Penetrating power isn't that important, you just need the music to be quiet. A woman with a soft voice doing an unaccompanied song is the best way there is to shut a pub up.

DTM and Loppo, why not try, just once, the advice of a seasoned professional who has been advised by other seasoned professionals?

For those who have wandered, mesmerized, onto the topic of beer consumption, the advice was, when the crowd gets narky, play something slower. Leadsmith added from experience, try a tune on the whistle.

A half is what serious liver executioners drink. Trust me, some still stagger this earth. Wetherspoons from 9.00am mainly.
A couple of times a year our local Wetherspoons starts serving 'third of a pint' glasses (Beer festival, try 3 ales for the price of a pint).
The measure is still legal in the UK.

The comment about drinking faster in 'halves' also applies at beer festivals.
Drinking halves (whether from a half-pint glass, or from a pint glass marked at the half pint measure) makes you take one mouthful, look at the glass, and think "There's not much left, I may as well finish that and get another!"

"Cigarettes and Whisky"
"Seven Drunken Nights" ... etc.

IF the 'audience' is on the noisy side , NEVER turn the volume up ! They will just get noisier ! Far better to do something quiet , but interesting . I find something like a whistle tune often works .

I used to be a very naughty girl years ago, and would put that Smurf song on the juke box in pubs, not once but two or three times. It's amazing how quickly the pub emptied of punters.

Fully agree about the 3/4 time, as I should make a proper post to this thread after all.

Many songs can live a new life by slowing them and turning into a waltz.

Mind you, if a pub got too rowdy and there was a piano nearby, the temptation to stoke a Wild West scene might be too irresistible!

Musket, I play piano, and I find that the least amount of alcohol throws off my hand's ability to work together. Other people don't have that problem, obviously.

I think another way to calm people is to use 3/4 time. I find it more peaceful. What do you think?

Because today is St Patrick's Day, the Kansas City Star ran an interview with Eddie Delahunt, an Irish-born musician who moved here about 1989. Eddie's name comes up frequently in the KC scene, and I'm sure he has handled a lot of audiences.

He had this to say, and I found it interesting:

Q: What's it like being around people who are drinking when you're not?

Eddie: It doesn't bother me. I'm in the entertainment industry, so I see it coming. If people in the audience start getting narky (cranky) I slow the music down - I learned that from other pros over here.
