With all of the newbies and the recent discussion on the regional meanings of "bugger", I thought it might be fun to do another one of these. To see the old threads, please go here. And, here.

Someone from that "other eden" would be better qualified to speak to this, but, as I understand it, a "bugger" is a man who commits sodomy. Winston Churchill said the only thing that kept the old sailors in line was, rum, the lash and buggery.. One of the sea songs I know goes... the captain of a lugger, was known as a filthy bugger, declared unfit to shovel shit from one ship to another. Lets face it..these were not choir boys.

Well it can't have been all that big as the Sex Pistols covered it...I don't think they were choir boys either.

Kendall, I agree with you on the meaning of the word bugger - round here (North Wales) if the want to make that sort of suggestion, "Sheep Shaggers" is the most popular one. Thinking of the Welsh farmer/ hick type bit there was a tale of one reasonably near to me doing something to thicken his yoghurt... I believe he lost a lot of trade because of ths rumour.

Looking at the sonng title remned me the Pogues did Rum, Sodomy and the Cash.

Jon
