Subject: PADDY'S WEEK: 'DIFFERENT' SONGS
From: GUEST,Wellsy
Date: 17 Mar 14 - 09:45 PM

I saw the " Paddy's Day Approaches' thread before the weekend. Now that it's all over, I'd like to find out what lesser-heard songs you might have heard over the weekend.

Stuff other than the core 30. 40, 50 songs which become very jaded if ( like me) you are in a regularly working Irish band ( we did 7 gigs on the weekend, and more to come this coming weekend.

Here's a start -

Johnny Don'T Go - John Spillane
The Contender ( boxing song)
My Singing Bird ( trad.)
Stick to the Cratur ( ?)

And yes, as well as including you in a discussion, this is a shameless fishing expedition for new songs.

Thanks. WELLSY

1. Casey would dance with the strawberry blonde, AND THE BAND PLAYED ON. (One of my favorite songs)

2. Here's the URL for the Lester Levy collection, where searching for the word 'Irish' brings up 228 songs.

http://levysheetmusic.mse.jhu.edu/catalog?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=Irish

If that doesn't suffice, search Colleen, shamrock and emerald.

3. Visit your public library for collections. Try the 784's or thereabouts.

4. Buy the Hal Leonard Corp.'s 'Celtic Fakebook'

"Starry Night" by Davy Spillane (A Place Among the Stones album). "Tinkerman's Daughter" by Niamh Parsons (Loosely Connected album). And, since spring is here(almost), "The Green Man" by Martin Donnelly and "When the Green Man Walks the Forest" by Martyn Wyndham-Reed. "Widow's Walk" by Brendan Nolan is always a nice surprise.

The one that got most audience joining in at our do on Paddy's afternoon was 'Whisky in the jar'

I started it off & caught sight of a guy obviously wanting to do a verse so I signalled him go ahead.

He did to great acclaim from rest audience, then the song developed so lots people round the room did a verse each - splendid, must find more to do this way!

It is magic when that happens Mr. Happy.

Here's one of mine

Exponential Blarney (Bert Hansell)
You can sing this to the tune of 'Back to Donnegal'

A
If you go to Ireland
    D
and you have a tale to tell
             A
They'll tell you a couple back
E7
and tell 'em twice as well

A
For two for one's the deal me lads
    D
The best you've ever known
    A
For everyone in Ireland
E7            A
Has kissed the blarney stone

Now you've got three stories
You're really in a fix
Tell 'em to a friend be boys
and he'll come back with six

Now you've got nine stories
And as sure as Ireland's green
Tell 'em to a neighbor
And he'll tell you eighteen

Now I've twenty seven stories
And if I tell them to you
You'll have to tell me fifty four
Before this day is through

If you keep telling stories
As you go from door to door
You'll have fifty million stories
That you've never heard before
