Subject: RE: a pub tip from a professional From: GUEST,DTM Date: 22 Mar 14 - 11:51 AM Hi Leeneia, I totally agree with you re. taking advice from the seasoned pros'. (After playing for 50 years, I still think that "My Way" is an option though) ;-) |

Subject: RE: a pub tip from a professional From: Jack Campin Date: 21 Mar 14 - 11:59 AM Penetrating power isn't that important, you just need the music to be quiet. A woman with a soft voice doing an unaccompanied song is the best way there is to shut a pub up. |
Subject: RE: a pub tip from a professional From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 21 Mar 14 - 11:50 AM DTM and Loppo, why not try, just once, the advice of a seasoned professional who has been advised by other seasoned professionals? For those who have wandered, mesmerized, onto the topic of beer consumption, the advice was, when the crowd gets narky, play something slower. Leadsmith added from experience, try a tune on the whistle. |
Subject: RE: a pub tip from a professional From: Nigel Parsons Date: 21 Mar 14 - 10:46 AM A half is what serious liver executioners drink. Trust me, some still stagger this earth. Wetherspoons from 9.00am mainly. A couple of times a year our local Wetherspoons starts serving 'third of a pint' glasses (Beer festival, try 3 ales for the price of a pint). The measure is still legal in the UK. The comment about drinking faster in 'halves' also applies at beer festivals. Drinking halves (whether from a half-pint glass, or from a pint glass marked at the half pint measure) makes you take one mouthful, look at the glass, and think "There's not much left, I may as well finish that and get another!" |

Subject: RE: a pub tip from a professional From: GUEST,loppo Date: 20 Mar 14 - 08:23 PM just do your own stuff regardless, grit your teeth(grit?) and b*******s to em |
Subject: RE: a pub tip from a professional From: GUEST,DTM Date: 20 Mar 14 - 04:51 PM Oops sorry. Narky crowd? Emmmm... I usually try and find somebody - anybody - who is listening and sing/play directly to them and ignore the ignorami Either that or just go home. :-) |
Subject: RE: a pub tip from a professional From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 20 Mar 14 - 10:33 AM The initial tip wasn't about a noisy crowd, it was a narky (cranky) crowd. that's different |
Subject: RE: a pub tip from a professional From: GUEST,DTM Date: 19 Mar 14 - 06:25 PM If the crowd are noisy and intoxicated best thing to do is to sing drinking songs a-la ..... "Little Old Wine Drinker Me" "A Pub With No Beer" "Cigarettes and Whisky" "Seven Drunken Nights" ... etc. That ought to do it. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em ;-) |
Subject: RE: a pub tip from a professional From: Steve Shaw Date: 19 Mar 14 - 03:34 PM Drink halves not pints. ????? ?????????? Er, what's "a half...."? |
Subject: RE: a pub tip from a professional From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 19 Mar 14 - 11:00 AM I can see how that would work, Leadfingers, because a whistle, being high, would sail right through the ambient noise. |
Subject: RE: a pub tip from a professional From: Leadfingers Date: 18 Mar 14 - 09:41 PM IF the 'audience' is on the noisy side , NEVER turn the volume up ! They will just get noisier ! Far better to do something quiet , but interesting . I find something like a whistle tune often works . |
Subject: RE: a pub tip from a professional From: Big Al Whittle Date: 18 Mar 14 - 02:28 PM a mate of mine used to make the smurf records. his wall was full of gold smurf albums. one time the record company sent the album back with order, make it more funny......! |
Subject: RE: a pub tip from a professional From: Musket Date: 18 Mar 14 - 01:53 PM The laughing gnome? Up there with Ziggy Stardust in my opinion.... |
Subject: RE: a pub tip from a professional From: GUEST Date: 18 Mar 14 - 12:18 PM The smurf son g is now old enough to qualify as a traditional ballad about fairy folk. Likewise Bowie's Laughing Gnome? |
Subject: RE: a pub tip from a professional From: Sandra in Sydney Date: 18 Mar 14 - 05:11 AM Eliza! you naughty???? I can't believe it |
Subject: RE: a pub tip from a professional From: GUEST,Eliza Date: 18 Mar 14 - 04:06 AM I used to be a very naughty girl years ago, and would put that Smurf song on the juke box in pubs, not once but two or three times. It's amazing how quickly the pub emptied of punters. |
Subject: RE: a pub tip from a professional From: GUEST,Musket Date: 18 Mar 14 - 03:39 AM Fully agree about the 3/4 time, as I should make a proper post to this thread after all. Many songs can live a new life by slowing them and turning into a waltz. Mind you, if a pub got too rowdy and there was a piano nearby, the temptation to stoke a Wild West scene might be too irresistible! |
Subject: RE: a pub tip from a professional From: GUEST,Malcolm Storey Date: 17 Mar 14 - 09:41 PM So I went to the pub tonight (17th March) and when I walked in the landlady said to me "Would you like a pint of your usual at £2.90 a pint or would you like a Guinness on offer at £2.50 a pint?" "What a strange question to ask a Yorkshireman" I replied slainte and very nice it was too Well the thread is associated with St Patrick's Day |
Subject: RE: a pub tip from a professional From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 17 Mar 14 - 09:06 PM Thanks, you two. Musket, I play piano, and I find that the least amount of alcohol throws off my hand's ability to work together. Other people don't have that problem, obviously. I think another way to calm people is to use 3/4 time. I find it more peaceful. What do you think? |
Subject: RE: a pub tip from a professional From: Bert Date: 17 Mar 14 - 06:38 PM Good tip Leeneia, I'll use that. |
Subject: RE: a pub tip from a professional From: Musket Date: 17 Mar 14 - 03:06 PM A pub tip from a professional. Drink halves not pints. You actually end up drinking more if the barmaid isn't too busy. Allegedly. |
Subject: a pub tip from a professional From: GUEST,leeneia Date: 17 Mar 14 - 02:38 PM Because today is St Patrick's Day, the Kansas City Star ran an interview with Eddie Delahunt, an Irish-born musician who moved here about 1989. Eddie's name comes up frequently in the KC scene, and I'm sure he has handled a lot of audiences. He had this to say, and I found it interesting: Q: What's it like being around people who are drinking when you're not? Eddie: It doesn't bother me. I'm in the entertainment industry, so I see it coming. If people in the audience start getting narky (cranky) I slow the music down - I learned that from other pros over here. ============= I thought that was interesting - slow the music down to calm the audience. |
