Bellowhead, yes Bellowhead for Eurovision next year.

I love Bellowhead. One of the most exciting live acts singing and playing old songs and tunes I have ever seen.

Yes I know lots of you don't like them. That's they way music is. You hear it and you either like it or you don't. It's intuitive not a rational judgement.

I think with the right song they could do better than we generally do.

But what would be 'the right song' in their case? Are 'old songs & tunes' acceptable on Eurovision? I thought the acts were expected to enter new numbers, written for the occasion. Not that I doubt the ability of the excellent Bellowhead to create one such; but before expressing support for the suggestion, I feel we should ensure they would be willing to qualify in this particular.

I am sure they could write an appropriate song that would satisfy entry requirements and lie somewhere in the general area of what they do now

As most of the usual entries are so VERY similar, they would at least stand out as sounding refreshingly different.

As noted on a previous year's Eurovision thread;
one of the Euro entries was as near a B'head clone performing a song and video
that through squinted inebreated eyes & ears could easily have been mistaken for our Bellowhead...

They didn't win though.

So yes, why not, one more vote for Bellowhead.

If they refuse to consider the idea,

what about Drenge to represent UK ????

I recall Chris Evans trying to get them to do it last year but it turned out you're only allowed to have 6 (I think) musicians on stage. Certainly it was less than 11. Would be great though, I agree.

Now for a serious nomination for next years UK entry -

Bellowhead would be an excellent choice performing their spin on a good strong catchy mainstream pop song...

In fact if I didn't know better, it'd not be too unreasonable to suspect that this years entry from Turkey
is Bellowhead orchestrating a sly elaborate spoof of the entire annual Euro song fiasco..

Really, Al? Sandy Shaw? ABBA? Can't see it had any particularly baleful effects on them.

I'm actually quite fond of Eurovision in exactly same way as I am of Las Vegas: in their different ways, the epitome of creative kitsch, both.

Bellowhead are too English. If the Scots do one we still want Welsh and Irish musicians represented as well as English. If the Scots stay, then a true supergroup of the Isles would be great.

Ah, yes: the usual Mudcat concept of democracy. It has, both internationally & nationally, viewing figures that run into almost countless millions; but you don't care for it so it must go!

If you hate it so much, then don't watch it. But why give yourself such airs of fastidious superiority, you vain conceited egocentric fellow?

Bellowhead for the Eurovision ? you fools, we don't want or need someone who could actually write and sing a winner, the idea is to lose, then you don't have to host it next year.

River Dance didn't do Irish Music or Irish Musicians any harm - wether you like that particular stuff or not

I remember a documentary (about Eurovision I think) years ago. They interviewed George Martin (the producer, Beatles, etc.) who said they should have asked Right Said Fred to write and perform a song of their choice for Eurovision. It was a brilliant suggestion, though it never happened of course.

I'm in Bellowhead sceptic camp by the way. I should like them but I can't take much of Jon Boden's singing style (in Bellowhead - I find him more bearable elsewhere).

'River Dance didn't do Irish Music or Irish Musicians any harm - wether you like that particular stuff or not '

That may be true, or not. But Riverdance started out as the intermission act (before it was turned into a big business venture). Planxty did their 'Timedance' also as an intermission act, not sure that did anything for them to be honest.

Entering the competition is a different kettle of fish. What did Eurovision for Dervish for example? Albania gave them 5 points and they finished last. I suppose it gave them a few fun nights away but did it increase their credibility or opportunities to work? I would guess it didn't.

Mmm A very interesting idea and I think that there is merit in the proposal because they are bad enough to win, Big noisy arranegments and unbearably harsh shouting (singing?) which being about massive headaches! What better credentials for Eurovision??

It would have been possible for Andy to pull Pete's skirt off at their Anti-Valentine's Day show at the South Bank a few years back (he didn't.)
