On the way out of the Robert Cray gig at Guildford last night I picked up a flyer for John Mayall's tour of UK starting in November 2014 (17th in Guildford) see his website for full details.
Nice symmetry, I thought. Cray is 10 years younger than me, Mayall 10 years older...

First time I saw John Mayall was at the Refectory Ballroom in Golders Green, North London sometime in 1985. A very smooth gentleman walked on stage, picked up a Les Paul Gibson, played one note very loud, bent the string and wiggled it - never heard anything like it before. That, was Eric Clapton!

The three most evocative LP's of my late teenage years are 5000 Spirits, The Doors and Blues from Laurel Canyon.
Will try and get to see him again.

I got to like John Mayall while listening to his solo album "The Blues Alone". First saw him at the 1968 Sunbury National Jazz and Blues Festival and then got to meet him in Marbella in 1974. He bought me a bottle of champagne for my 21st! I was absolutely skint.

A gentleman.

In the late '60s, Mayall lived in a first floor flat on the corner of Westbourne Grove and Queensway in Bayswater (we lived just over the road in Westbourne Grove Terrace). We'd often see the old blue Ford Transit parked on the corner, with Mayall lowering down his gear by a rope slung over the balcony!

First saw him live at Klooks Kleek (the Railway Tavern) in West Hampstead. Line-up:

JM (guitar, harp, vocal)
Jon Hiseman (drums)
Dick Heckstall-Smith (sax)
Henry Lowther (trumpet)
Tony Reeves (bass)
Mick Taylor (guitar)

Great sound!

Saw that line-up again at the old Marquee then the band split - Taylor destined for the Stones and the others for John Hiseman's Coliseum. If I remember rightly, Mayall's next album was "Laurel Canyon".
