Subject: RE: Manchester's 'Sing for Ethiopia' weekend From: Charley Noble Date: 15 Mar 14 - 10:32 AM Good luck on the special event. I have good memories of revisiting Ethiopia in 2007, where I taught as a Peace Corps volunteers from 1965-68. Here's a song that came to me on the long flight home: click here for lyrics and MP3 Sample! Words and music by Charles Ipcar, © 3-14-09 Tune inspired by traditional Sail Away, Ladies, Sail Away Key: D (2/C) Evening Shadows Fall C--------G----C----C---C---------G---C Evening shad-ows fall, evening shad-ows fall; C--------G----C----C---C---------G----C Evening shad-ows fall, evening shad-ows fall; C--------------------F--------------------C See the moon rise through the trees, feel the chill of a timeless breeze; C--------------------F--------------------C See the moon rise through the trees, feel the chill of a timeless breeze; C--------G----C----C---C---------G----C Evening shad-ows fall, evening shad-ows fall; C--------G----C----C---C---------G----C Evening shad-ows fall, evening shad-ows fall. Build the fire bright, build the fire bright; Build the fire bright, build the fire bright; Watch the embers dart and fly, join the stars up in the sky; Watch the embers dart and fly, join the stars up in the sky. Build the fire bright, build the fire bright; Build the fire bright, build the fire bright. Raise your horn cups high; raise your horn cups high; Raise your horn cups high; raise your horn cups high; Praise the Mistress of the Stars, may her wisdom guide us far; Praise the Mistress of the Stars, may her wisdom guide us far. Raise your horn cups high; raise your horn cups high. Raise your horn cups high; raise your horn cups high. Hear the drum beats sound; hear the drum beats sound; Hear the drum beats sound; hear the drum beats sound; Dance and sing the night away; welcome in the break of day; Dance and sing the night away; welcome in the break of day. Hear the drum beats sound; hear the drum beats sound Hear the drum beats sound; hear the drum beats sound. See the sun rise, see the sun rise; See the sun rise, see the sun rise. Cheerily, Charlie Ipcar |

Subject: Manchester's 'Sing for Ethiopia' 1985 From: GUEST,Roger Liptrot Date: 14 Mar 14 - 06:37 PM In 1985 I had the good fortune to be part of the organising committee for Manchester's 'Sing for Ethiopia' weekend alongside Bram Taylor, Les and Andy Swarbrick, Helen and Dave Howard and the rest of the Black Lion residents. Over the weekend local Folk Clubs were given up to an hour to showcase the talents of their residents, floor singers and guests, whilst any singers dropping in such as Peter Bond, Pete Morton and Clive Gregson and Christine Collister were given 'floor spots' and the whole weekend was capped by a concert compared by the late great Dave Shannon and including Hobson and Lees, Heather Whittaker, Jolly Jack and Chris and Joe While. Fortunately, as well as my guitar, I took my camera and the results can be seen here: http://www.folkimages.com/Ethiopia/index.htm All this took place a month before 'Live Aid', for which Sir Bob was knighted, as far as I'm aware Bram's still waiting for his! Any assistance in identifying those Folk Clubs / Performers that I've forgotten with the passage of time would be appreciated! |
