The Longford Weaver always sounds like The Calton Weaver to me. Perhaps a song that cropped up everywhere in local versions.

ah yes followed that a bit better since I am aware of the tune 'The Longford Collector'

The problem with the Longford Weaver is that it probably has nothing to do with Longford at all. According the master himself Andy Irvine "Longford Town is probably a corruption of Long Cookstown.

The only other songs I can think of right now that refer to Longford are "My native town Drumlish" and "Where the three counties meet".

As Big Al implies, Colum was not primarily a song collector. His one book of songs can be read/downloaded from archive.org

The Longford Collector is atune that The Dubliners used to segue from The Donegal Reel.

Padraic Colum was the bloke who wrote the words to She Moved through the Fair.

PC was a Longford man - who incidentally collected folksongs .

Two separate things. I didn't mean to confuse anyone. I thought you'd follow what I was saying.

does anybody know if he is still alive or where the music/songs he collected might be....ITMA? UCD? Comhaltas?

Tom Munnelly made a collecting trip to Longford/Westmeath in 1972 - I heard a talk about it last year (Frank Harte Festival? Spanish Point festival? Not sure...). It is likely that the second recording is from that visit.

Brilliant, I Just had a look at the search results for Longford in the Rould Folksong Index.

There was a Patrick Green recorded in 1947 by the BBC perhaps
and a Big Jim McInerney recorded in 1972 by Tom Munnelly.

Does anybody out there have more info or any leads on either of these two singers?

Try the Roud Folksong Index, which returns 12 results for songs collected in Co. Longford. The first couple are versions of songs collected widely elsewhere (Green Broom, Green Grow the Rushes, Let no man steal your thyme), but interestingly of those 12 results, 5 of them appear completely unique to Longford (or at least, there are no other records in the index).

Those songs are:
Lovely Mary O; Paddy Maguire; The Door it was Left Down; The Schoolmaster and the Labourer; and Innocent Darby Dane

Hello, Guest. I think you are referring to County Longford in Ireland, correct? I'm sure someone with helpful information will be along- Mudcat members and guests are from all over the world, so you may have results quickly or it may take longer.

If you go up to the Lyrics & Knowledge Seach box (~ top left ...) and type Longford into thre Search box ... say for the forum ... and then, separately, for the D(igital) T(radition) you will get hits ( and, at least several sets of words ... and names ...for many songs already discussed over the years.
