not really - with a great musician like Wizz - there is a sort of grace, an aura - which is rather beautiful. once you become aware of it, you want to be in his presence whenever possible.

I always find it odd when people talk about going to "see" a particular musician! Surely, the primary sense involved is, by defintion, hearing?

Well, I think Wizz is one of folk music's best kept secrets.

What a fabulous night we had in Lincoln! Wizz was in fine form, we met up with Backwoodsman, and all in all, had a wonderful night! my thanks to the organisers and I hope I can come back and play there one day.

Saw Wizz with John Renbourn in Edinburgh during this last Festival Fringe: a really warm feel-good night, and of course, some wonderful playing and songs. Wizz is on again at Edinburgh Folk Club, this coming Weds, 24th, 8pm at The Pleasance Cabaret bar - a whole evening instead if the Fringe 55minutes! Mebbe too far for Bugsy...!

I seem to have seen them both hundreds of times. it seems really odd to me someone on mudcat saying they haven't seen them since the 60's.

I'd just like to say that I'm not into who's "Best". They're both great in my opinion.

I've never seen Martin Simpson live and haven't seen Wizz since the mid 60's.

Whichever one I finally get to see will be a "time to remember" as they are two of my favourite artists.

we are lucky to have them both.

How can anyone say that Wizz is more varied?
Martin is one of the great slide players, a fantastic player of Celtic/British stuff, plays blues like no one else.
And, what about his banjo playing?
On any - and all levels, Martin is a far greater - and varied player/musician than Wizz!

On a good night, Wizz is probably the more entertaining and seems to have more variety in his set. However, Martin is arguably the better technician.

That's just my own opinion, of course, and both artists are astoundingly good.

Yes, I think it will be Wizz. Maybe one day Martin will play in Perth when he comes to Australia. We can but hope.

Wizz Jones - Martin is very good but younger and thus will be around longer.

Wizz Jones came to our local folk club in Walthamstow and was very good and comes across as a really nice bloke

Both people are friends, and great influences of mine, ( though Martin once said Pete Stanley and I influenced him) Go and see both of these guys, You cannot go wrong in either direction!!!!

I've seen Wizz Jones live twice - once in the 1970s and once a few years ago so would go for Martin Simpson.

Both good but very different.

Martin Simpson is a more technically accomplished guitarist from what I have heard.

Tough call, as Nick said, you really need to do both. Martin Simpson has developed into a really great singer (in my opinion) and his song choice is wide ranging and exciting. Then there is the guitar playing which is exceptional and a real bonus. I haven't seen Whiz live for many years but I remember a very honest and engaging performer, more conventional than Simpson, but sometimes less is more and right for the songs. If it was really down to just one I guess I just go with Whiz because he is a rarer catch and Martin tours widely.

I'd recommend Wizz Jones. Martin Simpson impresses with technical wizardry, but how often can you say "wow, that's clever" before it becomes a bit samey. Also his approach has become rather American for my taste.

Well, Martin is a far finer guitar player. Unique in many ways (that can't be said for Wizz!).
Also, Martin has turned in to a very interesting songwriter.
Which ever way you look at it, Martin is the more interesting performer.

I can't see the problem.

If you have a choice it suggests that you could go to either.

That means that potentially you can be free on the Saturday or the Sunday - otherwise there would be no dilemma.

If you are potentially free on Saturday and potentially free on Sunday I can't see where the problem is - just go to both.

According to google the Sunday trip takes 1hr 57mins to get to. Including the gig that's c7 hours out of your trip. I can't see that you have a real problem.

Personally, I prefer Wizz Jones' guitar playing to Martin Simpson's. I mean, Martin is undoubtedly a technical master, probably a "better" player in terms of ability to zoom around the instrument sounding like he's got three pairs of hands. But I find Wizz a much more listenable musician. There's something very warm and genial about a Wizz Jones gig.

What a quandry!
I'm heading off to UK from Australia for the first and probably the last time since 1994. Whilst I'm there I've got a chance to see my two music idols, Wizz Jones and Martin Simpson. Trouble is, Wizz is playing in Lincoln on Sat 27th September, and Martin is playing in Hitchin, Hertfordshire on Sunday 28th September. And I'll be in Bungay, Suffolk! What makes it worse is that I'll be staying in Stevenage in Hertfordshire (5 miles from Hitchin) up until 8 days before Martin's gig and I can't change my itinerary.

Decisions, decisions!

It's enough to give you a migrane.
