Tom Paley

Tom Born and raised in New York City, Tom Paley fell in love, long ago, with traditional folk-music. He began playing guitar and 5-string banjo and was soon well-known for hisinstrumental skill.

For a time, he performed in a duo with Woody Guthrie. Later, with Mike Seeger and John Cohen, he formed THE NEW LOST CITY RAMBLERS, the group that generated a great wave of interest in the traditional string band music of the rural South.
After the breakup of the original NLCR, he formed the short-lived OLD RELIABLE STRING BAND (together with Roy Berkeley and Artie Rose) and then moved to Sweden, residing there for three years (1963-65) before moving to England, where he has lived ever since, touring often in America, the UK, Scandinavia and other parts of Europe, both solo and with other musicians.

In England, he worked together, from about 1966, with Joe Locker and a series of fiddlers as the NEW DEAL STRING BAND. The NDSB was temporarily laid on the shelf in the late ?70s but has been revived in recent years with Tom's son, Ben, joining Tom and Joe as principal fiddler (though, in 1975, after many years on guitar and banjo, Tom took up fiddle, as well, so the NDSB now has two fiddlers).

Tom is returning to the Goose for the second time. We had to turn people away last time.

Reuben's Train

Reuben's Train are a duo performing mostly American songs, some traditional and some not so traditional, from the darker side of life. Feel free to stumble around our shadowy site. You may come across the occasional faint glimmer of hope - this is entirely unintentional.

They have been performing together for the last 15 years. After a nerve-racking first performance at the truly wonderful Sharp's Folk Club, they began to realise that audiences were having a hard time working out quite how to react, with one half laughing and the other half telling them to be quiet. They've never looked back.

The Wayne Drury Project

US singer-songwriter Wayne Drury generated a dedicated following in the state of Oregon in the early 70s, performing his own unique take on acoustic folk/alt country developing at the time.

His continuing battle with MS made playing and singing progressively more difficult until the late 70s when it came to a complete halt. His reputation stalled, but his creative output continued even though the songs were unheard. Until now. His later work is arguably his best. He is currently bedridden in a care facility in Oregon.

His 70s music partner Rob Anderson has put this project together and gathered around him a host of incredible players to perform Wayne's' songs.

Hey Nyge

On the off-chance you and Sue feel like making a real Ivy House week of it, Pepe Belmonte (know his stuff?) and I are both playing at the Ivy tomorrow night (ie Thursday 27th), the night before Tom...
