I had never read anything by her until less that a year ago. Then one of my book clubs chose I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings and "Singin' and Swingin' and Gettin' Merry Like Christmas," and my other book club chose "Mom & Me & Mom" which we discussed on Wednesday. Before leaving for that book club meeting I heard the news that she had died. What an amazing woman. She achieved so much. I will read other books that she wrote.

Somehow I had thought she was one of our locals (Charlottesville) - a great voice silenced. I loved her reciting "I rise" and saw her at Obama's inauguration...

She was scheduled for an appearance in my daughter's library in Fayetteville about two months ago. There was limited seating and the tickets were claimed in less than a week. Many ticket requests went unfilled. I was glad to see that interest was so high in Arkansas. She was truly one of the greats of this century.

It was such sad news and she will be missed. Maya Angelou was held in high regard by many and her poetry is wonderful. I have some of her poems on my YouTube channel and the views and likes on them have soared overnight.

I was fortunate enough to meet her once, and to have heard her speak or do readings several times over the course of many years. What a remakable, creative, courageous and righteous voice she added to the world. One of those who actually have changed the world, I think.

Rest in Peace, Dr. Angelou. My condolences to her family and all who loved her.

We were there for this inaugural address (1993) -
    On the pulse of morning

Beautiful words from this great poet on a special day.

Sail on Ms. Angelou

All of her poems are included in www.poemhunter.com

"I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" is one I remember.
One verse:

The caged bird sings with fearful trill
Of the things unknown but longed for still
And his tune is heard on the distant hill
For the caged bird sings of freedom.

A great voice in America and around the world.

Absolutely amazing woman. If you haven't read all seven of her books of autobiography, you really should.

She was a singer in her early years, along with a street car conductor and many other jobs in between.

Maya Angelou, one of the most credible voices in recent American history, died today. May she rest in peace, and may we work to achieve the ideals she held before us.
