do love her songwriting. My daughter made a wonderful mix tape after my engagement ended last winter, full of sass and fury. This was my introduction to Ani (Untouchable Smile, I think) and I continue to find her surprising and moving. I don't think anything I've heard, however, reaches the level of intensity Neil's talking about with Janis. She was awesome. I've always wondered if you can only get to that state by making yourself somewhat crazy, either chemically crazy or through religious trance or something.

I notice several references to Ian & Sylvia, (which refer to three songs I've never heard of--they certainly had a repertoire!) and none to Simon & Garfunkel--says something for good taste on the 'Cat! Ian & Sylvia defined the standard for how two voices can work together singing folk music, and it has not been improved upon. Their old stuff holds up real well.

I certainly wouldn't argue that sucking down Southern Comfort and shooting heroin with some regularity, in addition to whatever other chemical forms of feel-good enlightenment she might have been pursuing during her musical career, contributed to Janis Joplin's health and longevity. In my post I was merely passing along second hand information received from concert-goers I knew who had commented on the intensity of her performance(s). Having never seen her perform, I am not qualified to determine for myself whether the amount of energy she put into her concerts had anything to do with her untimely death.

I am left to wonder, however, had Elvis been delivering primal screams night after night or had Jerry Garcia burned his guitar and smashed his equipment at the end of a Grateful Dead concert, would they have been taken away any sooner from this earth? It's like the questions in psychology regarding whether a specific human behavior is genetically or environmentally determined: often the answer is "A Combination Of The Two." I don't think anything the Stones have done in concert, even during the "Gimme Shelter" days, compares in intensity to what was captured on tape of Janis' live performances. And certainly there are stoner musicians like Gregg Allman and J.J. Cale who can somehow continue to grind out lackluster musical performances, as well as the flip side of that coin being Death/Goth/Thrash/Heavy Metal bands who pump iron and drink carrot juice back stage so they can scream and physically abuse their instruments for the duration of their concerts. It's a rarity, however, to find a doper who can deliver a jet-fueled concert nightly for any sustained length of time.

My comment that she shaved a year off her life with each performance she gave was based on the fact that she was such an abuser, coupled with what I had heard about the intensity of her concerts. My unqualified opinion is that these two factors combined to cause her early death.

I would be interested in any artists you consider to be able to deliver such high-powered performances as Janis Joplin was able to do during her brief career. I am always on the lookout for music that pegs the goosebump meter.

Neil-- I did get to see Janis in concert (back when I was a mere child, of course) in Oklahoma City, of all places. It was right before her death. The only other live concert I saw during those days was Jimi Hendrix. Decided to stop going to concerts because I was killing off our best stars.

However, I do disagree with you about her "level of intensity" being what killed her. It was her level of substance abuse that did the deed. The remaining Rolling Stones are alive only by luck and dint of a strong constitution, otherwise, their excesses would have gotten to them, too.

I've talked to too many fabulous older performers who also gave it everything they had to believe that it's the outpouring of performance talent and energy and passion that kills folks. When I think of the enormous pool of talent and beauty that has been taken from us simply because the performers were too arrogant or screwed up or needy or dumb to limit their substance use, it just makes me angry.

(Scuse me, my soapbox is creaking. I'll step down...)

Gee, was it that obvious? *BG* Janis probably took a year off her life for every performance she gave. Sorry to say I too never got to see her in concert, but I heard second hand from others that had seen her, from the level of intensity in her performances it was evident she wouldn't be able to maintain that energy forever. So sad, like countless others around that time who left a legendary and timeless (IMO) legacy, but probably paid for it with an early demise.

Too many to list, but one comes to mind a barnstorming "I can't get started" by Roy Eldridge from one of the Jazz at the Philharmonic packages. Saw him do it at the Birmingham Town Hall and got the double LP recorded on the same tour which included it. The first few notes of Louis Armstrong on "Sleepy Time Down South" or "Black and Blue" (or most everything else). Bechet's "Petite Fleur"... too many, and I haven't mentioned blues or folk yet. Back to work, Roger,([I'm also suffering from CRS or CRAFT (Can't remember a fucking thing)disease: turned up yesterday for a meeting, moaned that no-one else turned up, got back to the office to find it was scheduled for today! Still, at least I've got all the handouts ready in time!]

Barney, by Ian & Sylvia, is a drop-it song. I play it now because someone asked for a tear-jerker; the responses are interesting. Some people are revulsed by a song about a cowboy shooting his lame horse, but they usually come around, as the meaning of the song transcends animal rights type stuff by far. Other drop-it songs: George Winston playing Spanish Fandango on the guitar; Don't Want to Die in Georgia, by Brewer and Shipley, (and most of their other stuff); I'll Fly Away: Bryan Bowers' slow plaintive version,not the quick time. Norman Blake's John Hardy, and When I Paint My Masterpiece, by anyone. If I heard ANY of these songs on the radio, I'd probably drop everything due to heart failure. Again, so many songs stop me in my tracks I pretty much limit my real time for listening to time spent in my car.

Two abiding favorites are Jennifer Warnes' "Famous Blue Raincoat" -- which I no longer have any but an elderly taped copy of (it apparently is no longer being reproduced -- big fat hairy bummer) and from which I have learned "Song of Bernadette." It's one of my favorite songs to sing, but I'm pianist-dependent for that one, since most guitarists can't just sit down and fake that one.

And Tom Waits "Small Change" album or a "Best of Tom Waits" album I've loaned and not gotten back. In fact, just about anything by Waits puts me in *such* a mood. I have to be careful or he can put so much of the divil in me I'll do something foolish...

Andres, I've always been more partial to the Dies Irae! I've only sung the Requiems of Mozart and Verdi, though - Verdi's Dies Irae really makes you feel the terror. Someday I want to get a chance to sing the Faure' Requiem, too...

I was just a child when the Pope ended the Latin mass, and I think it took away some of the reverence and ceremony for me. Now I'm no longer a Catholic at all, and I guess singing is the best way for me to commune with God (although many of my favorite songs are more earthly than spiritual).

There are always a few songs that I try not to play too often, so they will still have the "shiver down my spine" effect that wears off after too many exposures. A few of these for me:

"Harold in Italy" - Berlioz; I grew up hearing Yehudi Menuhin's recording of this, and it STILL grabs me!

I guess maybe I'm really susceptible to music - there are so many pieces that I don't just hear, but FEEL viscerally. The best music for me is that which wraps up my feelings and physical sensations and transports me elsewhere for the time it is playing. I feel lucky in that there are pieces from the classical repertoire, traditional music, rock and contemporary that make me feel that way; it is a blessing in my life to be able to hear and feel music and have it be a comfort, catharsis, escape or joy-bringer.

The Star Spangled Banner has a way of making people stand right up. Once had a co-worker who was attending his first baseball game at Anahiem Statium say, "Look at that, she sang that so well she got a standing ovation". and he meant it.
I've recently discovered Fleetwood Mac's "The Dance" and the last song on the CD is "Don't Stop" featuring the USC marching band, A total knock out.I stop what I'm doing and start boogy-ing.

LilNeo, serendipity strikes again? Moon River is one of the only *pop* songs I ever memorised, on my own on piano at about 9 or 10 yers old. I can still sit down at a piano and play the first few bars, both bass and treble!

Forgot Mozart's Requiem, esp. the Kyrie.

The carol 'In the Bleak Midwinter' is also one of my favourites, tunes by Gustav Holst or Harold Darke, and the words by Christina Rossetti. Written as a poem, it was set to music and has become one of the better known 'modern' carols. As a Pre-Raphaelite fan, it is a total joy, a word painting, that although geographically odd (midwinter in Bethlehem is neither frosty nor snowy) is so full of imagery and passion that you can forgive the stranger qualities.

Also 'It came upon a midnight clear', esp the lines 'beneath the angel strain have rolled 2000 years of wrong'. Very appropriate this year I feel... Hopefully the 'whole earth will hush their noise', and 'give back the song the angels sing'.

Rod Stewart singing 'You're in my soul', because it was "our song" for my first love and I, way back in 1978 (I was a late developer on the boyfriend front), and seems even more appropriate now that he is no longer here, especially the line 'you're ageless, timeless', sorry, must go and have a little sniffle.....

For other kinds of music, as previously mentioned somewhere, 'Jesu, joy of man's desiring' will have me dropping everything, in an effort to get away from the wretched noise - well you try singing it three times at three seperate weddings on the same day! Besides, it goes much better as a triple jig.....
