I got a call from Bob "Deckman" Nelson this morning. He was listening to a CD he got from Katlaughing that Kat titled "'LOST, THEN FOUND TREASURES.Favorite 78's from the Hudson Family Collection, Volume 1." Song number 4 piquesd Bob's well-honed curiosith. Bob says:
"I well recognize the voice of "Bill Higley" (aka Willi Waw Willy) [on the record]. He was my musical mentor and surrogate father.

I clearly recognize the voice of "Haywire Mac" (aka Harry K. McClintock) singing most of the songs. In the 30's, Bill Higley shared a mic with Haywire on live radio in San Francisco.

I'll forward Bob's query to Kat's family, but does anybody else know of a recording of the song?

-Joe-

"Haywire Mac", aka Harry K. McClintock! What a character: singer, song writer, recording artist, radio personality, Wobblie, Hobo, world traveler, you name it, he did it! My first introduction to folk music had to do with Haywire Mac. Though I never met him, he died in 1955, he influenced my early years. At 13, I was taken under the tutelage of Bill Higley, aka "Willy Waw Willy." Another character of the same vein: singer, radio, stage, etc. Willy Waw, and Haywire Mac (sounds like the beginning of a ballad) had worked together on the radio back in the days of the crystal sets in the 1920's. As friends, Willy Waw learned many of Haywire's songs. When I became Willy Waw's student, I learned many of the songs written by Haywire Mac. I wonder how many of you remember this gem:

IF I HAD MY DRUTHERS

Livin' in a cabin away up high, got no neighbors, no one nigh,
Sometimes I get to thinkin' what I'd druther do,
Got no one to talk to, so now I'm tellin' you.

If I had my druthers, I wouldn't be a king,
Druther be just what I am, than any other thing,
Who'd 'wanna sit there way up on a throne,
And never have a minute for to call your own.

Druther not try it, wouldn't last a week,
Druther catch catfish, down by the creek,
So if I had my druthers, I wouldn't live so high,
I'd never ask for champaign, with apple cider nigh,
I sure love sausages, sure like beans
'er a nice hunk a' bacon and a mess a' green.

Druther have my own place, happy where I am,
Raise my own chickens and I'd smoke my own ham,
So if I had my druthers, I wouldn't care to roam,
But I'd have a dog to wag his tail as I came home.

Never got married, guess I never shall,
But if I do, I'll get a mountain gal,
With lips like a wild rose and big eyes of blue,
A gal that shakes a skillet like my Ma used to do,

But druther not try it for they say in the joke,
That paying alimony, is hardest when your broke,

So if I had my druthers, I wouldn't work at all,
I'd go fishin' in the Springtime, and huntin' in the Fall,
And when it come to Winter, that's the best time of all,
With the firelight a'dancin' on the cabin wall.

But I'd druther work a little or it sure would prove,
That a man could get so lazy that he just won't move,
So if I had my druthers, I guess I'd druther be,
A derned 'ol hill billy, just like me.

I did find a YouTube recording of the song: This link gives full information on the recording, which was made my Harry "Haywire Mac" McClintock on April 30, 1929.

....and Johnny Mercer wrote a song titled "If I Had My Druthers," recorded by Bobby Darin.

IF I HAD MY DRUTHERS
(Johnny Mercer & Gene DePaul)

If I had my druthers, I'd druther have my druthers
Than anything else I know
While you'd druther hustle, accumulatin' muscle
I'd druther watch daisies grow

While they're growin' slow
And the summer breeze is blowin'
My heart is overflowin' and so
If I had my druthers, I'd druther have my druthers
Than anything else I know

Robert, you think you could agree
With that kind of a philosophy?
Agree? I live it

If I had my druthers, I'd druther have my druthers
Than work anywheres at all
Don't nobody call

Huh, it ain't that I hates it
Why, in fact, I even contemplates it
While watchin' raindrops fall
I sits there for hours developin' my powers
Of figurin' how flowers gets tall

If I had my druthers, I'd druther have my druthers
Than anything else at all
If I had my druthers to choose from all the others
I'd druther be like I am

I like you just the way you are
This thing called employment
Detracts from my enjoyment
And tightens my diaphragm

Oh, you poor lamb
Whilst I'm doin' nary
A thing that's necessary
I'm happy as a cherry stone clam
Some of my best friends are clams

If I had my druthers to choose from all the others
I'd druther be like I am
If we had our druthers, we'd rather have our druthers
Than anything else we know

Our forefathers wrote it and often times we quote it
Whenever we're feelin' low
Monsieur John?
As direct descendants we figure independence

Ain't only in Missouri and so if we had our druthers
We'd rather have our druthers than anything else we know
Why sho', huh
Than anything else we know

Yebo', than anything else we know
Enco', than anything else we know
Goodnight, leave a call

Actually, Johnny Mercer wrote the lyrics; Gene de Paul wrote the music. That particular song is from the Broadway musical Li'l Abner.

At first I was thinking that it might have come from the comic strip "Barney Google and Snuffy Smith." So I googled a bit and ran across this:

Druthers.

I remember a little story.

I have a big old English-Chinese dictionary back at my Father's home which contains about three hundred thousand words.

I didn't know what the word "druther" meant a few years ago, so I looked it up in that dictionary. The sentence example for that word in the dictionary is "If I had my druthers, I'd go fishing". It is clear that the dictionary editors got that line from some folk song lyrics!

I found two recordings of the "Haywire Mac" song titled "If I Had My Druthers" in Country Music Records : A Discography, 1921-1942:

  • Charlie Craver (Arkansas Charlie) - several takes recorded in 1929 with "Hobo's Spring Song" on the other side.
  • "Mac" or "Radio Mac" (Harry McClintock) - recorded on April 30, 1929

I also found a recording by Lulu Belle & Scotty (click to play) (1934)

I just sent a follow-up note to Joe about this. In listening carefully to the Haywire Mac recording, I DO BELIEVE that it is indeed Mac singing that song. The late Bill Higley sounded so very much like Mac that it's breathtaking. Of course they shared a radio Mic for years in the Bay area.

If you're asking literally what "Druther" means, it's a pheonetic spelling of "I'd rather". So, when you say "Druther go fishing", it means "I'd rather go fishing".
