Subject: Music workshops, summer schools/residentials UK

I am looking at taking some time out this year to sign up for some workshops for fiddle/voice/banjo, maybe other stuff too if there are some available with various options. Does anyone know of any of these taking place not too far away from where I am (Yorkshire). Summer school or a weekend residential might be an option too. thanks Jane

Sore Fingers Summer School, Kingham School, Just by Stow on the Wold, I think its second week in april. They do guitar, mandolin, banjo, singing, fiddle, dobro, its week long and well worth the trip.

Yorkshire Dales Workshops' website still exists, with some links that might be useful, but unfortunately the organisation itself has been wound up.

Folkworks Summer School in Durham - 11 - 16 August 2014

Fabulous week. I went for a few years. It is a bit pricey but worth it if you can find the money. I stopped going because funds got a bit tight.

Benslow music in Essex do some folk - more classical- but nice accomodation and food. Its a big old house registered as a charity to promote live music.

I agree with Tootler; Folkworks is great. Unfortunately it is the week before Whitby and I can't do both.

Folkworks sounds great but too pricey for my budget! Sore Fingers do one in October which is a weekend one, thats more like what I'm looking for I think.

Halsway Manor would be the first place that I would check.

Wasn't the original request for somewhere 'not too far away from' Yorkshire?

Halsway Manor looks quite tempting actually.. they do day visitor workshops as well as weekend residentials etc. I didn't know the place existed, cheers for that Guest.

"The English Country Music Weekend in Winster, Derbyshire? "
Not what the OP was asking for, there is no instructional element in the ECMW.

ECMW's Facebook page says "There is also a full programme of talks and presentations on specialist related subjects", which may fit people's concept of "instruction".

(You don't need to be a Facebook member to read that, well done whoever set it up).

A friend has told me about The Burwell Bash, somewhere in the Cambridge direction. Last week in July, residential summer school, with a variety of instruments covered. They give priority booking to previous attenders then open it up to others: it was opened to others as of last Friday!. Too late for blue clickies, just Google Burwell Bash!

Probably the least expensive do is to join the caravan and camping club and go to the folk easter meet. There are things to do all day and evening including workshops - the mix depends on who offers to do what - and dances with a scratch band every evening.

If you have to buy a camper van first, it doesn't work out that cheap.

Does the Camping Club still do an Easter Folk Camp ? Used to go to Blockley in the late sixties - Ron Shuttleworth ran the 'song' side of things ! Great Fun !
