a recording by Tom Paxton https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQvc6S674hE

another, this time of a live performancehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJVkiz4gXw4

and as sung by Roy Bailey (more dramtically, I think) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H5wCy3v3Xyg

There are many recordings of a hymn called "how beautiful upon the mountains" with lines such as "How beautiful upon the mountains that bringeth glad tidings, that publisheth peace."

Joe: I agree; it's "plants", not "plans."

1. It sounds like "plants."
2. "Plants" makes more sense as something protesters would march around.
3. "Plants" rhymes with "chance" better than "plans" does.

I'm thinking there's a mistake above in the second verse. I can't hear a difference either way, but logic tells me people would be walking around missile plants. Opinions?
Marching 'round the White House, marching 'round the Pentagon,

Marching round the mighty missile plans plants,

Speaking truth to power, singing "Peace in Babylon,

Asking us "Why not give peace a chance?"

They shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore.
Isaiah

Inscribed on the wall of the United Nations garden, New York

A bronze sculpture by Evgeniy Vuchetich titled "Let Us Beat Swords into Plowshares" was presented by the then Soviet Union in 1959.

It is indeed a quote from Isaiah, Chapter 52, Verse 7 - the part of Isaiah known as the Book of Consolation, or the Book of Comfort, written during the captivity in Babylon.
    How beautiful upon the mountains
are the feet of the messenger who announces peace (NRSV, Isaiah 52:7)

Very topical.

Of course (Like Shakespeare) the Bible has quotes for most purposes:
"Beat your ploughshares into swords, and your pruning-hooks into spears"

Cheers
Nigel :)

Dang it! I thought with all those dashes, I had the chords lined up to show correctly, but nope.

Here's where they go:

How bea(D)utif(G)ul upon the mo(D)untain are the ste((G)ps of those who walk in pe(A7)ace.

How bea(D)utif(G)ul upon the mo(D)untain are the st(G)eps of tho(A7)se who walk in pe(D)ace.

Acr(D)oss the bridge at Selma you came ma( G)rching side by si(D)de,
In your eyes a n(G)ew world on the w(A7)ay.
Ho(D)pe was in your heart and justice wo(G)uld not be den(D)ed.
You sang "We shall o(G)vercome some d(A7)ay."

Go(G)d knows the courage you posse(D)ssed, and Isa(G)iah said it be(A7)st:

How Beautiful Upon The Mountain
(Tom Paxton)

Chorus:
---- D -- G ---------- D ------------ G -------------------- A7
How beautiful upon the mountain are the steps of those who walk in peace.

---- D -- G ---------- D ------------ G ---- A7-------------- D
How beautiful upon the mountain are the steps of those who walk in peace.

D -----------------------------   G ------------ D
Across the bridge at Selma you came marching side by side,
------------ G ------------ A7

In your eyes a new world on the way.
D ---------------------------   G ----------- D
Hope was in your heart and justice would not be denied.
---------------- G ----------- A7

You sang "We shall overcome some day."

---------------------------- G ------- D -------- G ----- A7

God knows the courage you possessed, and Isaiah said it best:

(Chorus)

Marching 'round the White House, marching 'round the Pentagon,

Marching round the mighty missile plans,

Speaking truth to power, singing "Peace in Babylon,

Asking us "Why not give peace a chance?"

God knows the courage you possessed, and Isaiah said it best:

(Chorus)

Now the generations who have joined you on this road

Look to you with power in their eyes.

Now you know the torch has passed as they pick up the load.

Now you see their eyes are on the prize.

God knows the courage they possess, and Isaiah said it best:

(Chorus)
