Unfortunately because its a shared boat it has to be booked almost a year in advance.
I do like small festivals where you get to hear a lot of songs that are not sung in your own locals - and a chance to join in with different people playing- much more fun than the ' names' that inhabit the folk world.
Long Wittenham sounded perfect - but Eynsham looks good too. I'm looking forward to getting the boats pointy end heading south for Oxford tomorrow to see what we can find. I'll take my 8 sting fiddle in the hope that I find something.
Thanks everyone for your suggestions
FloraG.

Again, Flora ; a great shame you missed Long Wittenham ! Your doggie would have LOVED it, as one of the main dedicated charities for which the festival raises money is PAT ( Pets As Therapy ) , and thus there are always many , many dogs at the event ! ( I fell in love with a beautiful whippet !!).

have a look at cresby.com geographical search > Oxford other towns are available, Post Code, OS grid refs, predicted dates and approx distances all available.

Looks like the Half Moon & Far from the Madding Crowd are possible, ring the numbers listed but I would bet on the Half Moon being Irish and current. The other I was in contact in Feb but you know how quickly pubs change their minds.

Eynsham is not that far from the toll bridge on the Thames. Say 5 mins walk. But the session is 4th Sunday (22nd) unless they have changed.

Highwayman I list as 3rd Sun.
Rock of Gibralter is Thursday (every) - I was running late for Kirtlington so didn't check in person, but it is right on the canal in Enslow. Having talked to them I get the impression they do like their musicians, worth a punt at just playing for yourself.

Let me know if you go to something & I will update the datestamps.

Afraid I've no idea whether any of the pubs mind dogs, Flora. Might just have to phone them or take your chances. Happy boating!

Thanks JonnyS. That looks like something for everyone.
A complication is we have a young dog with us - not yet used to being left all day, but well behaved otherwise.
Do you know if any of the pubs involved don't accept dogs in thier gardens. I know some dont these days.

Should you return to the Oxford Canal at a later date, you might want to note that there's music on the 3rd Sunday of the month at the Highwayman Hotel on the Banbury Road in Kidlington, very close to the canal!

Thanks so far. This may seem a lazy way of finding info but often the web is dated - clubs have closed or moved and are still appearing.
Bubblyrat - I've called it all sorts of things much worse than either of the names here - but a shame we missed the pub do. The story of my life I think.

The Plough at Long Wittenham (admittedly closer to Abingdon than Oxford) has a regular Wednesday Night folk-club ; you just missed a 3-day weekend free folk festival at the pub,and very good it was too !( you can get there by boat , by the way ).And; Please ! -----NARROWBOAT, not "canal barge" !!!!

There's an Open Night at Oxford folk club on Friday 27th June, at The White House in Abingdon Road. Banbury folk club have Greg Cave and Nick Ellison as guests on Wednesday 2n July.

Hope that helps as a start!

Hi
We plan to have our canal barge in the Oxford area for a long weekend at the end of June 2014. Probably passing Banbury on the Tuesday before and Wednesday afterwards. Can anyone recommend any clubs/sessions/ performances that are on that are within reasonable distance of the canal? We can walk, taxi or bus to near venues.
We are not looking for bookings, just join in or listen to anything going on.
Thanking you in advance
FloraG
