Subject: Lyr Req: Guns of Navarone (Movie '61) Title Song From: Mrrzy Date: 30 Jan 14 - 02:58 PM Hey, just saw this movie again, great movie, and I was looking forward to hearing the title song, as I know it in French, but apparently it never appears in the movie? I mean, there is the music, but no words? And yes I've looked through Google and IMDB first, thanks all. I can post most of the French lyrics if anyone wants them, but was hoping the English would tell me the bits I'm missing... And there are songs on the Internet *called* the Guns of Navarone, or just Navarone (as the French version is titled) that aren't it. The one I'm looking for is a martial, warmongering song. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Guns of Navarone (Movie '61) Title Song From: Mrrzy Date: 30 Jan 14 - 05:01 PM Thanks! Hard to transcribe... and when do they play it in the movie? Or is it only *about* the movie, do you or anyone else know? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Guns of Navarone (Movie '61) Title Song From: Mrrzy Date: 30 Jan 14 - 05:05 PM aHA! Search on "theme song" instead of "title song" et voilA! Should I post as Lyrics Add? I got both the English and the French now - the English one tells the story of the movie, the French one is just martial and general in tone. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Guns of Navarone (Movie '61) Title Song From: Gibb Sahib Date: 30 Jan 14 - 07:48 PM A heads up: The instrumental theme song from Guns of Navarone, rendered by The Skatalites (a rather short-lived aggregation of Jamaican studio musicians) was a *very* popular recording in the ska era/genre. That is, a very popular *dance* number, both ca. 1964/5 when it was released and later during ska "revivals" (1970s, 80s, 90s). I and my peers danced to it a lot in the 1990s. There was even a "sequel" to it, "Force 10 from Navarone" or something like that. So I imagine, though I've not checked, Google searches nowadays will turn up The Skatalites' rendition (which is not necessarily what you want!). |

But as I was trying to remember it, a fragment of what I believe is the Navarone theme song (don't have the energy to chase it down on YouTube) popped into my head, and that DID have words, but I can only grab fleeting impressions of them... if I've even got the right melody. Something about "islands of Greece"...? It was (gawd) fifty years ago, and was probably on one of those your-favourite-movie-themes LPs, where someone often added words to a film tune after the fact so singers could cover it. Islands of Greece are dark and beautiful...? Oh THANKYEW. Just what I needed at five past one in the morning when I'm trying to get my brain to calm down... |
