Subject: Tech: Speech to text tablet? From: Jack the Sailor Date: 19 Feb 14 - 04:54 PM Anyone have any experience with android speech to text apps? Kindle? Windows tablets? Looking for reasonable cost, good function and a file system that allows large text files to be transferred back and forth to a laptop or Mac. Good function for FB, including games, Mudcat and Gmail would also be required. |

From: JohnInKansas Date: 20 Feb 14 - 06:34 PM While there are others who may have something more appropriate for your use, the "big gun" in speech recognition is probably an outfit called Nuance. They're the ones who push (Google link) "Dragon Naturally Speaking." Their list price for the desktop/laptop programs are about what you indicated for Jelly bean, but an inquiry to find out if they have something specifically applicable to your use sould give you an entry for their email lists, and is likely to get advertisements for "special offers" at significantly lower prices. (In other words they know their stuff isn't worth list price, but they do sell it cheaper?) I get about 3 "special offers" per week at 30% to 50% discounts just from having a scanner that came with their pdf maker, and about that many for Dragon. They advertise Windows and Mac versions, but you'll have to check out suitability for tablets and such. Note that I haven't bought or used Dragon, so I can't claim to know how good it might be; but others here claim it works pretty well. Their "PDF Converter" has worked well for me, but that's sort of a different animal in another zoo. John |
