When I first learned the song performed by the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, I think on the Spontaneous Concert album with Pete Seeger whom I remember so fondly, The Old Orange Flute, I was unfamiliar with the anti-Papist songs the title flute kept playing after its owner converted to Catholicism - but I could hear the lyrics fairly well, I thought.

However, in looking up some lyrics ... I have just lately become aware that the song I thought was called "Boil Water!" that it freely would sound / when one papish squeak in it couldn't be found, was actually called BOYNE Water, and it isn't about contraception, it is about history.

So I would like to hear the song I imagined for the last 50 years! Can anybody write a funny song, set back in the 50's Irish folk music style or earlier, about having too many children? The one I imagined always went through a verse about Sean, who was born 8 and a half months after the wedding, an 8-pound preemie; Molly, who was born 9 months later after pulling out; Seamus 10 months later(rhythm method); the twins a year later after trying abstinence... maybe to the tune of Sweet Betsy from Pike/ that greyhound song / etc ...but that was my mind's ear...

Also, any other mondegreens worth writing songs about? Has anybody written where Kiss This Guy or Bathroom on the Right or Lady Mondegreen makes sense in the context of the other song?

One song already in existence, nothing to do with boiling water but totally on the theme of too many children in rapid succession, is Brigid and the Pill.

I could put Weigh Hey into a Roland song...

But I like the cross-eyed bear who got laid on the green! Maybe that's where all those kids came from!

Me Uncle Mick, he had a big stick,
And he took it to the slaughter,
And he killed ten thousand Orangemen
At the Battle of the Boilin' Water.

That's a song that was sung by my father and by his father before him, and by his father too back in the time they were hanging men and women there, for the wearin' of the mondegreen.

(to an obvious tune) (and please to be improved upon, some of my rhymes suck)

When I was young, I had no sense
But went to church with me old parents
And the only thing the priests would say
Was keep it in your pants till your wedding day
So early in the morning, so early in the morning, so early in the morning, I'd ease my wood away.
And then one night at a pattern dance
I was getting tight and so were my pants
And it wasn't all for the sweet potcheen
But for Brigit Byrne, such a fair colleen
So early in the morning...
Sure I courted her from the west and east
Till our parents wept at our wedding feast
And in 8 short months, little Sean was born
A bouncing preemie of near a stone
So early...
Then we heard a way she could take a rest
For the women said, just give him the breast
And your body knows that you've got one babe
And won't start the next, so your looks you'll save
And early...
Now a year has passed, and our little lass
2-month sister Nellie and Sean sleep fast
And me Brigit dear asked me if I could please
Make a mess instead of the babe disease
And early...
So a year went by till the baby came
And we named her after the lovely dame
Who taught Brigit dear how to take her temp
So a break she'd have from the baby bemp
And early...
When young Sean turned 4, to his parents' door
Came the parish priest whom they'd seen before
For to baptise both of his sisters fair
And the brand-new red-headed Alasdair.
So early...
All me tin was spent, and her beaty went
So we tried a plan that was surely bent
Someone lent us secret pornography
To help keep us both otherwise busy
And early...
At the birthday bash for our little 'Dair
Me poor Brigit darlin had quite the air
Of an airship, sure, or a flukin' whale
Though the twins' due date wasn't yet in hail
Yet early...
So take heed all people of any creed
If your leaders tell you when you can breed
Tell them all to take a very long hike
Off a shortened pier right above a spike
And early...

How's that?

Boil water, cry the women
Boil water, cry the women
Boil water, cry the women
It keeps you out' my way.
