Ok. One of my band members keeps referring to Some of these Days I'll be Gone by Charlie Patton and Some of These Days as sung by Sophie Tucker (written by Shelton Brooks) as different versions of the same song. Different tune and different lyrics. So I'm wondering what you think.

The lyrics to Charlie Patton's version are posted in this thread.

It's not exactly the same, but it works all around the hook line, "Some of these days, you're gonna miss me honey" which would have been familiar from the ST song, so I'd split the difference and call a "derivative work-

Sophie Tucker first recorded the song in 1911 and many times after, so the song would be well known to people of that generation.
Tucker was born in 1887, Patton sometime between 1887 and 1891.
I think Patton fits the 'songster' mode, and would have
gathered songs from the larger community. This certainly was
the case with Leadbelly who had a wide repertoire of popular songs.

Near as I can tell Charley Patton took the hook line then wrote a different song and tune around it.

Tucker:
Some of these days
You'll miss your honey
Some of these days
You'll feel so lonely

I feel so lonely

And when you leave me

Which puts some focus on the singer staying behind and missing the honey.

Versus Patton:

Some of these days you're gonna miss your honey
Some of these days I am going away
Some of these days you're gonna miss your honey
I know you're gonna miss me, sweet dreams, I'll be going away

Some of these days you're gonna be sorry
Some of these days I am going away
Some of these days you're gonna miss your honey
I know you're gonna miss me, sweet dreams, I'll be going away

You will never know what your friend will do
Till he's gone away
You will miss him for returning
You will miss him from going away
You will miss him, oh little honey
I know you're gonna miss me, sweet dreams, I'll be going away

Which seems to say I'm leaving and you will miss me.

Without putting too fine a point on it, it sounds a lot like Charlie is singing, 'lum de ayy". I've never been solidly convinced that he had a lot of interest in what the words to his songs meant, and perhaps not even what they were. His strength was in the sound and the feeling, and there he was unsurpassed.
