I am posting this because this recording is a remarkable survival and it mentions mummers (well in the title) - CJB.

===

'The Mad Modern Mummers' or 'Dr. Frankenstein meets the SS' (aka Steeleye Span).

This extraordinary 'play' is a mixture of Goon Show-style characters and Kenny Everett, and features recordings by Steeleye Span.

The snippet of "All Around My Hat" by Stanley Unwin is hilarious.

It was originally aired on 27 December 1975, soon after the Beeb (bless them) junked the master tape(s). The programme has been 'lost' ever since.

But from December 1975 this definitive 'Radio Ballad' survived on a home-taped cassette and was sent to one dj Jonathan Taylor Brittunculi anonymously. The recording was cleaned up and then uploaded to YouTube. It is possible to download it from YouTube and convert it back to audio, e.g. MP3 at like 96 kbps (variable something).

Also on VHF
The Mad, Modern Mummers in spectacular stereophonic, seasonal entertainment, (or is alliteration going out of fashion?) with Maddy Prior, Tim Hart, Robert Johnson, Rick Kemp, Peter Knight, Nigel Pegram as themselves and featuring Stanley Unwin, Rita Webb, Paul Burnett and Tim Burge in a variety of parts.

Written by David Mckellar. Devised and produced by Johnny Beerling.

Jonathan Taylor Brittunculi rebroadcast it in 2013 on Phoenix Radio Calderdale. It was then uploaded to YouTube with the permission of the BBC.

Ok, this is utter shite - sorry, I've had to give up after just 12 minutes.

Is it not too late to lose it again for another 40 years !!!???

Are the Steeleye performances throughout this badly dated, remorslessly self indulgent, tripe unique to this broadcast;
or are they just the standard version recordings from the LPs ?

Guess there's a lot of 'wacky' surrealist comedy from the 70s that our younger minds praised as brilliant back then,
that's just as much a chore to listen to now in this bleaker 21st Century.

Anyway, I'll give it another go when I can summon the strength and patience...

Yes, that was pretty brutal. What I heard of it. Seemed like tracks from the lps although by 1975 I had well gone off them so I wouldn't be sure on all counts.

The Goons didn't start every show with five minutes of hype telling you how funny they were going to be.

About what you'd expect from a comedian who'd entertain a Tory conference with jokes about kicking a disabled man's stick away.

Hiya!! Was that her doing that posh voice?? Dear friend who was Goons fan was my intro to it. Had dog called Fritz too. Miss him. Govt warning is that I'll be basically senseless as I am re anything to do w/ said band, good/bad. Dad'll have to hear this. If he hasn't already.

Maybe find a fast free wifi service and download it using YTD or something. It has some interesting interviews at the end.

I didn't know it was lost ... I taped it live off the BBC in December of 1975 ... it's a clean recording albeit in mono ... I would also agree that it's barely listenable as entertainment but for the Steeleye completist, it might be worthwhile ...
