Sorry we couldn't be there Jim, and Les and Maggie and everyone else. It's the only festival dad and I do, and we've always been made welcome despite only ever seeing you all at Beverly festival (we don't get out much!) Sessions are hard to run but appreciated so much, they've always been the best bit for me, but that's just my taste. The idiot pouring poison seems to get a kick out of insulting people and really needs to get a life - it's not big and it's not clever.

I hope that Kampervan and I will get to see you all next year. Thanks again for everyone's hard work in making the fringe so enjoyable.

Looking from the outside it is now "bums on seats" syndrome a captive audience paying to see booked guests

I think the fun has gone out of a lot of festivals and big business has taken over

The old times have gone largely but kept alive by the faithful who cater for the home made music element

Room for all really and the fringe in my view does not detract from the main festival, just different audience who make their own choices to spend their money and where they spend it

Was at the village Sat and thought that it lacked Buzz I feel it is not helped by a badly positioned beer tent,it stops anything taking off.Also felt that Beverley town had lost the feeling of a festival did not go near the sing arounds as too far out from the festival site.feels like if you go to festival that's what you do if you go to sing arounds you don't stay on campsite as they dont appear to be part of the same festival.Beverley festival always had something for everyone seems to have lost that bit

As planned, I arrived at the racecourse at around 1100hrs on Sunday and spent a couple of hours there in the folk festival village, browsing stalls and spending a bit of money. After eating lunch in the village, I then went to Hodgson's for Derek's session.

It was a bit quiet in that session, but there was some good playing going on. At the end of that it was down to the Sun and the fat guys' singaround. This was pretty steady away with a decent crowd of singers and players. Spent more time catching up with old friends than singing but I did do a bit.

It was good to see old friends such as Derek, Les, Maggie, Alan, Di etc, but I did miss seeing even older friends such as John Y, John N, Mick McGarry, Tom Hall, Roy wild etc. - maybe they were there on Saturday and I missed them.

I got the overall impression that things were pretty quiet both at the racecourse and in the pubs, but I can only speak as I found it on Sunday.

Glad it all went well. We missed the Sun sessions as that is where we usually ended up, or we adjourned to the Oddfellows for a smaller gathering. Certainly when we talked to Derek yesterday he said the Fringe sessions on Saturday were as good as ever, and the showcase went down well. We actually enjoy mixed pub sessions that are open to all, though the Sun can get very noisy especially on Saturday nights. Fully appreciate they can be difficult to manage. We ran a five hour mixed session on Saturday night at Bamfest a couple of weeks ago. Some of the musicians and singers stayed the distance but most left when the boxing came on the big screen TV with the sound off, the landlord was very accommodating and didn't ask us to stop for the match. Those of us left ended up entertaining a wedding reception that had emptied into the pub for about an hour and a half. Main thing is we would do it all again!

OlgaJ please don't be put off by comments on Mudcat. The session in the Sun yesterday hosted by McFat and Whispering Chris was a great mixture of styles, tunes, songs, tradional, contemporary. It ran smoothly, everyone was encouraged to take part and I think I can safely say everyone had a great time.

PS Jim, we played the CD on the way home, well impressed, especially by Beaches of Saint Valerie. Vocals and piano just great.

Until this year we (Alterego) have camped elsewhere at Beverley and only supported, and thoroughly enjoyed, the Fringe, as we thought Festival prices and camping were a bit on the high side. Steve was invited to play Moonbeams stage this year so we camped at the main festival and couldn't get to the Fringe as we had a prior booking on Saturday (two hour drive each way). We had considered volunteering to do something fringe-wise in future, but reading through the above didn't realise there was so much back-stabbing going on. We've got a lot of friends in Beverley and through the festival and wouldn't like to think we might get slated on mudcat for doing something voluntarily. Everyone complains that there isn't any new blood coming in to 'Folk' and comments like some of the above are not going to encourage it. Most of the sessions we have run at festivals and elsewhere have been well received and if managed properly the 'book- reading amateurs' - your words not mine - get the same chance as everyone else but not necessarily one after the other. As for paid artists doing the odd song at sessions it is to be encouraged as it lifts the standard a bit, so long as they take their turn like everyone else. The only embarrassment comes when a headlining guest appears at a session and we don't recognise them:)

Back home now - met up with some 'old friends' that I don't see very often these days. Noticed that Premier Inns are advertised as opening up a hotel in Flemingate. Enjoyed all the sessions especially the one on Saturday evening when we had to move upstairs - great for the smokers who had a balcony all to themselves!

Of course this doesn't make me at all nervous about running singarounds in Hodgsons this weekend. If you don't like the way it's being run, don't bother to tell me. No, save it all up for an anonymous Mudcat rant.
And if anyone thinks they can make a better job of it, with people coming and going all the time, changing seats, asking to be put on out of turn, demanding that their mate has a go, giving up three quarters of the way through a long song and then starting another even longer, well they're welcome to it.
For all others, friends old and new, I hope we will all enjoy the excellent singarounds we always seem to get in Hodgsons.

Why does mudcat always descend into "war"over the most trivial things.
If you don't like what goes off at singarounds, input to the organisers and ask to organise your own singaround or vote with your feet and don't go to the one being run. I have been in singarounds where cronyism takes place
I would suggest that those who give up their time to run singarounds be aware cronyisim does happen and although the reasons may be valid it is a trap waiting for you

Don't know who the bad tempered b is but hope don't meet many of that ilk in Beverley, never have before.
However looking forward to the Beverley Fringe and meeting up with some 'old' friends.
I supposes I should put my hand up as the one from Hartlepool, however I did run SARs at Beverley Fringe when I lived in Rawcliffe and was a regular floor singer in the Sun.
Roger used to share 'free beer tickets' out among the regular singers which I have to admit I always thought was the fairest method - without the regulars there would be no singarounds to run, assuming they need running at all !

Kampervan, Jim et al, At a guess I would suggest that "Beverley Regular" is someone who may, in the past, have been asked to run a sing-a-round. As such have fallen into the traps that befall many the people who do so. They recognise faces, they know they can sing and they tend to target them because you know they can do a bit. If I am correct "Beverley Regular" is quite capable of falling out with themselves never mind anyone else. They have become a troll and should be treated as such.

What is it that winds some people up about the Fringe? I've been to around 20 of the festivals at Beverley over the years, starting in the late 80's and I've enjoyed every one.

I've always had a full priced weekend ticket and I think that I've been to around 1 organised concert on each weekend. The rest of the time has been spent at the fringe.

It's not either/or. They co-exist symbiotically. Without the fringe the festival would never have got my ticket money. Without the festival, the fringe would lack a lot atmosphere. I don't distance myself from the festival, its great; but I prefer to be in a pub, singing or, when it's not my turn, listening to other people singing.

And I have to say that the fringe has had some of thebest organised singarounds that I have come across. From the Barnsley Boys, in the early days, through Les and Maggie, Mick M and others up to McFat et al latterly - they're brilliant.

This mealy mouthed criticism of the fringe and the dedicated people who keep it going is not justified. The festival has changed, it has always changed. For the better or the worse depends on your point of view. But it works and it thrives. So does the fringe and long may it be so.

Mr Fat stepped in at little (make that no)notice to run the singaround in the Sun for the People's Voice Festival in 2002 when the festival proper took a break and the chaps we thought were going to run it didn't show.He has done so pretty much ever since.

He did a great job then and continues to do so.

I would also like to say I have been going to most of the Festivals at Beverley runninbg singarounds folk clubs and MC'ing concert. I know Chris Wade very well and she is good organiser but has wanted to move the Festival away from the town for year's and has now got her way. She should beware though look at what has happened to Shepley

Oooh Matron. Well Beverley Regular I am one of those Two Fat Drunken Bastards who run the singarounds in the Sun ....praise indeed. I am called Jim McDonald (although I post under the obvious name of MC Fat). The thing is I haven't a clue who your are apart from you vitriolic character assasination of moi. In point of fact I don't believe me or Chris Mullins were drunk. We did partake of some sherbits but not incapable. As for failing to run it properly then I would dispute that also. You see in my 40 YEARS of experience I have run singarounds and sessions throughout the country and I am frEquently rebooked (so obviously those organisers must disagree with your view) pride my self of incusion and not simply putting pals on(so obviously organisers must disagree with your view on that too). Running a session in an open pub is difficult because not ALL the people are there for the music. I will end by asking what your experience of running such events are and suggest that if as suspect you couldn't run a bath then you should politely shut your gob you self opinionated prat.
