Subject: Scottish Clubs in June?
From: GUEST,guest Ed SIlberman
Date: 14 Jan 14 - 02:37 PM

Im planning a trip to Scotland in June and hope to take in a folk club or two. My interest is more in traditional song than singer-songwriters or world music. And a good ol' sing-around or a tunes session would make me happier than a show. Looking at Edinburgh, Inverness, Portree, June 10 thru 15, give or take. Appreciate all leads. You can write to directly if you'd rather: ensilberman@aol.com

The TMSA Keith festival might fit your interests, though maybe not your itinerary if you want to be in Skye at the same time.

It's been some years since I've been to the British Isles. But when I was there, I found that the a good way to find traditional music was to ask at the front desk of a hotel. The tourist office for the town you are in is another likely source.

We are planning a trip in June ourselves and are amazed to discover that not even festivals have info on the net about their 2014 events.

If you're passing through Falkirk it has an excellent club every Thursday night starting at 8.30pm.

a good way to find traditional music was to ask at the front desk of a hotel.

That might work in Portree or Melrose but not in a city.

The tourist office for the town you are in is another likely source.

Not likely at all in a big place. They'll just point you at commercially promoted concerts and say "sorry you're too early for T in the Park".

Music shops are usually a good bet. Any place with mandolins in the window is likely to know what people do with them.

I wrote something very similar, Jack- but the post got lost :(

In which part of 'The British Isles' did this work for you, leeneia? Try it anywhere in England- except perhaps in the North-East- and they won't have a clue what you're talking about.

I'd suggest The Wally Dug in Edinburgh, Ed- but it's the first Sunday of the month.

No doubt more people with ideas will be along shortly :)

Well done, FreddyHeadey for such a comprehensive list for 2018.
The OP was in 2014, and had the pleasure of meeting Ed at a couple of sessions in Edinburgh During 2014: another "power to your elbow" for Mudcat!

Newcastleton is smaller than it used to be but the people who run it know what they're doing.

If you camp by the river, make sure your tent is midgeproof and load up with industrial quantities of repellent.

One I hadn't heard of before and only just found out about: Newton Stewart & Minnigaff, 6-8 July. Can't find a website about it that works on my phone but might be worth looking into if you're going to be in the southwest.

I read Jack's mention of Newton Stewart, and it was the first I'd heard of it. Then I went out to the shops. Standing in the queue at Wilko's, the next bloke looked at me and said "Aren't you the saxophone player ? Where did I see you, was it Newton Stewart ?". (To which I replied "That's right, clarinet, never been there, Newcastleton ?". We agreed on Moniaive). He seemed to have a good opinion of Newton Stewart, anyway. The website has a few pubs that claim to welcome musicians (I'm a session animal). I might go & have a look ...

I agree with the comments about Newcastleton - not as much energy in the sessions as there used to be, watch out for the midges, but can still be nice. I think there's been new blood on the committee for the last few years, making a bit of a difference. Good weather helps.

Thanks for the list, Freddy.

Try the Edinburgh Session Hub on Facebook.

There's a new monthly session at the George and Abbotsford in Melrose, 3-6pm last (or 4th?) Sunday of the month - next one tomorrow.

The scotlandsmusic site seems to be about ten years out of date. The Tass in Edinburgh changed its name about then and the Clutha in Glasgow was obliterated by a falling helicopter.

The scottish-folk-music.com site is better, but still depends on those in the clubs and sessions submitting updated info to the administrator of the site to keep it up-to-date.

However, there is now an absolute plethora of Facebook sites on which people advertise their gigs, sessions (see the same gig ad 10 times in one day?) etc. Just do a search on "groups" in Facebook, nominating folk music as your interest and you'll be deluged with potential groups and pages to join! Here are a few for starters:
Scottish Folk Music
What the Folk's Up
Houseconcerts in Scotland
Fiddles in Scotland
And most folk clubs have their own FB groups now.

Maintaining an accurate and comprehensive list is more work than anyone has time to do, even when they're getting paid for it.

Like it or loathe it, Facebook IS a very effective way of transmitting info re gigs and sessions. And some clubs have taken to "live streaming" of guest nights, which is also done via the Facebook platform.

It's easy to get dragged in but Facebook can be quite good, I agree.
The search isn't bad if people have used the 'right' words in their post.
I couldn't find "What the Folk's Up" though TB.

Last Sunday's Melrose session didn't happen. There's a trad session in the Cloudhouse Cafe in Stow on the first Sunday of each month, 3pm to 6pm - mix of tunes and songs. Stow is both on the Borders Railway and the X95 bus route, easy to get to by public transport from Edinburgh, Midlothian or the central Borders.
