On the Voice in the US last season, Harry Connick Jr was a guest mentor, and told performers they needed to understand the lyrics to do the song justice. It wasn't enough to be technically great if you didn't get the emotion across. From the videos I've seen of Sally Barker on the show, she gets it all. I'm glad to see she's in the finals!

That's right Dick try pulling the Leicester card. No doubt whatsoever that Sally is an absolutely stunning singer and I wish her nothing but success

I remember Sally from when I briefly lived in the Leicester area, I always thought she had a great voice, glad to see she is getting recognition

"However, in The Voice she seems to have found a wonderful balance between emotion, commitment to the song, restraint, and the occasional trip into the higher register (which met with an audience scream last week!)"

I may have been the cause of that. My apologies. It was purely unintentional. I bumped into a lady's south end with the head of a six-string guitar. I told her to count her blessings I wasn't playing a hollowed-out pineapple. Then I melted into the crowd.

There was some opportunity for Sally to say a bit about her past performing experience and background in the very first programme, but as these were then "blind auditions" I guess she could not say too much that would further identify her.
Interesting what you say Anne Neilson, as Sally is someone who CAN do, very effectively, the most incredible vocal gymnastics on occasion: I'm thinking particularly of her Joni Mitchell project concerts, which left me breathless. She really has a spectrum of different voices to suit different songs.
However, in The Voice she seems to have found a wonderful balance between emotion, commitment to the song, restraint, and the occasional trip into the higher register (which met with an audience scream last week!)

Delighted to be hearing a singer who digs for the meaning of a text and who can communicate the true emotion - from life experience - without recourse to vocal acrobatics, working instead with subtleties of tone to communicate understanding.

She has 'command' of her material and I trust her instincts to pick good songs -- there are quite a few I'd like to hear her tackle!

Go, Sally, go,
You gotta let those people know,
Whatcha hear is what ya get,
But you ain't heard nothin' yet.

Sing, Sally, sing,
Send all the good things, let them ring,
You gotta let those people know,
Go, Sally, go.

Well done, Sally. She has now reached the finals.

One thing which worries me though is why her folk career and connections have hardly been mentioned on the programme or in the media.

Is it considered to be that embarrassing or just regarded as insignificant? I'd hate to think that she or others are ashamed by it.

always knew that folkie voices were far more versatile than most and far more able to interpret the stories in the songs. Good luck Sally

Sally has been well known to many of us on the folk scene for many years as a fine singer/writer (and one of the original Poozies) and unfortunately had to scale back her career drastically when she was left as a single mum.

She has just got through to the final 8 of "The Voice" and is obviously very highly rated by Tom Jones who has been her mentor.

I don't normally watch this kind of programme but she has turned in some fine performances so far and we are now a bit in the lap of the gods when the vote goes over to the public.

Best of luck, Sally. Fingers crossed!
