When he wasn't blatantly stealing other peoples songs , Fred wrote some good stuff himself , and was a VERY good entertainer .

Subject: Lyr Add: SUPERMAN (Fred Wedlock)
From: Jim Dixon
Date: 18 Feb 14 - 08:45 AM

I copied these lyrics from here (where they also have chords), and checked them against the recording at YouTube, here, and reformatted them to fit my own aesthetic taste (mainly putting the rhymes at ends of lines):

SUPERMAN
As sung by Fred Wedlock

1. I'd like to think I was Superman,
Giving all the world a hand.
Oh, what a Superman
I'd be!
I'd like to think I was invisible.
I'd be invincible.
Invinci-visible,
That's me.

CHORUS: Ah, but I'm very
Un-extraordinary,
And I'll never be any of the things I dream about
When I'm alone and lights are out.
I'm just me.

2. I'd like to be Mr Universe,
Defeating all the worst
People in the universe
For free.
I'd like to be a multimillionaire,
Giving money everywhere,
Saving a place up there
For me.

CHORUS

[Repeat verse 1 and chorus.]

Yep, I've just played it. It was sitting on my hard drive! Thanks to all.
Back in the '70s Bristol had a really hot folk scene. The last time I saw Fred Wedlock was at the Bristol Wine Fair, he and his wife were trying to get drunk on the free tasters that were included with the entry price.
I remember playing in folk clubs all over the area. The Stonehouse, The Bristol Flyer, there was one down on the docks - a real traditional club who didn't much like my stuff - and another in Downend. A bloke named Reg who lived (IIRC) in Midsummer Norton ran several including one in a cellar in Bath. He also hosted a show on Local Bristol TV - Graham and I (we were known as Cacofonix) were on when the plug was pulled on the last night.

Fred Wedlock! Why didn't I think of Fred? I knew him well when I lived in Bristol too. What a berk - me not Fred!
I heard of his death, but was unable to attend the funeral as we were living in Germany.

Folkish and poignant. I thought it might have been an early Al Stewart, Steve Adams or Richard Digance but so far I've found nothing.

What I remember is:

I wish I were Superman,
...
...
What a super man I'd be,
...
But I'm just me,
Only me.

LOL, sorry about that. They ARE the last two lines, LOL.

That said, I'm coming up empty. Do you recall the song type as in was it folkish, countryish, rappish, etc?

Unfortunately, the songs listed on this page are sorted by author rather than title, but I would bet the song you seek is among them. It even has the Brothers Four song with the first line, "Paint me up in crazy colors so I look like Superman." Also, the site does not appear to have the complete lyrics of any of the songs, but merely the first line. However, this may serve to point you in the right direction.

I remember this song but only the first line (as above) and the last couple:
But I'm just me,
Only me.
