But I'm kind of amazed that you have some--is it sold there? Or did someone bring it to you special? Cause there is one thing that separates Creemore from all the other fine micro-, mini- and designer-brewery products. (Designer beers are fancy-label, small quantity beers actually produced by major breweries--say no more). They make a fine lager, and INSIST ON IT BEING SOLD FRESH. They allegedly go to every retailer and pub that carries their product, once a week, remove any unsold stock, and replace it with fresh. That's why it sells for $2.65/500 ml bottle in the LCBO, and why it's worth it. Fresh beer is so much better!"

13 years ago! Such a thread! I have to say (for those who don't read all of old threads) that I STILL think Dogfish Head is one of the best breweries in the world. They try anything, and you would not like everything they make, but their 'standard' stuff is A+, and you would find something to suit you.

I suppose I have added 200-300 types of beer tasted since this thread started... and thanks to Edmund & Charmion in Canada, I finally tasted a lager that is actually GOOD! if you get a chance, try Creemore Springs lager!

The saddest thing is that I chose LONDON PRIDE because it was the name of my favourite Morris Tune (AKA Idbury Hill) & now it's my beer of choice.

If you're in South-Eastern New England, look out for Newport Storm. A fine hoppy brew with a nice bite. Much more so than Sam Adams.

So many good beers and ales are gone, the Dawson's Ale from New Bedford, the Black Horse from -- wherever it came from, New Jersey? -- the real Ballantine's Ale from New York or Cranston ... and though I haven't been to that part of the country in years, they tell me Ranier Ale is no more ... sigh ... But we have our new microbrews. And Schaeffer (!) is still made, though in Texas, not New York, and still excellent for quenching a simple thirst on a hot day. ("When you're having more than one ...")

My son used to run a pub in Buckingham and was the only licensee in the town to get a cask mark from CAMRA (The Campaign For Real Ale). Up to that time I had been a white wine drinker and then virtually teetotal for a few years.

A friend had told me about the merits of Spitfire beer and, when Andy had it in as a guest ale I tried it and was converted. It really is a wonderful beer. Since then I tend to try different beers at the pubs I go to for folk sessions and have found quite a few good beers. I have had Guiness, but, having tasted it in England and Ireland will only drink the Irish variation which is much creamier and has altogether a better taste than the English. I've found that draught beer definitely has the edge on bottled and you really need to find a landlord who looks after his beers properly - it does make a difference!

Addendum to my post above:

Though I don't drink the real stuff anymore, I do occasionally drink a non-alcoholic brew. I actually have more of a sense of preference when it comes to NA's than I did with regular beer. Hell, I didn't care what regular beer tasted like as long as it worked. Since NA's don't work there's no reason to drink them if they don't taste good.

Of those that I've tried, Buckler from the Heineken folks is my favorite with St. Pauli Girl NA running a close second. Guinness's Kaliber is overpriced swill. O'Doul's from Anheuser-Busch is surprisingly good with a slightly Beck's-like flavor that none of A-B's regular beers have. For those who prefer the flavor of a typical American beer, Coors NA is almost indistinguishable from their regular swill except that it won't get a fly high.

As always, YMMV.

   As a fellow Badger, I have to agree with your choice of Leinie's (although I prefer the Honey Weiss). I got a bad taste for Point after a party a long time ago, and have never been able shake the sense of impending gastric disaster when I try to get it past my tongue.

I also am quite fond of New Glarus Spotted Cow and Capital Dark (both being local brews and readily available in most of the local taverns).

Most people have better taste than I do. I'm happy lately drinking a basic, cheap lager. Here in Wisconsin, Point Special or Leinenkugel Original fall into this category. On tap or in a bottle works for me.

It's been over thirteen years since I've had a beer or anything else alcoholic. I can tell you that when I did drink my favorite was whatever came in a can, bottle or on tap - domestic or imported - light, dark or in between - expensive gourmet brew or mass-produced cheap swill. I never met a beer I didn't like.   

The only times that I cared what kind of beer I drank was when eating ethnic food. I always ordered Dos Equis with Mexican food, Kirin with Japanese food, Singha with Thai food etc. They seemed to compliment the flavors of the food. One thing I could never find, though, was a beer that tasted good with pizza. I know beer and pizza is supposed to be some king of a tradition, but I never liked it. The flavor of pizza is so overpowering that it made the beer taste funny. So, I just drank the beer and didn't eat the pizza.

Micca--- I live about 12 miles from the Glenmorangie distillery, but can't develop a taste for it at all. About 15 miles in the other direction [Brora] is the home of my favourite Clynelish, pronounced kline-leesh, I'll bring you some when next we have a Mudcat meet. Winter Warmer however is totally different, recipe as follows.
4 parts strong dark rum [Woods}
2 parts Crabbies ginger wine
1 part Roses lime juice
Now that's a winter warmer.

Cletus--- Surely Absinthe makes the fart grow Honda in Paw's case, as it is said to sound like a large motor cycle from a distance, which is the best place to be, I hear!!

Beers, ah yes this thread was about beers, well Gales HSB is my favourite, followed by Courage Directors Bitter,Young's Best,Chimay, and Pilsner Urquell.

Couldn't find any reference to New Zealand beers, so thought I'd better contribute. Current favourite is 'Speights Old Dark'. It's the only dark ale we have on tap. The only problem is they keep it chilled to the same temperature as the lagers. Aaarghhh.. I have to train new bar staff to give my pint a quick 'nuke' in the microwave to make it drinkable. It's brewed by Speights Brewery in Dunedin NZ.

Like the rest of the world, NZ went from one or more breweries in each town, in the 50's down to about six for the whole country in the 80's. Fortunately things have improved. Here's a current NZ brewery list

Mumble, mumble, this thread has got me thinking about brews, and pubs I have known. Must start a new thread!

Dunno if this one has been mentioned yet, but...

Traquier Ale. But good luck finding the stuff. I paid $20.00 for a bottle 20 years ago, and the thing was numbered.

However...for accesible beers, Mackesons triple stout. I am still a devotee of Guinness, but there is something about a stout that does not allow light to pass through it that enchants me.

I hold a Petes Wicked Stout up to a pub light, and I see the light, it's fixture, and likely the picture on the wall next to it.

I hold up a Guinness, and I see a warm red dot of light.

I hold up a Mackesons, and there's nothing. Pitch black, and nothing esle...and I am talking about Mackesons in a clear pint glass here. Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

And for anyone traveling to the Washington DC area, there is a *very* good spot to try the worlds ales, beers, lagers and stouts. The Brickskellar. It's on P street very near the Rock Creek Parkway.

But if you want good music too, there's the Royal Mile Pub in Wheaton. The pub fare is great, the beers more unusual than most places, and there's much in live performance as well as some sessions and of course, the infamous Shanty Sings where anyone can stand and offer a song.

A few bottles of Dos Equis go well with Mexican cuisine. I have heard that this particular beer is the last or one of the last remaining examples of a true Vienna lager.

Patrish: It was one written by the late Keith Marsden and sung by Cockersdale. There is a wonderful book of all Keith's songs called "Picking Sooty Blackberries". I bet the Music Room at Cleckheaton will have it. Another of Keith's songs,"Doing the Manch" also mentions a few now defunct Yorkshire breweries. By the way, Simpson and Simpson (Brown Cow Brewery)have now brewed a beer to the Jug landlord's own recipe. If the name my husband gave it has stuck, it is called "That" as in "I'll have a pint of..." It's very nice and I think Syd said it has chocolate malt in it.

Yes, water does indeed make a difference, hence my first posting to this tangled thread. When Devenish Brewery moved their brewing from Weymouth to some where in Devon, the difference was noticeable immediately. Most of Dorset is chalk, which acts as one of the best natural filters in the world. Devon is getting towards sandstone, which filters about as well as a pound of sugar. In the drought in 1976, Dorset was one of the few counties that didn't actually run out of water, due to the subterranean stores of water under the chalk. Devon was reduced to standpipes and rationing long before much of the rest of the county. Guiness brewed using water from the Liffey really does taste different than that brewed elsewhere(or so the SO tells me, I can't stomach the stuff...).

There are so many buyouts going on in the British brewing industry these days, and production of so many of the "big" names is being shifted around the country that I tend to avoid them. The character of ale is often determined by the type of water used. If they only shift production from hard to soft water areas, they then have to start adding salts and such to change things. One case in point was Shipstones, which as you can imagine went also under another name. It was brewed in Nottingham and was one of those beers that you thought either poison or nectar. When it was right it was lovely. The brewery got bought out by Greenalls, I think, who moved production to the North West of the country. It then merged or got bought out again and I think it may be brewed somewhere near Burton now.(You Notts people, put me right. I haven't checked the Good Beer Guide). Anyway, there is some amber coloured liquid now masquerading as Shippo's and it's not the only one. Theakston's now only brew Old Peculier in Masham. The rest is brewed elsewhere but thankfully still tastes good. Stick to the small local breweries: they don't pretend to be anything other than what they are. (Got the barrel of Maiden's Century on order for Christmas).

LEJ, When you're in England NEVER order the best bitters, they are brewed for the tourists and for the snobs. The ordinary bitters (and milds if you can get 'em) are brewed for the local beer drinkers, who know what beer is all about.

Whitbread's Trophy was my favourite when I was there.

Although German beers are generally my favorites (St Pauli,Beck's,Hofbrau,Warsteiner), English Bitter ale is probably next in the running. When in Britain I usually order "Best" bitters in most pubs, but of those, Flowers and Ringwood ranked high. Of the choices of British beer available in America, I usually choose Newcastle Brown above Bass Ale and Watney's, although Old Peculiar looks intriguing.At $8.00 a 4 pack I have yet to partake. Guinness is delicious, but I find it a bit heavy and filling.

Anonymous, we are narrowing it down, you are obviously French, I hope you are suffering, I've not eaten French apples since the lamb fiasco, and now I'm boycotting ALL French goods. British beef is perfectly OK, even Brussels' says so, it is only the French (who feed their cattle human waste, and have had over 60 cases of BSE in NORMANDY ALONE in the last few years) who are refusing to see sense.

On the subject of beer again, Shepherd Neame do a brew called 'Spitfire', originally brewed to celebrate the a 50th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. If you drink more than 3 pints, you find out the next day just why it is called 'spitfire', and why there is a jolly red target on the label.......

Come on Gargoyle, let's have that absinthe recipe. Tasted it one time down in N'awlins (strictly illegally). I was fascinated by the device they had for dispensing it- like an elaborate brass and marble spigot with a basket under it for the wormwood, and below that a marble catch-basin, with a hole eroded in the center from the hundreds of years of drip-drip-drip.

And Jon I'm not too up on Teeltey's apart from knowing the awful nature of it in Derby and the piss taken out of it in the Monty Python sketch...re drinking Teetley's Red Barrel..

I've always though Absinthe, made with wormwood got a bum rap. The symptoms of absinthe addiction are curiously identical to alcohol addiction/poisoning. It's available as a medicinal tea in Korea, and you'll find women out in the springtime harvesting the wild stuff for family de-worming medicine.

Ah Liz, Sloe cider, I didn't have a hangover next day or the one after, my blood alcohol level didn't drop to normal for a week. SingsIrish Songs your local trading standards office might have a view on miss labelling(at least here in the UKthey do). My dictionary says"Cider: a drink made from apples" no mention of other fruits and "Perry: a drink made from fermented pear juice". Having just staggered back from ther pub at 17.00 on Sunday I can say that an important ingridient in the enjoyment of your favourite drink is a good pub and the right company. Oh and Shepherd Meames "Late Red" seems pretty good too.

When you are making your cider, add about 1/2lb per gallon of pricked sloes to the juice - sloes being the fruit of the blackthorn - it adds a certain je ne sais buggerit and should turn the cider to a lovely rich red colour, strain them off before bottling the stuff. When you want to drink it, go sit down somewhere first, preferrably near a soft surface, have someone who knows CPR on standby, and have a lemon handy to moisten your mouth with afterwards.....

A friend of mine used to press his own, and added a few pounds of sloes to the final cheese, to make the most evil and malicious cider the world has ever known....

Micca will confirm this, as soon as he gets the use of his hands back.....

Nice to see you back Joe

The sandwhich bag and rubberband permit the CO/2 to escape the bottle and blocks the oxygen from coming in.

The thick walled plastic bottle allows for a little compression of gas when it has slowed fermenting - don't tighten the real cap down until after it has cooled overnight and then leave it just a tad-bit loose to permit gas to escape if pressure gits too great. Watch out.... tighten it down all the way....forget about it for 10 days and you may end up "apple jack" all over hell's half acre. (In the eagerness of youth one of the first batches was placed on top of the indoor water heater to speed up fermentation - three gallons (in glass) exploded and three hours of scrubbing, supervised by and angry mother, was the penance. All future "experiments" were relegated to the "back-house/cottage."

Have some turn of the century recipes for "Absinth" which are nice for a "literary gathering" to explore the mystique of the "green fairy."

Gargoyle, okay I'll head out this week and experiment. My husband loves cider but hates beer. We used to be able to get Scrumpy Jack but they've stopped importing it now. Once when we went into the liquor store for cider all we could find was raspberry, peach, or something or other-flavoured cider. We asked for basic ordinary APPLE cider. "I don't think we have any apple flavoured cider in at at the moment sir." But do they carry beer flavoured beer? Sheesh!

I am cursed with an allergy to alcohol! (Stop laughing. It's true!) Life is a bitch - I suffer from migraines. Sometimes only one or two glasses will trigger it! It doesn't stop me trying beers in small quantities, though. A brewery which is fairly new (2 years) and which hasn't yet turned out a bad beer in my opinion is Simpson and Simpson Brown Cow Brewery from Barlow, near Selby. Had a barrel of their "ordinary" last Christmas, and we're having "Maiden's Century" (winner at Harrogate beer festival, along with their No. 4) this year. Their "Thelma's Day Out" won best new premium beer at this year's Doncaster Beerex. I used to brew, but with my husband being abroad such a lot it was going to waste. A good brewey is also Rudgate from York who do some superb brews. They do a wonderful Ruby Mild, and another, Fat Controller, which is the same with added caramel. As for cider, I love it, but it's even worse for me than the ale! Got some good stuff from a farm between Melksham and Bath once. Sold in 4 pint milk containers! Worked out at 50p a pint. Somebody now is bound to say they can get it cheaper. As for Babycham, which proves I have read down all this lot, it is still available I think, but I think I heard they have re-jigged the recipe, and made it less sweet. I have that drink to indirectly thank for learning to drink beer. In late 1969, when I met my husband, he was a poor student. The line was: "If you want me to buy your drinks you'll have to learn to drink ale". Beer was 1/10d a pint and Babycham was 2/6 a tiny bottle. So I started on Robin Hood IPA from the old (proper) Shipstones brewery at Nottingham, and the rest is history.

I tried Israeli "Maccabee" beer and some Palestinian brand this week, and a couple of brands in Rome last week. There is nothing like a fresh, bubbling, eversecent, cider in the fall. In the country with fresh crushed apples it is natural. However, cityfolk can get a very fair reproduction with a simple process.

1. Use champaign (wine) yeast (NOT!!! bread yeast) (less than $1.00 U.S.)
2. Add a sprinkling (1/5 of packet) to the top of a one gallon PLASTIC jug of good commercial apple juice. Cover top with loose plastic bag and rubber band (save cap)
3. Place in dark place 60 degrees or above for 5 days...
4. Cap and place in refrigerator for 48 hours...release pressure every day...

It is fresh and cloudy, slightly sweet with an alcohol content similar to American light-beer, but alot more flavor. It is best to start a new batch every Saturday so it is fresh for each Fall weekend....although it does keep it looses "something" when not actively fermenting. Have brewed it up to 12%abc with added sugars but fingers slip on the keys/threts after one....and people crawl home after three

If it had some hog's-hair and a rat-body floating in a 100 gallon vat...it would be close to the Sommerset Wursel's Scrampy.

Been brewing it (since age 15) ((in MOST US states the legal age for purchase of alcohol was 21....but the ingrediants were readily available everywhere ... a crushed apple in the batch can provide enough yeast to start the fermentation of the yeasty-beasties.))

Give I Zider, not that chemical piss in bottles but REAL medium sweet two or more years old from the farm.
One of the best I have drunk was 16% abv, very nice.
Years back a local farm used to keep cider ageing in small casks you want to try a 30 year old from a brandy cask now thats nectar.
Unfortunatly the EU has put an end to a lot of home produced cider "its not hygenic" bugger me nothing could live in a good cider not even germs.

I don't think my father wll forgive me for not mentioning Adnams - it is his favourite. The trouble is there are so many - I haven't had Shepherd Neame or Norton Old Hookey in years... mind you I think I like most bitters including Lees that seems to have a terrible name round here.

Does anybody know if Harveys and King and Barnes are still going? These were the beers that started me off on my beer drinking when I lived in Kent in the 70s.

I did find some real pleasure at a pup I played at the Yakima Folklife this past summer. Bob's Pub is a smoke free pup and he brews his own local brew. Great beer and I went in there thinking I was going to regret the bar crowd. Wrong.... It was a delightful time and opened me up to possibly doing bars. The little gal that played before me could not overcome the talking and chit chat,and of course I'm certain this was going to be another gig from hell. Wrong... The crowd was very receptive and with little prompting, they joined in singing and we had our selves a grand time. I'm learning to open up and even as you suggested, the smoke odors wash off. Thanks for reminding me that the pups are a lot of fun, with or without smoke.And the beer??? the best. Mudjack

Boys and Girls,

While I conceed my partiality to Guinness as the world's best stout, we seem to be forgetting the world's best commercial lager, Carlsberg. Danish beers seem to be some of the best in general. I'd also like to express my resentment of Bill D's reference to Iron City Beer as tasting like iron. Being a true Pittsburgher, I can recognize a good beer, which Iron City definately is. Also among my favorites are Penn Pilsner (also a Western PA thing) and Pete's Wicked Ale (not sure where thats from). Also try Serenac Lager and as always, Yuengling reigns supreme among the PA beers (which also include such names as Rolling Rock, etc......)

Garg, We used to make cider when we were in The Middle East. We'd take concentrated apple juice, water sugar and yeast (quantities by guess and by golly) and cover it, stir it every day 'till it fell clear. Came out like champagne most of the time. Rarely did we bottle it, it just didn't last that long.

What a response!! My favorite beer/ale? What time is it? You're all right (correct that is) I love them all (Bud,Coors,etc excepted of course). among the commercial/domestics brews, I'll tend toward Sam Adams; Pete's Wicked made a Maple Porter that was quite refreshing. But since I got a Homebrew kit for Christmast two years ago, I don't buy much beer any more. Some of the Homebrews I've made have outclassed all the greats. Its not an ego thing. When you keep out the preservatives, homogenization, etc. it opens up the flavor a whole lot. So I serve my own to all who dare And none have died or felt despair.

Bass and Sam Adams are typically my brews of choice, with the Dopplebock a personal fave among the Sam Adams. Never acquired a taste for Guinness; I'm an ale and lager person mostly, not much of a stout or pilsner fan.

I've encountered some excellent homebrewers, the best was the dearly departed husband of a friend of mine; he brewed a peach ale that was heavenly. To his dying day he couldn't believe I bid $30 on a six-pack of his brews at a charity auction. They were worth every penny!

Homebrews depend (like all beers) on the brewer although the ones thaat I have enjoyed have tended to be on the sweet side. They can be excellent - I guess whatever you feel like making. My mother (who doesen't drink) used to have great succes with a simple stout kit sold by Boots (chemists) - I have enjoyed gallons of the end product.

Okay, I lived in San Francisco for about 5 years--moved away only a few months ago...How could I forget their own brews: Anchor Steam and Gordon Biersch (also restaurant). Some good brews from both.

And Mick, I think you spelled that particular brew wrong...I think it is a "y" instead of "ie"...and a homebrew if I am not mistaken. I understand it is a very sweet, rich tasting nectar. There is a special blonde brew out of Leicestershire that I'd like to try. However, the name escapes me at the moment. It, too, is hard to find.

We were planning to go up to Downingtown during our honeymoon in September to take the brewery tour, but my car blew the heater coil and took all of our money. I've been in email contact with Jim Busch, who is an executive of some sort at the brewery, a homebrewer, and apparently a really nice guy. Sam Adams--It's the patriotic thing to do on this side of the Pond, and it's good, besides. I used to get a Peruvian beer-I forget the name, but I think it was Inca-but it disappeared from the local shelves. These beers are not the sissy soda pops that pass for the beer by the USA big 3.

I take it back..I can identify a couple of 'favorite' beers....

there is semi-local Dogfish Head Ale (The Immort Ale is chewey and spicy...has been compared to Single Malt Scotch )

and Celis Brewery in Austin ,Texas they are a transplanted Belgian brewing family, now making ales and such in Texas...Yum!

Any UK beer drinkers within reach of London (sorry for you trans-ponders) the Pigs Ear beer Festival from Tue 30 Nov to Sat 4th Dec(www.pigsear.org.uk) Its at Stratford East London and last year they had about 100 real ales and beers to taste and 10 or more ciders and perrys. If any one is going drop me a line in private and maybe we can meet up and send some envy making pics for publication to Barbara. Yeah CAMRA.I will post more after the event if anyone is interested, virtual beer, it should taste better than Fosters. I have to agree with Gargoyle about homebrew, I used to brew a lot at home before micros became popular. No matter how bad it was it was always better than the bought stuff.

I am currently trying to help a publican sort out a stock take system and have just been looking through the figures.

The most popular lager/ beer is Fosters which sells 6 times as much as either Guiness or the pub's most popular bitter which are about even and there are a couple of other (IMO) awful drinks including Bud that marginally outsell Guinness.

Poor old Mild comes in last in this section selling 33 times less than Fosters. There is no accounting for taste.

Mary, I'm assuming that the "new" Guinness cans is what we have had in the UK for a few years now. As far as I know, Guinness were one of the pioneers of what I think they first called the "widget" and the smooth pour cans. They certainly do make a difference and even some of the canned bitters here use that or a similar system.

Beer from tap is definitely better....even Guinness' "New" Pub Draught Cans are better than the bottled. Anyone else have the canned Guinness? I want to write the company, because everytime I buy it, the bottoms of the cans have bowed out...too much pressure????

And Tetley's to me always meant a brand of tea bags! Boy am I learning lots.

Cara! Someone finally mentioned Anchor Steam. I always look for it when I'm in the States but not too many places carry it. I discovered it about 15 years ago which I think was before the introduction of micro breweries.

A few weeks ago, I was going through a book of Scottish fiddle tunes that I had picked up, playing some on the pennywhistle, since I have more facility with that than the fiddle. All of a sudden, a new tune started coming out unbidden. I rushed to get some staff paper (I really have to keep some in every room of the house for these moments) and wrote it down. I was stuck for one phrase and played around with different possibilities until I found something that worked. Of course, it flew away from me immediately. Fortunately, my wife is blessed with the ability to remember these things and she hummed it back to me so I could work it out again and write it down.

When I was finished, I cast about for a title. As I picked up my beer, the title came to me: A Good Glass of Ale. I am now trying to write words to it. I think it will make a good marching song.

I'll share the lyrics and tune with the 'Catters when I get it finished. All I have so far is the tag line -
In a keg or a bottle, be it Porter, Stout, or Pale;
There is naught so refreshing as a good glass of ale!

If anyone has seen my muse, please send her back my way!

The best all-around every-day beer for me is Anchor Steam. The Anchor Porter is also lovely, lovely and chocolatey, but we're coming up on the time of year for the Anchor Christmas Ale (?) which is the absolute tops. Only available for a few weeks per year, and oh so worth the wait.

A good hoppy beer available locally is Tupper's Hop Pocket. Not for the faint of heart. I also like Red Tail Ale, tho it sometimes affects me more like a drug than a beer for some reason.

I've been known to drink a few Guinness and Harp too, having worked in an "Irish" pub for a while. And I am one to participate in endless annoying conversations about which venue serves a better pint of the black stuff. I even befriended my friendly neighborhood Guinness rep with the sole purpose of getting the inside track for these parts.

I would not drink domestic beer under any circumstances, ever, nor anything in a green bottle (when I say "import", please don't respond with "Heineken"; yuck). I do however confess to a guilty affair with Rolling Rock (RoRo) in college. The cryptic nature of the label drew me in...what does it mean? And what's up with the Yuengling cult in Penn.? There's something funny in that beer. People are absolutely wild for it, yet it's strangely unavailable outside PA. Something odd there...

Guiness is my very favourite, but here in Canada it can be pricy so I only treat myself from time to time. Although I live in central Canada, my two favourite domestics are Moosehead and Alexander Keith's India Pale Ale.

While I was England and Scotland many years ago I really enjoyed the various Bitters that I tried, I wish I could remember the brand names.

My beer of choice at any given time depends on a number of factors, such as mood, ambient temperature, what I have to be capable of doing later, etc. That said, the beer I drink most often if available would be Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. This is the one I am currently trying to emulate with my homebrew. If you like truly hoppy ales, however, I have to recommend Victory HopDevil, brewed in Downingtown, PA. This stuff screams hops from the moment you uncap the bottle. I don't find it overly bitter. The hops were used more for flavor and aroma. In colder weather, though, I go more for Porters and Stouts.

Why am I so tempted to say Budweiser? Probably because I'm ornery, but the crap tastes like soap to me. So amny of you are so much more "learned" in this matter than I am, and I ain't really much of a beer drinker. I think its because I went to college in a dry county at a school that opposed drinking to begin with. Hence, EVERYONE drank their ass off. But being mainly poor, young, and ignorant, we drank mainly Pabst, Bud, Carlings, or whatever we could buy and sneak in CHEAP. Just kinda' turned me on the whole thing eventually. Mainly I use beer to baste ribs. Sorry. When I do have one or two, I like Foster's. But I do have a limerick!!

Ahh, now we're on a subject I know a great deal about!!!

I lived in a county (Dorset) that is smaller than London, and had at one point no less than 4 major breweries, within 20 miles of my home (heck, the county is only 45 across.....)and at least two microbreweries, one directly across the road from my lodgings.... There were in that town, 21 pubs, 3 clubs and numerous off licences. I visited them all in one week..... for a bet. I won. And as Micca will confirm, my wedding reception was on the premises of the world famous and greatly revered Eldridge Pope & Co, so I can organise a p**s up in a brewery....!

For favourites, I have to confess, a deep and fond regard for the now sadly faded Wessex, used to be made in Weymouth, they renamed it JD (for John Devenish, the original brewer), closed the Weymouth brewery so it had to be imported from Devon, then called it something poofy like 'Golden Hop', changed the recipe and finally it ceased to be the beer it once was.... It was my first taste of beer, weaned me off of cider (my grandfather used to make his own, that's how they used to keep me quiet as a child..... hmmmmm)and got me hooked for good. My prefered now has to be Tanglefoot or Badger Best, made by the Hall and Woodhouse Brewery, Blandford, Dorset. Available both bottled and canned, it travels well, and keeps fairly well too. None of this widget stuff either.

First allegance must always go to Eldridge Popes' Royal Oak beer. Golden and rich, hoppy yet nutty, a poem in a pint pot. But there are certain beers that have to be drunk in an English pub. Royal Oak doesn't taste the same sitting in the front room watching Eastenders....

And as for Belgian beer..... There are as many as there are days in the year, and my favourites this year are Palm (jolly picture of a cart horse on it) and Grimbergen blonde, but there have been others, too many to even contemplate, let alone discuss here....

Incidentally, I understand the Alcoholics Anthem is in the database, have a look at it, to the tune of 'Men of Harlech' (or 'Woad' if that's the one you learnt first)it goes down a storm at most singarounds, especially if you are glutted with good singers and long drinking songs.

I started with the usual prejudices about "mass produced" Canadian beer until my Father -in-law introduced me to the products of the Upper Canada brewing company in Toronto, "Rebellion" with a picture on the label reminiscent of chucking out time at my local pub and their. I was also introduced, this last summer, in Toronto, to single apple cider, No not made from one apple but from one species, The one I liked was mad from Granny Smiths and was served in a pint beer mug half full of ice and two bottles poured in, on a hot night it was divine. The big brews in Canada IMHO taste like swimming in lake Ontario with a Hop in your mouth.

I haven't tasted nor heard of Babycham, Bugsy.

Midchuck, I was wondering if anyone would mention one of the Genny beers! (ie Genessee from Rochester, NY...) I used to like the comercials when back home--ie the one where the guy blows up the wrong building and the campaign slogan "Boy could I go for a Genny now." Definitely a "typical American beer".

Mudjack, thanks for mentioning Full Sail. That's one I had forgotten 'bout.

There are definitely alot of good sounding beers mentioned. I came across some good one's in the German section of Switzerland...but do you think I can recall names. NO! Though I did find out I am not to fond of the wheat beers.

Here's another item....black and tans...I am familiar with Bass and Guinness layered in the glass...I was surprised when I learned of the "pre mixed" and bottled B & T's.

Since all this matter of globalization came up, we in Argentina have a wide availability of beers imported from US, UK, Germany, Holland, Belgium, even Japan and Israel!. So I could hardly tell you anything new, except for the local beer : we are large producers of beer, first to fit the needs of 35 million thirsty citizens who are constantly reducing consumption of traditional wines and turning to beer, and second, to export our culture to the world. If you have the opportunity, try the excellent ISENBECK followed by QUILMES and SANTA FE. There are (until now) no small breweries.
And I leave here 'cause I have to visit a friend of mine who is in the hospital. The doctors detected a very high degree of blood in his alcoholic circulatory system.

When I was in University was when the dreaded Beer Strike hit in Ontario. The only thing you could get was Grizzly beer made in Hamilton. Something about their brewing process made their beer give me the Worst hangovers. Yuck! But now I drink Guiness, Old Peculiar, some kind of Bock, and others whose name I cannot, after two of Sleeman's Honey Browns, remember. Generally I like 'em dark and not too sweet.

Now living in the Northwest where all the micro-breweries are, Grant's Wheat ale (Yakima)Full Sail (Hood River)and McMinemins in Portland. They're all great. And there is a bunch more I have'nt tried yet.I just won't drink those Buds, Coors or standard watered down beer imitations. I like them thick and un-filtered.

I find I don't get the dreaded head staggers or the tummy wobbles as bad by drinking the old black stuff.
I'm not a culty person, but I recognise the need for nourishment when on a 5 or 6 day session, when the craic is good, food (or rather the going out and eating of it), can be a real pain, and can take away from the serious business of playing music.
As the man said "There's both eatin' and drinkin' in it."
Us Paddys are a practical people.

A few years back, an Irish teacher friend asked me to sing at her summer party. While I did, she kept handing me some cold SLEEMAN's ale....I never really liked beer before then!! After my first visit to Mexico, I appreciated the taste of really cold Corona. A few fruity brews have been good as well.....with cherry . I tend to enjoy beer in the summer and red wine in the colder weather. When I was in Scotland a few years ago, singing in a few pubs, I tried to develop a taste for the " G " but failed.....even though many were provided by an appreciative hand.

Otter Creek Hickory Switch Smoked Amber. Out of Middlebury, VT. Haven't seen any yet this Fall. Hope they're going to keep making it.

Oddly enough, I'm partial to Gennessee Light, which is _really_ like making love in a canoe, for when I'm singing or in a jam. Keeps your throat wet but you don't get (very) drunk...

Guinness is fine...but it has become a cult thing...(and it really IS in a class by itself...different process than most stouts)..(I like MacKeson, too)

however...On the wall, and in boxes in my basement are 600-700 empty bottles (and a few cans) that I, personally emptied....choose a 'best'? I don't think so..*grin*..I love good hoppy ales...and rich porters and stouts...and tangy wheat beers...and heavy winter brews that are almost caramel....and weird stuff like Belgian red beer...

If you know Austrailian beers, I have been collecting since Tooth's made Sheaf Stout...(try saying "Tooth's Sheaf Stout" 3 times fast)

and I have a bottle from the brewry that really started the micro-brew revolution in the US..New Albion..(porter)Yum!

Yes, I have visited in the Pacific NW..(Seattle area, mostly), and that really IS beer heaven...(but so would parts of California, be)...unless you add in Belgium, which is beer Nirvana.

and I had a friend bring me a "Black Mac" from New Zealand...which Pete M. (he IS still out there!) have discussed on occasion.

One of my favorite srories about folk music, folkies, and beer......I went to a house concert in Virginia, USA one time a number of years ago..15?-17?...to hear Johnny Collins and Jim Mageean...great fun!...so, at the break someone asked them if they'd like a beer...(remember...this was 15 years ago in the US!)...Johnny & Jim looked at each other...that LOOK!..*smile*..."Umm...what do you have?"....several things were mentioned, not getting much of a response..and someone asked them what they usually drink when in the states..."Well, in this area we usually try Iron City...at least it tastes like something"...*much laughter*....(Iron City, I think tastes a lot like iron)....so I decided to play hero...."ummm...I have some stuff here you might like", I said. "Oh?" said John, "What?"..."Well, I have some Sam Smith's........"

INSTANTLY he dropped to one knee in front of me, hands together in prayer...calling over his shoulder.."JIM! Jim...he's got SAM SMITHS!!"....so I gave up a couple bottles of the finest to the boys, and I dare say, the 2nd half of the concert was even better....

that was GOOD beer that night..the only thing is, Sam Smith's comes in a clear bottle, and does NOT like exposure to light and getting too old, so one has to be VERY careful in the US about where one buys it. It is expensive, and dealers simply do not care if they sell old, skunky beer...and Sam Smith doesn't date his product.The one time I ever returned beer was a six pack of NASTY 'old' Sam Smith's ale!

I would gather from that (SingsIrish Songs) that you are not familia with Babycham the "Original Champagne Perry". A big favourite with the girls when I was in my teens.

Mary Kate, if its made with apples its cider if its with pears its perry, perry is usually drier and very alcoholic and will knock one A**e over t*ts in no time at all but goood ones are wonderful, in the cider category Biddenden truly nectar, Beers Greene King's Abbot, Shepherd Neame's Porter( makes one of the best Carbonnade Flamande ever)Wadsworths 6X,Hall Woodhouse Tanglefoot and many more

Out here in Pennsylvania we drink Yuengling's Black and Tan and also their Lord Chesterfield. Big Mick will kill me for saying this but for imported stouts, my favourite is Mackeson. We have several good micros around here as well.

Jon - Definitely Abbot Ale! Also like Ruddles County. As for beer here in Australia, Dogbolter, Hahn Premium, Fremantle Bitter(alas no more) Carlton Crown Lager.

When I was stationed in Lincolnshire with the RAF in the late 60's the local brew was Holes. Just about the worst beer I've ever tasted, with the exception of their "Castle Stout" which was nectar. Of course Courage brought them out and the only beer they dumped was the stout! Typical Courage.

Here are a few of mine. Stouts, Guinness and Beamish. Bitters, Ruddles County, Abbot Ale, Burton, Draught Bass. There is a bitter brewed about 30 miles away from that I am very fond of called Pedwar Bawd (Four Thumbs) which I think is ever bit as good as the better known brews but none of the pubs near me sell it so I rarely get to try it.

I've been on the East Coast of the States and now live on the West Coast and have come to really appreciate beer.

Not the watered down brands that are readily advertised on the television...more like imports or the marvelous microbrews that have become very popular.

My first favourite is of course Guinness but I've come to like Smith's (if I remember correctly) Oatmeal Stout from England and Young's Luxury Double Chocolate Stout (also English) isn't bad either...

In the States there are some good brews from Samuel Adams...Siera Nevada...Pete's Wicked Ale (on occasion) and in Syracuse, NY downtown at Empire Brew Pub in the Armory, I've tasted some good microbrews....A few years ago I had the opportunity to brew a batch of Honey Lager that wasn't bad. I've also come to like various hard ciders both apple and pear...Woodchuck and Woodpecker for the apple ciders (one is sweet, and I cannot remember which is which)....Wyders (?) for the pear.

Beer, it isn't just Michelob, Coors, Molson, Bud, etc anymore....

And temperature sure does matter! Ice cold hides the flavour!
