The DT has this parody:

COMIN' THROUGH THE RYE
(Alan Sherman?)

Don't be a stingy sandwich-maker
Pile the cold cuts high
Customers should see salami
Coming through the rye.

However, somewhere it the crannies of my brain there's "real", i.e., not parody, words. But I can't dredge any up. I know you 'catters can help.

Sandy. The DT returned only the parody. The basic search didn't pull up the Burns. Like the gravedigger, bots are precise knaves, and I had searched "through". Thanks, Sandy! I prefer real folk to Googleville, and lo! I get not only my answer, but a witticism & a smiley to boot!

I'm quite sure I heard my late sibling's bawdy parody far more often than the original, and since I can't play without lyrics looping in the old skull, I came here.

And there's also a 'roch' version in 'The Merry Muses of Caledonia' -- a collection of bawdry by Burns -- which I shan't copy!

From the late and much lamented Hamish Imlach-

Jeannie McPherson is a person wi lovely yellow hair,
We went together doon frae a walk last Glasgow Fair,
The rain it then came doon in torrents,
Her hair she couldnae keep dry,
And all the day the streaks of grey,
Kept coming through the dye.

Anyone remember? that terrible childhood joke about the fancy-dress party where everyone had to be a song title. The girl all in highly decorated yellow clothes said she was The Golden Vanity; the man with big wheels and a don't-care expression said he was Any Lorry [geddit?]. The naked man with a bunch of bearded grass round his privates said he was Coming Through The Rye...

MtheGM almost as bad as the cartoon of a Centurion with a candle in one hand and a Highland Collie on a lead in his other hand.   "roamin' in the gloamin wi' a lassie by my side".
