Subject: Lyr Req: Land of green ginger From: GUEST,Ian Date: 24 May 14 - 02:26 PM We are trying to get hold of the lyrics to the song "Land of Green Ginger" . The song we are looking for is about Hull. We were also wondering if it has been recorded anywhere. We can remember the chorus contained the words" In the land of green ginger where oak apples fall. Can anyone help. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Land of green ginger From: GUEST,# Date: 24 May 14 - 05:35 PM Ian, the last post doesn't contain the words "where the oak apples fall" so I suspect it isn't the song you're looking for. Sorry. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Land of green ginger From: GUEST,Stim Date: 25 May 14 - 01:56 AM For what it's worth, there is a play set in Hull called The Land of Green Ginger by Alan Plater, filmed for television about 1973, which begins with 'The North Country Maid" by The Watersons. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Land of green ginger From: GUEST Date: 25 May 14 - 07:02 AM Here you go; The Land of Green Ginger Oh pity me, pray and hear what I've to say For my bosom has been set on fire By one I considered as true as the day But now she's a faithless Maria And when I recount all my troubles and woes And miseries which to you I'll now disclose You'd say in this world you would hardly suppose There was such a false maid as Maria I may be to blame but I love her the same Though my feelings she's tried hard to injure She's as false as she's fair and she's twelve pounds a year And she lives in the Land of Green Ginger I'm a journeyman baker and first went to Hull On a Saturday night in September And Maria, a cook and her elegant look I shall ever have cause to remember Each day on my round I would go with my bread Contented till love nearly turned my poor head You see how I blush and my face will go red When I mention the name of Maria I called every morning and how she would run When I knocked and shouted out, 'Baker!' And smiled too beside when I said, 'For my bride I would take her and never forsake her'. But a policeman came on the Green Ginger beat And as they're always looking for something to eat No matter if pudding that's stale, or cold meat And of course he made love to Maria At last, when I asked her to settle the day She said, with a smile of derision, She would rather marry her officer bold Who belonged to the borough division What, deceive your poor baker, who loves you so true? She only said, 'Rubbish', and answered 'Pooh, pooh' My heart it went down like a lump of stale dough As I took a last look at Maria I could weep I could cry, I shall pine, I shall die Each day I get thinner and thinner I grieve at my meals whether supper or tea And I fast at my breakfast and dinner You see at a glance how I'm wasting away Like butter exposed on a hot summer's day I nearly drop down when I hear the folks say 'There's the baker who once loved Maria' Broadside ballad – pub. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Land of green ginger From: GUEST Date: 26 May 14 - 12:39 AM The song which Paul Davenport posted above (which, if the oak apples bit is de rigueur, is not the song Ian seeks) is called "Faithless Maria" and was written by the English music hall performer Harry Clifton ca. 1866. There are a couple of threads on it elsewhere on Mudcat, in particular, this one Lyr Req/Add: Land of Green Ginger/Faithless Maria in which I posted both the lyrics and the melody (ABC and MIDI), which Michael Heaney copied out from the original sheet music stored in the Bodleian Library expressly so they could be posted on this site. Sorry I can't be of use in the present song search. Just wanted to make the attribution of the above song clear. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Land of green ginger From: GUEST,Ian Date: 26 May 14 - 06:08 AM Thanks for all your help. The chorus to the song we we looking for is definitely, "In the land of green ginger where oak apples fall, down by the Humber you can hear the seagulls call" |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Land of green ginger From: Steve Gardham Date: 26 May 14 - 01:44 PM Hi Ian, I have a vague recollection of coming across a song about Land of Green Ginger fairly recently which presents the possibility that it might be one of Chris Rowe and Ian Clarke's or if more recent then the group Beggar's Bridge have been writing local material. Last time I looked there were no trees down LOGG. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Land of green ginger From: GUEST,Ian Date: 26 May 14 - 04:56 PM I have known of the song for twenty years. We were told it was written by someone I think from Hull. We were told a that time he had died a few years before. Thanks for all the help. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Land of green ginger From: Rank Date: 26 May 14 - 04:56 PM I can remember receiving about 1970 a promotional cassette from a Hull based group "Green ginger" which I think had a song on it called The Land of Green Ginger. Can't find it though. |
