Subject: FOLK near Croydon???????????
From: Richard Bridge

I am socialising with romantic intent with a young woman who lives near Croydon. We've been to the Wednesday club - where I was the ONLY person not playing Americana or ARSS. I thought about the Sunday club http://www.folkandblues.org/ - and that too appears to be 100% Americana and ARSS.

Is there a folk club or folkk sinaground etc anywhere near Croydon?

Please?

(1) not accepting their cookies to use their website - not least because
(2) surely it was that side that had a BNP member, and refused to expel him for bringing the morris into disrepute
(3) he was a known techie likely to have been involved in the BNP trolling of members of this site.

Croydon Folk Club is certainly traditional folk orientated. Monday nights at Ruskin House: Croydon

They ask you to phone beforehand to book a floor spot on guest nights, and encourage you to try a spot on a singers & musicians night first (Or be able to direct them to some excellent videos on YouTube!).

We've been to the Wednesday club
I tried Googling and the only thing I could find was this thread. Any more details for Americana fans?

I've met one of the Wild Hunt people, an attractive young woman entirely lacking in Nazi tattoos. So I suspect the media has manufactured a story here.

There is another Morris side in Croydon which seems to be a hardcore men-with-beards-only Morris Ring outfit. Maybe you're thinking of that?

Croydon Folksong Club is the best club for miles and has been going for over 50 years! Accept no imitations!

Best wishes,

Peter

Maybe, but your website doesn't do much to help:

http://www.croydonfolksongclub.org.uk/

Apart from being very badly written, it provides no information about where or when you meet, or who/what's going to be on.

Well, I don't know where you dredged that site up from! I've never seen it before! And it's not *my* club, by the way.

This is the url I have www.croydonfolkclub.org.uk

Note no use of the word song.

Best wishes,

Peter

Waddon Pete, I got that link from YOU, as you're the one who mentioned Croydon Folksong Club specifically. I'd never heard of it before and would never have thought of looking for it without your post.

Croydon Folk Club was originally named Croydon Folksong Club - not sure when it changed. The site Jack found is truly bizarre!

Anything happening in Coulsdon, by the way? Just idle curiosity - I grew up there.

(I've got folk roots there, thinking about it - saw Steeleye in Croydon, saw a local trio in Coulsdon who inspired me to buy my own bongoes, learned Who's the Fool Now? from a friend of a friend. Then got into punk and forgot about folk for 25 years. No connections there any longer, either - I just well up slightly as the train passes Coulsdon South Station on its way to Brighton. And I only go to Brighton these days to visit my parents' grave. Getting older's a bugger, isn't it?)

If you're talking about the Lime Meadow one, I was not asked for any membership of anything.

Regret to say I know nothing about Coulsdon.

There's nothing in Coulsdon, there's not even any pubs !
I think there was a pub in Purley that used to have an Open Mic every Weds evening ? But I much prefer driving on, to go the Model Railway Society club nights these days.... :-)

No pubs? Has the Tudor Rose gone? There was at least one pub down in Coulsdon proper, too. I'm going back a few decades, admittedly.

You'll be telling me next the Railway Hotel Purley has closed. (But please don't.)

Phew - there's still a Tudor Rose. Nothing between Chipstead Valley Road and Purley, though. But then, maybe that's why we used to go to the Railway.

yes, but that is not a club is it? Folk clubs give the people a chance to perform and improve without any pop hype, what is happening at the moment is the at certain folk acts are being hyped and promoted, using the techniques of the commercial pop world, the criteria is not necessarily musical merit, but whether a product is commercially saleable, this music used to be and should still be the music of all the people, that gave performers a chance to develop and improve.

The Lime Meadow Acoustic Folk & Blues Club is not limited to just TMWA members. The music styles can be an eclectic mix of folk through to blues, depending on who turns up on the night.
All are welcome to either listen or play music. Starting now at 8.30pm until 11pm on Wednesdays fortnightly, so check before coming. There is no membership or entry fee though a pot is passed around for donations on the night. Next meeting is the 19th February 2014 fortnightly thereafter and a Special Guest evening on the 26th March 2014 with the May Birds and Rosewood & Steel plus floor singers (£2 entry on that night)

The Lime Meadow Acoustic Folk & Blues Club is not limited to just TMWA members.

I was wondering vaguely what TMWA stood for (Traditional Music... er...?) so I googled. Turns out I could join it if I wanted to. It was the OMWA (Old Men With Axes) in my day, mind you.

hmmm, I must get out a bit more ...
I know that every other Tuesday night, the Sutton folkies hold a session at The Feathers pub in Merstham. It also happens to be 'All ales at £2.55 a pint' every Tuesday ! They often have Hobgoblin, too :-) . That is not far from me .
