I've just realised that Paul was a regular at the Wessex Traditional Folk Club in Bournemouth for a few months in the late 60s or early 70s when he was working in the area. I think he worked for someone like McAlpine's.

We're having a fiftieth anniversary celebration next month and Paul's name came up. I suddenly remembered this thread but hadn't made the connection when it was started. I'll tell those who remember him the sad news.

I vividly remember going off to some festival or other in Pauls Hillman Hunter. I am just glad I was sitting in the back!!

A little story....Giffard Morris, dancing on the prom at Sidmouth, Paul arrives, pissed as a parrot, a Beetroot Juice and Rum 'workshop' at the Masons(don't ask!) Leaning on a rowboat on the prom, plays for first dance OK, second dance he starts wrong tune, and tries 3-4 others, none of which are the one we want...so.. eventually (as Squire).. I say 'well bugger it we'll dance it to that one' ! Whilst playing he then fell backwards into the boat , but never missed a beat....great player, lovely man, so sorry to lose him so early...goodbye my old friend - DAVE HUNT

Paul was a huge influence on my teenage life, at the Tower folk club and elsewhere. He, along with his brother Nick and the late Paul Wright, got me into folk music, rock climbing and Old Holborn rollups...

I still have my hand-written folk song books, started when I was about 16, in which I wrote down the words of songs I heard and wanted to learn. I always noted down who I got the song from, and the name Paul Havell featured prominently.

Paul had the dirtiest laugh I ever heard. It started as a throaty gurgle and grew into a bellow of utter decadence, usually accompanied by the words "you piss-artist!" He had a deep appreciation for the filthiest rugby songs the English language has to offer. He also had the ability, when almost impossibly pissed, to carry on playing the accordion brilliantly long after the power of speech had long escaped him.

God bless you, Paul, you were a lover of life and a one-off marvel.

I used to run the Tower folk club in Walthamstow and Paul was one of our residents, he was also a neighbour in Leyton. So sorry to hear of his passing - too young.

Yes, Paul went to the Tower, because that's where I first met him and he was introduced to me by Tony Coll in the early 70s before he moved to the West Midlands. The next time I met him was at Sidmouth in 1974, when, I think (though memory may not be that reliable after 40 years), he was working as an engineer on the construction of the M69... he gave me a lift to the Jolly Porters in Exeter for a meeting of the Exeter folk club on the Tuesday evening.

Very sorry to hear that Paul's gone - deepest condolences to family and friends.

Is My memory playing tricks,but did he used to go to the tower folk club in leyton in its early days, I seem to remember his melodeon playing it was at that time outstanding.

Hi Dave - and all who knew Paul,
It is very sad news, indeed. As Paul's ex-wife, I have many happy memories of those early years when we were in our twenties and felt invincible. The list goes on: residency at the Old Crown, Digbeth, fantastic Morris musician for Giffard Morris, Holdens Goldens, Iron Men&Severn Gilders. For a few years he had a ceilidh band called Tettenhall Dick, playing English Country music - and then of course was a founder member of All Blacked Up.
He had many friends in Penn, Wolverhampton, where he lived before moving to Shrophsire. We share many great memories of going mob-handed to festivals,especially Chippenham and Sidmouth.Paul was a wonderful melodeon player who was very influenced by Rod Stradling's playing - we had the Old Swan Band play at our wedding ceilidh back in 1979.Happy days! A talented musician and a very kind, generous man.He will be missed. My thoughts go out to Jo - and to Nick,Jane and Kate Havell. It is sad news about Paul who was a lovely guy.
I have very fond memories of when he used to come to the Old Crown in Birmingham of a Friday Night he was a fine musician and will be sadly missed.

For those that may not have heard, Paul Havell died last weekend. It was not unexpected but still a shock of course. He had had cancer for several years, which started in his jaw and he had the chemo etc..treatments. Recently he had problems and had to go into hospital, they discharged him into hospice care at home. He died last weekend on Sunday afternoon, in his sleep, so fortunately peacefully and not in pain.
I first met Paul when he moved to Wolverhampton very many years ago and joined Giffard Morris, he was our Bagman for several years. He was one of the best musicians for Cotswold that I have ever heard. After Giffard folded he moved to Telford and joined me (and three other ex-Giffard men) in Ironmen and Severn Gilders, where for a long time he was a principal musician, and a very efficient secretary. He was also founder member of the very successful band - 'All Blacked Up' well know on the festival ceilidh circuit. Also a regular at sessions and ECMWs. A great, stylish, melodeon player and a good friend. Our thoughts are with his wife Jo and family.
