The Doughboys Cajun band AKA Ock 'n Dough Ceilidh Band would know about these things.
Ock 'n Dough website when they come to Gloucester Cajun they always give us a Latvian dance or two.

I think you mean this:

Tur Man Muzam Neapnika

(reached after a bit of blind blundering around in websites in Latvian, Estonian and probably Lithuanian as well).

Have a listen to the tracks on this Latvian folk music album, really impressive musicianship and singing.

Makes me proud to be half Latvian. :)

Thanks.

I actually managed to locate it when I recalled the title was "Beyond the River"

I think it's EMI Hemisphere.

Located one on ebay.

But thanks for the contact.

It seems likely that whatever CD of folk music you may recall was likely to have been produced by the UPE recording company. They are quoted as saying, "Before UPE began, there was hardly any Latvian traditional music on CD, and none on a Latvian label. What had appeared on vinyl or cassette before 1991's independence bore the heavy stamp of Soviet approval, and after it Latvian musicians struggled financially to release anything at all." You can find their catalog here.

Some years ago, I came by a CD of Latvian "post-folklore" folk music called something like "The Far Side of the River". It featured a selection of different bands and was, to be blunt, bloody superb.

Sadly, it disappeared. Can't find any mention of it on Google so I wonder if I have the title wrong.

Has anyone any knowledge about such a cd?
