Had a great night last night at the 50th birthday of Grimsby Folk Club. Lots of photos of past events...me with a big black beard and lots of hair! The music was great too... spots from all our current regulars with the addition of founder members John Conolly and Bill Meek and to round it all off a stunning performance from guests John Tams and Barry Coope.
oh...and there was a magnificent cake too!

Congratulations Grimsby club. I have many great memories of singing there over the years, of the Broadside, and Stan & Kath, and of former member Pete Sumner who got me a booking at the folk club in Bermuda. 50 years equals my involvement in the folk revival, and I know there are other clubs of a similar vintage, or near to it, which goes to show that this folk thing goes wider and deeper than some give it credit for. Thank goodness for pioneers like the folk from Grimsby (and Clethorpes)long may they reign. RoyH.

As a displaced Meggie I would like to congratulate the GFC on it's longevity and wish it (them?) continued success.

It's great to hear that the 50th went so well, and I'm sorry that I couldn't get up there for it.

I attended Gy F.C. for many years in the late 60's and then, as part of Lindsey, helped to run the rival - Royal Oak Folk Club through the 70's and early 80's.

It was always friendly rivalry and we had many good years. But in the end Grimsby FC is the one that's still going strong and I'm sure that the club has a long and exciting future ahead.

Well done to everyone involved.

Best wishes

K/van

First club I ever went to (64 -69)but just as a young member of the audience. John and Bill, The Meggies etc taught me all of the songs and choruses that I still sing today. Saw some wonderful guests too ranging across many styles since it seemed that there was no house booking policy to rule out anything.

Thanks guys

R

I first went to The Queens in 1965. We had some brilliant times - a young-looking 16 year old could get served with Tetley's Bitter! Is there any record of the guests in those early days. I bet it would make good reading.

I also attended back in the late sixties. The Meggies transformed into the more famous Broadside. The group with which John and Bill premiered some of their more famous songs.
